My beloved got rear ended 2 weeks ago (no pun etc etc) and still waiting for assessment. Audi dealer says yes, write off, but she is worth so much to me (or even parts) that thinking I should buy her back for salvage and repair?

B6 3.0 Sport Quattro GMBH Kit 6 speed. ONLY 56k and of course FSH. I have pic of her when usually detailed too, absolute stunner...

Sorry to see that, :( it'll be written off for sure but depending on price I'd definitely buy it back, I've seen a lot worse put back on the road.

Ps took out boot lining, no kinks in wheel well, other than panel work it's the inner skin that the light and bumper mounts to that looks the main issue

Thanks Wu11ie, that's what I'm thinking, and with 56k on the clock she's barely run in! Such a low mileage example

The insurance company wrote my old Signum off for a drivers door, they quoted me............... Wait for it................. £2500 to repair it!!, they wrote it off, I bought it back for £300, Bought a £40 door from eBay and it was back on the road a week later lol

If there's nothing structural it's definitely worth saving, stunning colour too :)

Yep, can see this working in my favour long term too. Thanks, Mauritius Blue, v rare.

Let the insurer write it off mate but then buy it back and repair it! Doesn't look too bad...
Thought about that with my BMW. Had it for such a long time but had to let it go after all the air bags went off. The front end wasn't as bad as the **** end enjoyed mating with the central reservation on the motorway! Never believe people when they say BMW's are good in the wet as they are certainly not..
By the way the repair bill was upwards of £11K...

Thanks. Gonna do thank Mike. I sent off photos to Audi main dealer for rough quotes and they said 12k plus just by what they could see, mostly silly hours for re shape or cut/weld for section of chassis damage to get perfect. I'm not bothered about perfect if I get her back for a few quid tho! Main thing is waiting for Hoopers to come and 'value' it, can see than being a battle, no idea what they might give me, I even had 2 family friends interested in her before the crash!

How's the door gap compared to the other side

I worked in a nodyshop for last ten years.

This is most definately repairable by a decent bodyshop. All dealers will write them off due to stupid prices of new parts. I think the bumpers alone new are £500 plus. Them the supports. The the support. The rear lights the brackets. New arch liner. Etc etc etc. then all the labour to repair and paint and blend and polish etc etc. buy it back and get it done.

If not let me know and I may buy off you myself if rest of car is good. Lol.

Would rather she written off then I fix her than get her bodged by a budget shop that will do anything for the business! will let you know what I plan to do if I end up buying her back, parts value alone would exceed salvage and im sure for a few quid she can be straightened up either by me or anyone that wants to buy her and soldier on!

If you get a puller on the dent your door gap might come back

I needed to get a rear end shunt out of my old car so tried rope around the boot striker plate and a lamp post then drive slowly forward lmao
Worked though lol

Yea, already got a guy with a forklift!

Got the quote back from Audi for the repair.....£11,033. Well done boys . The pearlescent paint alone was quoted at £1,100, and no that's not to paint it!

Waiting to hear what I get payout wise and keep car etc, she's still on my drive since it was mobile estimated.

11 grand lol I bet 7 grand of that quote is labour costs

hopefully the insurance play fair and you get sorted out

If you break it, I call dibs on the passenger side front wing and the GMBH front valance and grille, the car could live on by giving life to other cars ;o)

Right, so they have agreed she's a total loss (oh really? lol) so will be cat C.

First offer from other side is 3775 and 400 off that to keep as salvage (is this a bit high seeming as she's Cat C not D? I know categories don't reflect damage, just relative to value). I laughed of course, with words such as 'do you see the GMBH kit on it?' hahahaha. Ive send over ads and Glass's valuation, all in the 4.5K-5.5K range. let see what happens.

1: im obviously going to keep her, might even pull her straight on the cheap for now, I love her and know she will give me or anyone else decades of more use, she's fully drivable actually since i've pulled the panel clear of the wheel.

so, any advice or quick repair to make 'safe' and im also new to putting a Cat C or D back on the road, any advice? can I drive her to VOSA for VIC? she still taxed and mot's until next year!

2: Once happy with the payout will go get a lil run around for the missus, and on that note members feel free to let me know if anything going with an Auto! Win for her!

will keep you posted on settlement and getting her roadworthy!

what are you after in terms of a runabout and where abouts in the country are you? loads of cheap cars about depends on what you are after and your budget

Are you a dealer then?

VAG and auto preferred (she's BA crew so doesn't like stop start traffic in London with a manual after a 15 hour shift!)

We live in Richmond but will drive anywhere to check out a car so not a problem.

