Hi All,

I have a 2005 A3 2.0 TDI DSG - I had friend do a report on error codes for paranoia.

I'm surprised to find this little lot, especially as it's just been in for a service and I specifically asked them to check for any faults. I was told there were none.

Any help on any of these codes would be welcome. For information, I do have a problem with the heater not blowing out hot when aimed at face (I have climate), and I am aware of the intermittent bulb problem on the rear left. Oh, and my Symphony II decided to pack up yesterday :(

Thanks!

The communications errors occured when the battery voltage dropped to about 12.3 volts. Low voltage on the battery often causes these Comm errors. I would say that you should clear those and see if they come back.

The other errors seem reasonably straight forward. Clear all DTCs and then post what returns.

will do - I'll arrange for them to be cleared and let it run for a week before posting the results.

So, is the battery potentially unhealthy?

Many thanks!

Potentially - yes. But could have been some time ago. Did you leave the lights on or something at some point? The errors could be from that.

1st thing I want to advise & take this very very seriously given car mileage & known issues, is the overboost issue (others are minor atm) as below is exactly what I have had recenly & this culminated in a blown turbo mate, your errors are identical to mine so be warned get vagcom on it daily or more to check if this keeps returning & have you had any limp modes as yet where you lose about 80% of your power whilst driving.

Take this warning seriously or you'll possibly have a nice 2-3k bill to repair if you cant do yourself that is, get the codes cleared & check the engine codes daily for any repeat of the fault, it tends to occur if you give it some pedal on a hill etc, take heed as it could go anytime if its a turbo issue or the N75 Valve (solenoid valve block possibly on your car), it maybe the valve block which houses a number of different valves which on other cars the N75 is on its own or it maybe the turbo isnt working properly, the N75 might be stopping the wastegate from working properly thus having more boost than you should on the turbo, if it continues to overboost the actual impeller could snap as mine did & thus new turbo, hell of a **** job to do & expensive.

Clear the faults asap & then scan again after a short drive, try not to thrash it either, just give it a lite run & see if it throws any faults, try on a hill & let us know if it goes into limp mode.

Are the freeze frame figures the point at which the fault was recorded ie: at 198Nm ?

Potentially - yes. But could have been some time ago. Did you leave the lights on or something at some point? The errors could be from that.

Not sure anything ever got left on, but hey, the wife drives it mainly so could have. I'll keep monitoring as I don't want to have to buy a new battery if it is just down to an avoidable drain.

Thanks!

Thanks NHN, you are right in that I have had the car go into limp mode (can't drive above 40 and the RPM is limited), also, it has ALWAYS happened when going up hills (we cannot avoid this as we live in a hilly part of the world).

So, I'll arrange to get another check done - what do you suggest, cold start going up the same hill to see if it triggers limp mode?

Should I take this whole thread into an independant VAG garage - would that suffice in helping them diagnose, or should I be doing something different? Is there anything I can check / clean / otherwise on the car?

Thanks for the help!

OK, I've managed to get another scan done tonight - I've only pasted the 'engine' fault as this is the one to worry about right now.

The new 'fault'.

Well my 1st advice is dont drive it tbh atm as it has all the symptoms of a turbo gonna go at some point & trust me you dont want that as I'm currently fitting my new one, halfway done today.

It is probably the wastegate not working properly thus creating to much boost which cant be controlled or alleviated & I would hazard a guess if yours is a BKD engine code it could be the solenoid valve block which houses the N75 valve, this would be my 1st port of call as its only £130 where as turbo is 1-2k to remove/fit, you can also do the solenoid valve block yourself, its fitted just under the wiper lip it has 6 small tubes coming from the left side of it which has some clips to release the tubes & think torx headed bolt to remove the block, simple undo & swap, then test if the code comes back.

If this doesnt resolve & be warned dont over do it, then its possibly turbo issues namely VNT vane sticking problem, this will require a serious garage visit unless you're happy to do mechanics like I am doing given £100 an hour audi charges are a no no for me.

If in doubt then take it to a garage asap with notes as per here & dont be taken for a ride as its so easy on these matters, dont go fast even if takes hour to garage, its better than the bill to repair as if turbo blows then oil ****** all in air system, not good.

Let me know what issue is on yours as good to remember for future reference.

OK, bit of an update.

I've had the car into a specialist and took a printout of this thread.

The engineer took the the car for a drive and replicated the fault, had the car go into limp mode and suggested a replacement EGR valve & Throttle valve which I have had done - cost to me, £400'ish incl fitting.

