Hi Guys,

I bought my Audi A3 2.0 Tdi from a local private dealer, when I got it the battery was not good, so they agreed to provide a new battery, the garage that fitted it explained that it had to be coded to the car, which they said they had done.

Following this I had some electrical issues saying general electrical failure and I couldn’t get the SIM to be recognised for Audi connect services, so I booked the car in to Audi Derby, and also to have the maps updated. When I went to collect the car I was told that they would not work on it to check for the electrical issues, as it did not have a genuine Audi battery and was not coded to the vehicle! If I wanted them to work on it I would have to buy a genuine Audi battery at £600 !

They had diagnosed the SIM card issue as a faulty telephone module, which they quoted me £1600 pounds to replace. So that was a non starter at that price.

When I asked if the map update had been done, they said it hadn’t been as it takes some time…

They also said the timing belt change had not been done and it should be done ASAP, the car has done 30k miles, it that the normal lifespan for a timing belt, the car is a 2014 model year. They want an arm and a leg to do it, so will take it to my local indy to get done.

As for the map update, not sure where to go with that, given the satnav is pretty useless, keeps wandering off track and getting lost, I was hoping the software recall they actually carried out would fix it, but sadly not.

Derby Audi is part of the Sytner Group and their labour costs are pretty out there?? I don’t know where you are in relation to Derby but there’s a couple of VAG specialists in Chesterfield that would change your cam belt. If it’s never been done on a nine year old car you should probably make it a priority….

Ok thanks, I am in Burton on Trent, will take a look.

Plenty of good independent garages in Nottingham. C&R have got a good reputation and have worked on my friends cars.
I’ve used MG Autosport in Ripley in the past, speak to Matt, he’s a good guy.

As above MG Autosport come recommended by myself as do my MOT place (VAG Indy) near Ikea in Notts Betta-Fit Auto Centre, both garage technicians really know their shizzle.

As for your maps and weird elec issue I can strongly recommend you have a chat with VAGPro based in Oadby, Leicester who @DJAlix has already mentioned above. VAGPro has completed map updates on my car along with a few select retrofits and have all the tools to complete software/firmware updates for modules.

Shocking attitude by Audi Derby, it's simply sounds like they are more concerned with their bottom line profit than customer care, simply avoid them from here on.

This thread amply demonstrates why we should not use franchised dealers unless there really is no option (i.e. warranty work and recalls).

Audi Derby (and perhaps Sytner in general?) have become penny pinching ********* since they re-opened after the Covid lockdowns. They seem absolutely desperate to claw back every last bit of revenue lost. Prices are now silly and they look for every possible value add. It's a shame as they used to be decent as main dealers go.

In their defence;

The main reason I took interest in this thread is because I bought my car from Audi Derby, the prep that went into the car prior to picking it up was fantastic, almost £3000 on a £20000 car and it’s going back soon for a few extra bits too.

The prices quoted by the OP though are simply unreal, so I suppose we use main dealers for some things but definitely not others.

I've bought a number of new cars from them in the past and they've been great, done everything I've asked in terms of no touching the paint etc etc however in the last couple of years the service dept have become a little mercenary and prior custom doesn't seem to count for much.

A1 Motor Services in Stafford are great, Tim really knows his stuff. Audi even use him for some key coding bits.
