Time for a build thread....big turbo

Is it all new valves etc now Alex or refurbed ?

All new.....valves,stems,seals etc.

Tim said the last set had done well....anything uprated both he and Andy said should be overhauled and/or replaced more regularly than stock components on a stock engine,as you'd expect, and that having done 40k miles, the whole lot should go.

The good news was that the bottom end of the engine seemed fine after being stripped.

Well....

Sometimes one has to be a little single minded.

At least the car and the dog love me...LOL.

So.....looks like the head is pretty much ready for shipping to Storm and then the real fun can begin.

Tim looks to have made the ports a lot larger, and cleaned up the sources of airflow problems.....I can't supply pics of that,as a lot of what Tim does is his own developments, which he rightly doesn't want others copying.
Suffice it to say it looks good.

Me too.....Andy has to get the engine put back together and then he can start as he put it,"pushing the engine a bit more this time..."

I've not driven it since June last year.....

Haha that's a very subtle way for him to put it!

Wow that is a long time, you must be missing it a lot as I know I sure as hell would be. I remember seeing it on the couple of occasions I was there last summer, bet you can't wait to get her back with all the work done, give the custom BCS a proper run in too!

It's been a long time, and it's certainly going to be odd getting back in it after so long.

let's hope I haven't forgotten how to drive it....the older I get the faster I was...

Alex, you really need to make it out to some meets or shows this year... Been following your build and seen the car in its dismantled state, but would be great to meet the car and owner properly

Sent from a mobile device, please forgive typos :)

I'd love to...let's see how this all goes and when the next meets are.

I think the parts list alone will be something that mjr901 could be proud of.

You and me both!

DSG at least will cut boost drop between gear shifts.

Add the head work and the turbo mods to that and it should broaden the power range.

Work progressing and the parts coming together....

Thanks to Andy at Storm for the pictures, and my editing of the ports.
Agreed with Tim at Race Developments that some of the work stays under wraps.....

And it's met up with the gearbox....

Dare I ask... how come your hpfp pressure sensor is on the opposite way round? Lol

Have to ask Andy but I think it was more a matter of fitting other non standard parts around it. Lol

Got it....it was the extra fuel rail.
Pic later

Here it is.....
Old pic but shows why it's all turned around....

I came across a car last week that had the sensor in the original position but it was pointing towards the front of the car due to sitting in an adaptor. This has been supplied as part of an aftermarket intake kit that would have blocked the original position. I cannot remember the intake make!

Luckily on mine turning that sensor around clears both the fuel rail and the inlet trunking.

Just fortunate as there's so little unused space under the bonnet in most cars now.

I thought it might have been due to the extra fuel rail!

The top of that gearbox resembles something in my garage! - I'm intrigued by the oil cooler pipe configuration as I've seen the extra cooler and rad on etka but unsure how it'd work with the tfsi as the top rad hose & coolant transfer pipes are very different!

I've ended up buying silicone bends and joining pieces to get round it!

These things are multiplying.....LOL

I've left everything to Andy,as he knows what he's doing and I don't!
I'm sure he'll come up with something that does the job.....they've done a few DSG conversions now,and also the Syvecs programming for them,so I'm hoping all goes well.

Haha! they are indeed!

I'm plumbing my oil cooler in as factory for my current oil cooler (i'll post pics up when I do the swap) I'm sure storm will have sorted a way to fit it for the install so it looks a lot more factory than what mine will!

From the sounds of it, it's a pretty straight forward swap for them to do - will you miss your clutch pedal :p ?

I can see the straightforward part of it given the size and fittings are similar, but the other aspects such as time and expertise are beyond what I can manage,so I left it to the experts!

I certainly won't miss the clutch pedal if it goes as fast as it should....

I'd click like but it's being stupid (my laptop or its loading of the forum)
I don't miss the clutch pedal in mine but I do miss some of the cars I've had with a clutch pedal (although said car with dsg would be win win)

You'll have to post us a video of it in action - the other dq500 swaps/high states of tune running the dq500 seem to sound more like a slush box than a dsg from on youtube!

I'm not sure how this is going to sound or feel to be honest, but I do know a small amount of slip is programmed in on shifts...maybe that accounts for it?

Andy has assured me that he'll get it working, and then they can get on with programming the Syvecs with the new box and the modified turbo, which he told me should come in around 2000rpm sooner with all of the head and turbo work done.

A previous S3 they've modified, running a Syvecs and a GTX3576(not the 3582 we have one mine) is well into the 600s,on this sort of setup,so hopefully it should hit that sort of figure on full boost......fingers crossed.

My turbo is having an HTA compressor wheel fitted and a few other mods, but also required the existing shaft to be remachined as it was worn.....possibly damage from the head journal failure.

That's called bad tuning.... When the weathers better I'll post a video showing the difference between good and bad tuning with the DSG box.

It is indeed DeckedS3, I've seen some of the better examples on youtube too but sometimes I wonder how they can be happy enough to post a dsg slurring its **** off during gear changes, there was one I found yesterday which slurred and climbed in revs during changes - by all means post up a video.

I'd post one but I've killed my dsg box - a driveshaft came loose so I ended up milling a hole in it last year so it was going to happen eventually though it might be salvageable with a new mechatronics and oil pump etc

Anyway, from the sounds of it Alex, you're with a tuner that can run the dsg's properly rather than like an autobox!

Don't forget this car also has launch control and rolling ALS running.

I remember watching that video previously :grinning: I'm surprised the stock ecu can do so little - from memory the C30 MED9.* is supposed to be far superior to ME7 - and ME7 on the Volvos wasn't bad (5 pots) ... is the TTRS/RS3 ONLY running MED9.* ?

I think the stock ECU can do more than it's programmed to do from the factory(if you look at the custom tuners getting ALS and switchable maps etc out of it),but it's not going to do the sort of things that a race-oriented ECU can do.

The Syvecs obviously isn't aimed at economy, but I can tell you that it feels no different from the stock ECU to drive....no hesitation,no flat spots, just good power.

I can't wait to see what it's like after the mapping is pushed a bit.

Yeah there are quite big gaps on the ECU for additional maps

Surely the economy isn't that bad - I once had a rushed map put on one of my last cars - I think it was doing 8mpg down the motorway sat at a steady speed (from memory 70-80ish) I think it actually went up at WOT

For sure...I mean it still averages over 20mpg,but it's not aimed at anything other than performance.

Makes my old Cosworth look greedy...that actually averaged 8mpg if you pushed it.

So it's not bad on petrol then really!

Mine only does about 21 average although it's probably easier for you to drive off boost - so use slightly less at times!

LOL! oh, don't start with how low you can go, there was a running joke with my last car at work as it regularly did between 7 and 9mpg to work and that was trying to be good! - It was a lot better on a run as it'd still do 28ish though

Surprised me at first by how much more efficient engines like this are compared to old school things like the Cosworth and Subarus.
It was funny though....that thing always smelt of petrol from the bag tank and lift pumps, and spat some serious flames with the ALS on.

Utterly childish but so amusing....

The worst of it was it never exceeded 15mpg,and no service ever cost under a grand....

1k a few years ago is a lot!! how often did you have it serviced?

Usually every 6 months or 5000 miles.

It ate suspension rose joints, and consumed other parts like I would eat dinner.

Worst of all was when the entire suspension needed revalving......it really was fun,but showed me how expensive it is to run even a GpN car on the road, let alone racing it.