Got the car back, left work tonight and guess what...the car went into limp mode again. I spoke to the garage and they suggested next port of call being the Air Flow Meter. Note that he has not suggested replacing the solenoid valve block even though he agreed that could be a problem before they started work on my car.

Not sure what to do now, do I replace the solenoid valve block myself and see how it goes from here? Or, get the Air Flow Meter swapped out.. either way, it could still be money spent on no cure as ultimately it could be the turbo...

Tim, dont take this the wrong way & its not meant to be nasty or mr know it all, but I did advise it would be best to do the valve block 1st given the cost is most likely the lowest out of all that it could be & diy job at that mate, pity cause looks like they took you for that ride unfortunately mate, £400 for something that doesnt even fix the issue, also the egr/intake flap could of been a diy job aswell mate with our advice, I cant see the maf being at fault cause I fitted a new one before this fault occurred & didnt happen until I did a long drive to italy.

I cant say for sure but I would do the block anyway as its now superseded to an E version & I hazard a guess I will be doing mine after taking my old turbo apart & cant see any issues with the vanes, so its leading to be the N75 solenoid block which did make some noises anyway which wernt normal, did they say it would fix the issue or did they say we can try this?

Cause if they said its this & it wasnt then they should return it & not charge you & find the real cause.

No offence taken NHN. When I discussed the problem with the garage, they sounded convincing on the approach to take and to be fair, i've had work done from them in the past that gives confidence they know what they are on about. They did also make it clear it was trial and error as there were many contributors to the problem. I'm going to get the valve you mention done anyhow. It looks easy to fit so I'll do it myself, just need to check my local audi dealer has it in.

I'll post up again when I've swapped it over.

Thanks!

What a shame to be £400 down and on the brink of paying out for a MAF sensor too :( You've been some great, cost-saving, experienced advice from NHN here tim, I'd take it and be thankful...and richer! :) Sounds as though you've been fortunate enough to identify a major issue before it's too late!

No worries, now I cant guarantee its the valve block but its one I would of tested 1st before anything else given the RT error code refers to the N75 valve, it could be the wastegate/vanes on the turbo, but thats 1k cost, hey no real loss if it doesnt resolve & also think the labour would be £130 knowing some garages, so nothing to lose, dont scald me if it doenst resolve though as I have warned it could be few things, just advising in order of cost.

You could stretch behind the back of the engine mate & test the wastegate lever works ok which usually would determine if the vanes are moving unless its broken inside which I very much doubt or it would rattle when driving, make sure you do this on a cold engine as its extremely hot as you can imagine, get a good torch & if need be remove the battery, casing & air tubes in way to see behind, should be able to reach behind though to test actuator, do whilst changing the valve block, its easy overall & just take time & remember where all went, you cant go wrong tbh given its all self-insanitory lol

Another update.

Managed to get hold of a 'VENT BLOCK' part id: 6Q0 906 625 E from Audi Sheffield this morning for £138. Fitted it all OK, noticed that the filters were a little 'black' on the one I removed. I also applied some contact cleaner to the MAF for good measure, although it looked like brand new so didn't really need anything doing to it.

Took the car out, nice and cold from leaving it overnight, floored it up the hill and straight back into limp mode. So, still at a loss, BUT, at least things are being ruled out one by one, I have to remain positive whilst my £££££'s are pouring away.

So, to summarise, I've replaced the Vent Block (N75), EGR valve & Throttle valve.

Not sure where this leaves me now - Ultimately it may end up as a turbo swap but hopefully the AA warranty I've got will cover that (it does state very clearly that it's covered, although I'm sure they will do anything to get out of it).

Solenoid Valve Block mate, not vent block, trust me.

Anyway I would check wastegate actuator now tbh & also check boost levels & I would hazard a guess turbo of & vane clean would be next, as long as you havnt bent any fins yet with overboost which has somehow bent the impeller thus fins are rubbing against the sides, should see my old internals of turbo, god what a mess the fins are, bit lucky tbh, risky driving atm tbh, its not mapped is it.

I really cant see the maf effecting this cause it doesnt control boost I dont think, it has got me thinking now though given mine was brand new & then on long drive had faults which on old maf didnt have, urmmmm food for thought, still cant see it but we'll see when I run her up again if it returns.

Appreciate all the advice!

