focus st vs s3 anyone else raced one?!!

Look forward to the write ups V.I.P._UAE, I was thinking about an S3 but when you cost in doing the suspension, brakes and remap etc. you can't help but wonder whether it might be better going for a Focus ST or Mk5 Golf GTi.
But having had a couple of powerful FWD cars it keeps coming back to the ability to put the power down, and all other things being equal quattro beats FWD.

An S3 still makes sense but not for over 7k. I would rather have a German make than a Ford, but comparing a 2006 Focus with a 2002 S3 that has triple the mileage and it's not at all clear cut - especially if the ST drives way better.
Its an easier choice if you can find a low mileage S3 that already has sensible mods done for 6 grand or so.

paul b i agree with wat you are saying but if i were to get a st it would be an st 3 have u seen the inside of them leather heated recaro seats and all the other little gadgets i would go for it and plus the engine is a volvo lump but tuned by the rs team i think i can live with the front wheel drive its very rare i meet someone at the lights!

lights are least of your worries, hitting boost going around a corner should be your main concern.......

makes me laugh how people go on about how good a car handles over other vehicles..... the chances of any one of us on here taking one of these cars to that limit on normal roads is soooo remote its untrue.... the S3 is very easy to drive which also mkaes it a tad boring....however you can boot it anywhere you want and get the power you want.... if you like power sliding get fwd...i for one cant see me touching another 2wd car - most likely will as options are limited on the 4wd front, but i wont go willingly

Mr G, try having a look at the focusstoc forum, the ST owners are anything but chavvy on there, its quite the opposite there is zero tolerance on mentioning racing in any threads, they would just get locked.

Even dumpvalve threads go down like a pork chop in a sinagog.

There a really grown up informative and freindly forum, hence the reason I am still on there probably as much as here after not having a ST for months.

I really have to disagree that the ST screams chav, Yes, the orange ones are loud, but then the yellow S3's are not ????

I would have had the Orange one, but I would have had to wait for 2 months so I got a blue one instead, and I am certainly not a chav!!

Even though I have a S3 and love it now, the ST was IMO by far a better looking car, the S3 has better build quality.

Yes the oranage ST in this thread does look chaved a bit, but wouldn't a Yellow S3 with a fast and furious sticker along the bonnet??

Standard V's Standard in silver with all black leather, niether look chaved at all the ST would win on looks hands down....

I see my S3 as a nice classic lined car. Something which is understated, well designed, built and had at the time of production quite a fair amount of power. It was sought after and while that fact suggests otherwise it was a rare car to see on the road. Around here anyway.

It shares the same design as the A3 but as you should know being here that the S3 doesn't share many body panels with the A3. Call me a snob here i really couldn't give two "f's", I did all that Max power **** years ago....had fast fords if you can call an Escort GTI fast lol. Where's the GTI??? What a 1.8 engine with side moldings and a set of wheels.

To me Ford lost it when they stopped with the Cosworth. That was a real RS, the same as the S3, shared probably one panel with it's former partner and had a lovely engine and drivetrain. Ok it did have vents and a big spoiler but at the time of it's release it was something different something fresh and was a top performer.

Theres a difference between beefed up and tarted up, beefed up is what you'd call slightly but nicely OEM +, tarted up is all the stick ons afterwards. Who cares if it's a beefed up A3....i like my motor, like most Audi's/BMW's and exotic performance cars. What i don't like are chav brigade wagons.

Why do you see so many Fords on the road which are max powered to the maximum? Ever asked yourself that?

As for my blue fake suede interior, i like it, breaks up the black interior. I'm all for a wild side, but not one that shouts "hey look at me" i'm driving an orange car & by the way i also have a small penis!

I'm saying no more, there's not a great deal of point. Each person has their own opinions and choices in cars. I don't have to explain myself or my car for that matter to anyone let alone on a forum!

We were actually having a debate about 2 very nice cars, and you started with the Chav comments and saying it was a focus with stick on bits, and how you love the S3 as it dosen't share one panel with the A3.. I quite rightly informed you that niether does the ST, just the Bonnet is the same, and also the Volvo engine is completely different to the focus engine, has a extra cylinder for starters. The S3 shares almmost the same engine as the A3...

i had a play with a st, mines remapped, think it was safe to say mine was abit quicker ( all on private road btw) to be honest i like the look of the st's. dont know what thy're like to drive or inside though.

i dont mind the ST...it does look a nice car, although i still wouldnt touch one with a barge pole, they are built like you'd expect a Ford to be, they are far too common and depreciate like a stone....... and in my humble opinion arent 9 years ahead of the 8L S3's in terms of technology..... obviously they will have their fans like most cars, a lot of these fans will be more of the wrong sort than you would get in the newer S3....

i think this is where G is coming from....more of a 'this is how it is' and thats fact.

i must stress ive nothing against ST owners but if your of the opinion that the ST has the same target audience then your diluded, whether the ST has the same target audience as the 8L S3 however is something we cant gauge, although as mentioned before, we are seeing more chavs buying the 8L's now which is unfortunate

Perhaps its time for evryone to grow up and stop racing people on the roads too.

I think more people would have posted from there by now, but you seem far too restrained and open-minded for an internet forum. How can we have a proper forum-war without some real mindless fanboism? PS Obligatory 'S3s are nice cars too, but hot hatches are as much about personal driving habits as anything else, and I love the way my ST drives'

My claim to fame is how I was right up the tailpipes of a 997 turbo round Croft..... he might have been on his in lap, and on the phone, and with a puncture, in the wet..... but I was right with him
