Non-OEM ECU? It surprises me that's possible. I would have thought only proprietary ECUs would be available (to protect trade secrets).
I'd be wary of repairing the existing one if this is the second time it's had issues. An extra £100 for the non-OEM one seems a better bet if you (understandably) don't want to pay for the new OEM unit.