My car is back in at the garage for some replacement bushes on Wendesday, so I'll get them to have a look at the wastegate actuator and any other 'pipeage' that could have leaks (Although I'll be annoyed if they haven't looked at this already).

I've been doing a bit more research and have found people mentioning a product called 'Innotec Turbo Cleaner' http://www.innotecworld.com/c-1064-turbo-clean-set.aspx

Seems some of the 'PD' engine turbos have good results from this, but I'm unsure as to whether the turbo on mine is similar to that on a PD and if the product would work equally well, but I guess it would.

There is a place call 'PSI Tunining' in Newcastle Under Lyme that does the Innotec service for around £100 all in. I am going to give them a call on Tuesday to discuss the issues with my car and see if it is worth trying. Failing that, I'll just try and push the AA to put a new turbo on under warranty and see where that gets me.

TBH not sure if it would clean it enough to not come back very quickly given the state of my internals, but for £100 anythings worth a go mate, but age of car I'd be more inclined to remove turbo & get it serviced/cleaned & there are number of companies that can do that for you.

Why havnt you claimed on warranty anyway?

I spoke to the AA warranties regarding the EGR & throttle valves, unsurprisingly, they aren't covered.

Wanted to to hit the Turbo last as I didn't want to give the warranty company the excuse of 'try this, try that'. At least I can honestly say (and backup with receipts) that other 'potential' causes of the problem have been replaced and the Turbo is the final likely culprit.

I'm going to push hard for a new turbo on Wednesday when I'm back at the garage, but then try the innotec cleaner route if they don't agree a replacement.

Hopefully coming to the end of this saga soon...

Ok learning new things daily, from my understanding as I couldnt see why we had 2 readings in the errors & have to confirm with RT tomorrow, but think the 1st boost figures are what your ecu is requesting & then 2nd figures are what its boosting which is why its overboosting & I suspect its turbo from this given solenoid block has been replaced, reckon vanes are sticking thus to much boost even though ecu is requesting less, stands to reason now mate, took me fair bit reading & asking questions but curently thats my feeling.

Yes, that makes sense.

I've got a new turbo being put on under warranty next Thursday. I'll post the results up, hopefully with good news!

Cheers

Thats a result then cause it isnt cheap, are they using audi or your garage to do, if your garage make sure the guy follows elsawin recommended replacement parts like cat seal, new gaskets, nuts, bolts etc, they all must be replaced as per the recommendations & new oil & filter is advisable aswell tbh if old turbo has fin damage, get him to check the old turbo fins to see if any have broken of as yet, also make sure you keep the old turbo as you could get it cleaned & resell tbh if the fins arent damaged, even sending away to be upgraded & resell might be another option then recoup some costs as hybrids sell for fair bit.

Also ask him to check the charge air system for any oil/fin bits if the turbo has been damaged already, just precautions as I've now finished mine & trust me I had to remove the intercooler to clean, which needed rad removal & fan system, remove all coolant & renew, hell of a job overall but well worth I hope (crosses fingers) lol, runs ok now so we'll see after additional custom map if it goes even better.

Thanks for the info, I'll make sure to ask about the turbo condition when it comes off.

I've got the specialist to do the work as the AA warranty will only cover a max labour
charge of £39.60 ph and it's a 3.5 hour job (according to some guidelines..) I'll double check that all the relevant bits are going to be replaced.

I'll post up the results on Thursday...fingers crossed... :)

I wouldnt ask them mate, I'd make sure you can look at the old turbo yourself & make sure you take it away with you as these garages are notorious for keeping parts worthwhile to them.

Yeah warranties hourly limits are ridiculous huh especially when audi are £100 an hour these days so you have to go with back street ones & risk unless you know them well huh.

Had the new turbo fitted yesterday, had to wait until this morning to have the car nice and cold.

Pleased to say that the fault has now gone and the car doesn't go into limp mode under the same test circumstances as before.. Fingers crossed it's all sorted!!

Thanks for all the help on this.

Tim.

Sticking vanes then mate, only thing could be tbh, glad all sorted, did you get/see old turbo?

Got the old turbo, just looks, dirty... :)

Still working fine after a week, so think it's reasonable to say sticking vanes was the issue.

Good good, glad its sorted, I intend to follow these turbo issues up with audi as it seems to be a common thing.

You could get it cleaned mate & upgraded to a hybrid & sell it on, maybe make back some dough as they wouldnt need to pourchase the turbo then upgrade it as you ahve your own, chat with turbodynamics or google for others.

Did you want Vagcom mate as replied to your PM