Budget? 2-3.5k depending on car, Golf GT DSG top end (maybe cat d or some miles on it for that price) and anything ibiza, polo wise the other end.

Used to work in the car industry so know a fair bit but know previous ownership is key hence asking on here!

The £400 to buy it back us about normal, it's usually around the 10% mark.

They always lowball you on the first offer, they're the tightest gits out there lol, funny how it doesn't work out that way when we have to buy insurance tho!

ha ha no I used to break cars ages ago, I still hear of cars from time to time. If I hear of anything I'll pm you

Yeah, seems ok, would never be out of pocket at that rate anyway even if for parts.

Will get the figure up, the pressure is on them! Thanks for the info!

Apologies for resurrected old thread (....but that's how stories are made ;-) )

Still got the car, pushed out the crunch on the back roughly a while back when bored, see new posted pic (I need to pull it now, ya should be other way round but hey)

sat in the garage for a year at my folks place (2 hour drive from me)

put on Gumtree for 1500 quid......tons of calls and messages immediately!

NOW since I last posted, you needed a VIC check for Cat C, but thats all gone now AND two people on the phone let slip they intended to slap old bumper on with tape etc and rear light, just Trade Plate or MOT it and drive back.

maybe I do that myself and keep..

so 2 questions:

1: What is the minimum I can do to get it MOT'd?
New light housing obvs but Bumper from scrappie/any of you and taped/cable tied on bad side? (no lower valance?)
No Bumper and just tow bar pass? (with rebar sharp metal removed)

2: Anyone got any experience pulling something like this on the DIY just to make bumper fit?

Cheers for any hints and tips (re parts too)

Depends how much effort you want to go too. Probably worth offering a bumper up to see how bad it really is. I used to dabble in some things like this when I was younger but now I'm older and wi...erm just older I tend not to bother and sling some cash to the local indy garage. I'd get a quote from a local asking what it would cost to repair and MOT with bumper and light supplied. If they quote loads then you know it'll be a right pain for you to do anyway so might not be worth bothering

True. Will need MOT to get it to them first tho ;-)

I have time at weekends, and I like a project, just wanted some direction with regards to tools needed or if anyone done it before.

TBH unless you want to invest in the panel beating tools and welders (if brackets are required) then you're best off getting the dent pulled professionally, it's not exactly easy work and like any skill takes lots of practice.

If you really want to give it a go then you'll need something to weld on grab points for you to start pulling it out with. That'll be your first step as a DIY I think, but wouldn't quote me on that one

It's a beautiful car, so definitely worth saving.

I would be inclined to get that quarter panel and rear valence replaced, though, rather than just a pull. The metal's quite badly stretched, it'll require a lot of filler to get it even remotely straight.

Used parts are the way here. It's pretty easy to cut the rear quarter off a breaking B6, as well as the rear valence. As many sellers can't really be bothered to go through stripping out the luggage and passenger compartments, to prepare for cutting these panels off, you could do it yourself, and pay peanuts. £75 - £140 is an average price.

What year is the car? Is it Denim Blue Pearl, or Ocean Blue Pearl? Either way, it's a beauty!

Thanks, I may get around the weld issue using the bumper mounting points, which look like a good pulling point. not individually but I may fabricate a curved bracket matching the other side from the inside with bolts going through the bumper mount holes, this should at least get the mountings lined up to bolt a bumper on.

I may still do that, but it was getting the car TO the shops for a quote that was a problem. if its at least road legal I can pop it over to places for quotes.

Yes, to be done properly its a cut and weld. Will try and make sure im going to any body shop once its road legal with a quarter in the back.

Re the car, shes actually registered 28th Jan 2005! so possibly one of the latest build B6's out there.

colour is a two coat pearl Mica and I think is called Mauritius Blue? code is LZ5C

very special car, hence I got it ;-)

Nollywood has hit the nail on the head, cut and weld would be much better.
My advice - drift stitch a bumper on, get a light fixed in there somewhat and book an MOT, you can legally drive a car to an MOT station if it has no MOT so long as you have one booked (you can also drive it around to get it repaired but that's risky imo).

As said, drift stitch, some no more nails and book an MOT, then you'll get a quote :) although probably worth a call to a garage, tell em it needs a cut and weld and they'll have fairly standard prices I'd assume :)

Good luck with it though, great car and certainly worth saving!

Being in the body repair game for a living I see this all day long. Insurers will only pay 70% of what they think the car is worth to repair it. We did an a6 recently with similar damage and was a lot of work with new inner panels and by the time we were done the bill was circa 4k all in. Just depends on the bodyshop labour rates etc. Insurance company approved shops will swerve repairs like this.
