hey guys i got some -40mm h&r springs a while back and fitted them, although i love the look its soo harsh...the front seems to bottom out...is this normal? are any other kits better?

Guessing you are using the original dampers....
-40mm is probably too short for them... you need matched dampers and springs.... -40mm is quite low so you may be better off with coil overs... there are dozens of suspension threads on here so worth having a search

ok tufty cheers, i dont want to spend loads, these cost me £50, its my dialy drive so was just after the lowered look, are s3 springs lower and do they fit?

Then no... S3 rear suspension is different being a quattro and the front springs may not be rated for the weight of the TDi lump...
S3 springs are only 10mm lower as std...
