Hi everyone

I am a newbie:sign imnew: to this forum and would like some help please.
I have a 2009 Audi B8 2.0 TDI S-line that has developed a whine/Dry rotation sound on acceleration.
Do any of you know what this could be? Has anyone had the same problem?
Any HELP would be appreciated.
Many Thanks
Bowdie

On a more serious note how many miles has the car done ? Is it manual or auto ?

Is it related to the speed of the engine or the road speed?

Seems to make the noise more prominently on low speed acceleration/Pulling away.
There isn't any noticeable power loss.

See if you can get a recording of it. This was a duff wheel bearing on my B8.

That's prime wheel bearing age and mileage, I had to do my first at 70k my second at 90k on my 2009 b8

Does it stay constant with speed ?

Knock it out of gear does it go away ?

Out of gear at speed rev the engine a few times see if the sound changes

All nice and easy to check in a manual

OP says it's engine noise so associated with engine speed rather than car speed. These kind of things are difficult to narrow down without hearing them and even then sitting in the actual car it's a guessing game some times.

Haha the story of my life, as soon as you tell someone you were a mechanic it's usually followed by " my cars making this strange noise what is it " :tearsofjoy:

@desertstorm I always start with simple things first

so even if he says it's related to engine speed I would always ask otherwise as iv lost count of the times iv been told by drivers something is or isn't related but when you get into it turns out To be the opposite :grinning:

Thanks boys for all of the helpful advice, I am just going to drop it in to Audi tomorrow and let them go for a drive!
I hope it is just a wheel bearing Chop/Desertstorm??? If not it will be mega:moneybag::moneybag::moneybag:

Hi
Just back from the garage! I was told it was a layshaft bearing not sure weather it's input or release?
Noise disappears when pushing clutch pedal in, Has anyone else had this problem?
Fearing the worst where :moneybag::moneybag::moneybag: are concerned?

Unusual to have gearbox issues on these. There are plenty of second hand gearboxes on Fleabay anywhere from £200 to £500 covers a lot of them.
May be cheaper than repairing the existing one.
noises like that can also be thrust bearing or DMF. I would replace the clutch whilst you have it apart.

Hey Fella's
I got my Audi back the other day after a week and a half in the garage, £1500.00 later my A4 needed the gearbox stripping, new bearings, new shafts and rebuild!!! It's good to have my car home regardless of cost:yahoo:

Would have been a lot cheaper to have sourced a second hand box and dropped that in I would have thought. They really don't go wrong that often so you have been unlucky.

The chap at the garage has said otherwise desertstorm,
He told me they have had an influx of Audi coming through the doors with various gearbox problems
Manual and automatic 2009 onwards, there was four Audi a4 and a5 in at the same time as mine.
Not sure what is going on there really?
I would rather pay out to have the problem sorted properly rather than buy a second hand box that could develop the same problem
or some related problem to be honest! Not all ebay sellers can be trusted and you won't get a 15,000 mile warrenty.
I have been bitten before on ebay buying parts for my Fiesta st.
I am happy with the decision I made, the Audi specialist I used come highly recommended to anyone else needing work done.

Hi Bowdie I have the same sort of noise like owl/whistle noise on second third and fourth when under load or climbing a hill or some sort of steep roads and it s quite frustrating because I had the car in at two Audi centres and they can t fault it although I have a feeling that the car wasn t checked properly. The sound it s more obvious when the regen of dpf is on it s a strong whine noise coming from the front of the car.Mine is manual 62k. Thanks,Adi.
