I figured with uncertainty around the service history of my A4 B8.5 2.0 TDI I'd do some of the basics myself. Fuel filter included.

I haven't looked myself however it appears to be the type underneath the vehicle on the drivers side. seems I'd need vcds to prime the system after replacing or I risk damaging the high pressure pump!

Is there a workaround or am I going to have to pay someone to change a fuel filter...

The tank has a primer pump in it. I changed one the other day and VCDS wouldn't connect so I cycled the ignition at least 6 times leaving it on for 30 seconds at a time. it done the job nicely. Just make sure you don't try to start it. Just turn the ignition on.

I done mine about 10k ago no priming or anything just cycled engine few times cranked over 3 or 4 times then fired up no problems.

Very few garages would reach for the laptop to change a fuel filter
