Hi folks, my sister is complaining of a burning smell when she puts her foot down in her standard 1.9TDi. She says the smell doesn't last long, and with 'normal' driving, she doesn't smell aything. It's on around 90,000 miles now, so my initial thought is it's the clutch. Can anyone think of anything else which could cause the smell other than clutch?

Does this sound around about the sort of mileage that a clutch would go on these cars? If so, what sort of ballpark figure are we looking at to get it replaced? She's only had the car a few months, and I was the one who found it for her. I'll be in the doghouse if she's having to fork out big bucks already, especially given that she is on the verge of buying her first house in the next few months!

I'm guessing by the flood of responses that no one has ever had to replace a clutch on one of these?

What else could cause a burning smell on hard acceleration?

I have not had to replace my clutch (72k) but I would think the clutch is the favourite suspect.

Suggest you ring an independent VAG specialist for a price.

I guess it very much depends on how the car has been driven in the past. my 1.9 has just turned 100K (56 plate, ex company car), owned for last year by me, remapped to 140bhp at 96K miles, no problems yet with clutch (touch wood!).

In general I think the 1.9 clutches are fairly strong as long as the car is driven sensibly and not running a silly high torque output remap.

Car is standard and I presume had been a mainly motorway driven car given the high mileage in 5 years. Seems early for a clutch to go, but thought I would do some homework before worrying my sis unnecessarily.

Have you smelt said smell? It may just be normal, they don't call them diesels oil burners for nothing ;-)

i replaced my clutch on 76k its a 1.6fsi but still clutch's do go eventually so wouldnt say its not a possibility get it checked out

She lives 200 miles from me so not smelt it myself. She has only just started to notice it, but she has had the car for about 6 months.

sounds like clutch that, best thing is to get it to someone trusted
