s3 vs escort cosworth

Im avoiding aiming my arguement at any one person but ... you seem intent on aiming yours at me and my car...
Just so you know, My car runs around 300bhp now. So what figure has it fallen short of?
The focus RS IS a great car. Reviews and reports from people slightly more important in the car world have said this.
Thats a fact,
Once you have a majority of things nailed... this alone will break the bank for alot of people.

The mk1 golf GTI is an icon and a classic,
Its where the "hot hatch" thing started for the major part of the world.
BUT have you driven one?
not one thats had £15k spent on it... i mean one how it was back then?
You will ( if you judge it by todays standards) be left wondering what all the fuss was about.
Point is... they are cars built back then for the market back then.

I have driven one, i've owned one, A reg campaign spec, it was not standard i must admit, when I purchased it it had been BRM tuned and was running neuspeed ARB's and upper and lower front strut brace. It handled like a go cart, had low down pull and sounded great as there was ****** all sound proofing. It looked great and still does. on the straights I managed to keep up with a clio 172/182 up to about 90, but the amount of barry boys that it would catch out was great. I fitted the mk2 16v brake setup (larger front discs and rear discs) fitted eibach springs and new dampers and fitted a magnex exhaust and TSR 4-2-1 manifold (sounded even better after that). I would love to have one again but not as a daily. I always wanted to fit either a 1.8kr lump running on twin webbers or a G60 too. It had no driver aids, the clutch was heavy the steering heavy at slow speed (even worse when I changed the P slots to 15inc mims) but it was fun, easy to work on, and always had people take a second look. Bad points, rust, front windscreen leaked normally above the fuse and relay board. it got hot in the summer and took its time to warm up in the winter. lights were rubbish, 2nd gear syncro were notchy. Comfort wise the ride was no harsher than the S3 and the sports seats held you well although after a 4 hour drive your back would normally ache

I own a late mk1 cabby and a mk2 track golf. I've driven a completely stock mk1 gti and they are fun but only great if you actualy take into account when they were made. My mk2 golf has a 2.1 16v with twin webbers and direct port nos. It's in my garage with the mk1 at the moment.

I just noticed... those are the same mim wheels i have on my mk2 golf. Mim alpine ? mine are et13 too so fil the archs nice.

im not trying to start an argument Paul or pick on you, i am merely answering your points - you seem intent on slating the S3 and comparing it to cars which have no relevance...simple fact is you have spent a fortune on yours and only the other day posted about your car not having reached it figures yet again after the many additional thousands you have spent.....so to go back to my point, the S3 isnt that expensive..YOUR S3 has been purely due to your chosen path which was an added luxury and so irrelevant when comparing it to other cars

where did the mk1 Golf come from? who mentioned that? regardless it may be a classic to some, for me it has no meaning as i quite rightly have not driven one, nor have i had the inclination to..... the same will go for the RS, i am not denying its a brilliant car....BUT it doesnt do anything massively different to what any other hot hatch does, i cant honestly see it achieving legend status again for the reasons i have already outlined...it does NOT break any barriers or offer a break from the norm in any way shape or form, simple as

whats your point regards me not having driven a MK1 golf? that i dont have any respect for classics? i hope your not making that assumption matey cos you couldnt be further from reality :)

LOL @ 1animal1. He does love a good argument :)

I can belive this thread is still going.. The question has been ansered ages ago. RS Is a Classic, Legend and the Envy of all Teenagers in the 80`s / 90`s.
Ask anyone in there 30`s or older to name a hot hatch and they will either say "RS" "XR" or "GTI" and do you no why? BECAUSE THEY ARE CLASSIC HOT HATCHES. Pure and simple.

And now for something completely differnet......

Don't tell me that!

I've only covered about 800 miles in the last 3 years in mine, and now it's back up and running I was hoping the 2 dead engines plus all related parts, and mashed Haldrex controller were aberrations...

:faint::faint:

I mentioned the mk1 golf gti as this it where the hot hatch name started. It offered the fun of a sports car with the room to take the kids along too. By this simple marker the name hot hatch was born. So my point was that is a hot hatch but by todays standards... A Luke warm box . No car these days will ever fully rewrite the rule book. Its too well defined now. Its personal choice. But the facts are... The rs brand is a classic. And the s3 is said my many to be a hot hatch. Anything more than this or a comparison is personal choice. I will pick up on any personal rubbish you aim at me . As I'm bored of it now. As I am this thread to be honest

haha ditto....

although dont assume too much PAul ;) as i said i was only answering your posts rather than getting personal, it just so happens one of your points was pointless as your experience is different to many :)

no love lost fella :)
