Any ideas what this could be guys?

    I am thinking the following:

    Wheel bearings
    4 wheel allignment
    Dodgy tyres

What order would you guys suggest and in what order according to price?

    Thanks.

Whirring or whining? Could be rear transmission on its way out?

Try switching the rear tyres for the fronts to see if the noise moves. I've had a dodgey tyre make that noise on my s3. If the noise doesn't move it could be a bearing...

Is there a way of actually checking the bearings without changing them?

not sure when the tracking was done (any ideas how much?) dont think there are any spacers (original wheels) will check the studs later.

hmm, any ideas how much to get a rear wheel bearing done? sorry to hijack your thread, just im having exactly the same thing and im pretty sure its the bearing

to check if its totally gone, jack the rear up and give the wheel in question a proper good wiggle, if theres any noticable ammount of movement, bearings gone.

I paid ~£50 for a rear bearing to be done, only to find out afterwards that it didn't cure it because it was a dodgy tyre. As I mentioned try switching tyres before paying to have the bearing changed. I could of sworn my dodgy tyre was a bearing failure but it wasn't.

Is it a new thing or have you just bought the car that's making the noise?

That will be the CATD one that was on Ebay then?

If it was a cheap and easy fix, Ie bearing/alignment the PO would have done it. I recon its the diff at least
