I picked up a 62 B8 this weekend which I thought had the illuminated vent controls (from the look of them they should be back lit)

Cant find anything in the books, but I assume these are only illuminated with an option pack (I seem to remember a lighting pack providing vanity mirror lights, foot well lights etc?)

Anyone know for sure?

I do believe its part of the lighting pack, soemone may be able to confirm this for sure, should include glovebox, vents, footwells, door handles, overhead ambient fron and back. not sure if it includes puddle lights as that might be another pack,

Not sure on the vent lights, but nothing wrong with a bit of The Prodigy

I think the same, although I have the ambient lighting or submarine lighting in the front.

@AshA4 - Just checked on my new S4 for you which has the ILP as standard
On my car the vents are not illuminated, however the thumb wheels that control the flow of air are, but just to add some confusion the door handles are illuminated. I thinks Audi have just printed the spec incorrectly for the ILP IMO

From the February 2015 brochure -
'Interior light package. Includes front and rear footwell lighting, active door reflectors, illuminated
vanity mirrors, rear reading lights, entrance lights and illuminated glove compartment, vents and
internal door handles'

How vague is that?

Yes, the orginal question was iluminated vent controls (thumb wheel) the vents themselves don't iluminate.

I'm still p****d that the interiors lighting is old tungsten and not LED when everyhting else is LED. Front and rear domes, main interior and vanity mirrors are all old style, everything else is LED, need to get these swapped out as they bug me. They could have swapped out 8 bulbs!!!!

@GeoffDunk - Agreed :(

EM Tuning (ASN site sponsor) does an A4/S4 ILP upgrade kit to full LED

PM the boss @t8ups for pricing & info

@jdp1962 has bought the kit for his new S4 I believe. He'll have further info on it too

The new S4 looks good by the way, very nice, looking forward to seeing it detailed, mines being done 25th June.
Cheers Geoff :)
Look foreword to the pics when yours has been done

Are you doing yours yourself? I have a guy coming in to do mine.

I was going to get these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A4-B...787?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4d1ad7855b but maybe I should speak to @t8ups as Ebay is alwasy a gamble and I do prefer quality products.
Definitely go to @t8ups for your LED interior lighting upgrade. He has supplied mine, ready to go in as soon as the car arrives. He's even labelled the bulbs so I know which one's which. Click here for @warren_S5's fitting guide.

Submarine lighting? WTF lol

Ha :) the two red "ambient lights" (as VAG call them) by the reading lights, that dimly illuminate the cabin.
I know it as Submarine Lighting,

Wiki Quote:
Use of red lights[edit]
The insensitivity of rods to long-wavelength light has led to the use of red lights under certain special circumstances – for example, in the control rooms of submarines, in research laboratories, aircraft, or during naked-eye astronomy.[6]

Under conditions where it is desirable to have both the photopic and scotopic systems active, red lights provide a solution. Submarines are dimly lit to preserve the night vision of the crew members working there, but the control room must be lit to allow crew members to read instrument panels. By using red lights, or wearing red goggles, the cones can receive enough light to provide photopic vision (namely the high-acuity vision required for reading). The rods are not saturated by the bright red light because they are not sensitive to long-wavelength light, so the crew members remain dark adapted.[7] Similarly, airplane cockpits use red lights so pilots can read their instruments and maps while maintaining night vision to see outside the aircraft.

So it looks like they are meant to serve a purpose for night driving

I know what they are @AshA4 and why they are designed that way, they were 1st seen on W8 passats and I retro fitted them to my B5 Passat back in 2002, I have just never seen them called "submarine lights" as VAG call them ambient lights which is what they do, it iluminates the controls and centre console at night without blinidng the driver.

Sorry, it always makes me laugh when people make up names for things. I heard an American discribe his folding mirrors the other day as "telescopic mirrors", he obviously doesn't know what telescopic really means, and no, his mirrors did not extend out on 6 foot poles lol, they just foled in.

Ha telescopic mirrors, now that's too funny :tearsofjoy:

I ain't making it up though, Submarine Lighting is what I call it as I know it from my Ford ST days, Ford call it Submarine Lighting.

But fear ye not, I will now and forever refer to it as "Ambient Lighting" :tonguewink:

Working on a drop in SMD replacement for these which can be bought in all colours :)
