I need to change my current car, VW Golf 2.0TDi Sport 5 dr bought in a moment of madness as I needed a 5 dr car due to a new grandson. My previous car was a 3dr Audi A3 2.0TDi Sport and I loved it. The difference in bph is 35 and I did test drive a 1.9 and felt it a little slow in accelateration. My problem is the cost. It is over £2000 difference in the discounted price. Anyone got a 1.9? Will I get used to it? I look forward to your comments.

I have the 2.0 TDI, have driven the 1.9 also...
The main difference I found, okay the performance in 2.0 is better, but what I found also really noticeable it is also more refined and quieter engine than the 1.9.
Having said that the 1.9 is not unacceptable performance, you'd save the 2k as well as some savings on insurance, fuel and road tax at only £35 (119g CO2).
So it's a case of going with the head or the heart...may be tough going if you've been used to the 2.0 engine but whack of money saved.

Personally I would go for the 1.9 considering the cost savings you mention. Also, watch out for the early 2.0 TDI engines as they can be problematic, particularly with respect to the head.

Some advice for a fellow sandancer....
There are lots of remaps availabe for the 1.9 Tdi engines. Gains and cost vary but expect around +40 bhp for around £400.

I don't know what a remap is. I don't want to have to do without a car for how ever long it takes to do the job. Wouldn't I have to notify the insurance company and DVLA if I modified the engine? Surely then emissions would be effected too making the tax higher?
Personally i think the 1.9 tdi engine makes more sense for a few reasons, £35 road tax, free sport upgrade at present, difference in cost of 2.0 tdi engine! insurance, mpg dont get me wrong i would have loved the 140bhp one with more power but is it worth it for the extra cost?
the 1.9 is ok but it does seem to run out of steam quickly and is an older engine!

I went for a 1.9 TDi for the sames reasons. Whilst it would have been nice to have the 2.0, I couldn't justify the xtra money.
I had a Passat170 TDi before and that was quick, don't really miss it now and have got used to it. You will have to adapt your drving slightly as the car does run out of steam.
Given that all the main roads by me are now 40 and the dual carriageways have been reduced to 60, don't see the need for speed really.

Basically a `remap` is ECU software which changes the running parameters of the Turbo Boost pressure, fuel/air ratios, timing etc, giving extra power and torque.
The software is uploaded to your cars ECU and takes around 10mins. Its done while you wait and some companies even come to you!
If you decide to declare the modification to the Insurance company (many/most dont) expect around 25% loading on your premium.
The warranty would be compromised IF the dealer was to find out about the remap in the event of a warranty claim.
You can get around this easy by installing a `switchable` remap, hence switching the car back to standard settings prior any dealer service/warranty visits.
These type of software mods, or remaps, are very very difficult to detect.
Loads of info on here, do a forum search.
People have been remapping the VAG 1.9 PD range of dervs for nearly 10 years so its a proven practice.
The main concern with remapping appears to be the longevity of clutches otherwise its amazing bang for your buck.
