Facelift Recall and gearbox Map

Hi Chaps,

I'm looking for a bit of advice from anyone who's had their gearbox tuned and received a notification from Audi that there is a recall for a gearbox software update.

Audi wasn't able to provide much details but from what I've gathered it's some update because something or other can fail with some bolts. As I've seen on this forum it's supposedly a thing?

Now, my worry is, if I accept their recall it will most likely replace the gearbox and probably the ECU map's that are currently on my car and I'd rather not pay again to get the car tuned but on the other hand there is also that worry what if the so said bolts fail?

Is this something to just get done or not to worry about as potentially the gearbox map could have sorted it? I did reach out to the company that tuned my car for advice as well.

That’s one of the risks that comes with getting something mapped.

A 3rd party map won’t sort it as the campaign is designed to help diagnose a failing/loose aux pump before it goes bang. It can’t be fixed through software.

Hmm so I presume bye bye TCU map, do we think the ECU map would be affected as well?
 
What's the likelyhood of Audi turning round and refusing to honour the recall work completly if they find that the engine or box have been mapped?

That is the big question, on one hand they could turn around and do the work and on the other hand they could blame it on the map and say that was the cause rather than the factory issue.

Suppose bit like Schrodinger's cat, won't know until you open the box.

Having worked in automotive powertrain and with what we know about the failure mode of the gearbox, I suspect the additional software looks for an implausible hydraulic pressure (which would be a symptom of the bolts coming loose). I'd guess that a remap wouldn't be affected by this, or affect the fault monitoring.

However, given the cost of a gearbox replacement, if I were Audi, I'd guess the accountants would direct that technical staff look for any reason to avoid paying-out. I agree with @HollywoodDroid, you don't know if they'll replace the box unless you find yourself in that situation. Is the remap worth more to you than the cost of a replacement gearbox?
 
Form what we know, extrapolate and suppose: it does max pressurisation and looks for pressure leaks, and then monitors for oil pressure drops stemming from a loose bolt on the aux oil pump as an early warning alert.

Surely a TCU map would be overwritten to allow the new OEM map to do its thing?

As a TCU map increments the flash counter compared to VAG’s central records, it would be an easy way for them to void the campaign/warranty.
 
Hi I’ve just read your thread and found it quite interesting. Around 2 months ago my 2017 TTS (unicorn stafe 1 ecu/tcu) went for its 40k service at Audi. I’ve written a thread on it here https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/flashing-traction-control-light.441204/#post-3807881

since getting car back I’ve had a problem with the ESC light flashing on moderate to hard acceleration and the car restricting power. Turn ESC off and spinning the fronts. Audi definitely did something that day but 2 months later I still haven’t found the problem. Jardine Audi have told me a 6 week wait to look at the car so I had to seek other vag specialists. 3 VCDS fault scans later with no faults showing up. Haldex pump is clean and functioning as is the quattro system on physical testing. The local indie garage has now diagnosed the problem to Audi possibly removing the TCU/ECU software through an update when they serviced it causing the problem, despite telling them not to do any software updates. They have denied doing any updates but cannot provide me of any record of this so I don’t know if I believe them.

so currently at the stage where the indie has suggested removing maps Monday and putting it back to the stock maps in the hope it solves the problem, then pay £750+ to have new maps installed. Annoyed as hell at Audi but will just be happy to get to the bottom of the problem now. I won’t make the mistake of servicing there again.

I was wondering how you had got on with yours if you took it to Audi in the end for the updates?
