Project B5 RS4 Sedan...

Ok, drive shafts today.... FAIL. Didn't have the right size hex bit so will try again tomorrow now I've got the right tools.

No worries, no great rush. Getting colder too.

Stand alone ECU, wide-band Lambda and wiring harness all ready, after being modified.
Have also lost the massive ugly auto trans / tip connectors, including the parts that go to the actual tranny itself. So, the harness looks much neater.

So, am good to go now, just need the days to start getting longer!
Will keep you guys posted with sequence pictures.

For now, will post up pictures of modified harness, ECU and wideband...

Well guys, updates have been slow in coming along.

I've been pretty busy, between setting up my business, getting the website set up, organising my "getting hitched" for next autumn, I haven't had a great deal of time for Outlaw.

But, the hard work's almost over, haven't slept properly for 3 weeks.
I can now focus on Outlaw. Anybody got front driveshafts for a 1.8T / V6 manual FWD?

Still need to buy a clutch, then all the ingredients are at hand.

Hey mate, when you gettin hitched? autumn '09 or '10?

Wish so much my budget would stretch to the V8 but the exhaust place blew my budget out of the water and it was all going so smoothly.

Keep up the good work, really want to see this running soon!! :icon_thumright:

^^^ Dang. You're not going the V8 route anymore?

Nope afraid not... I could afford £1200 max to do it but pipecraft wanted to much £££ for the front end of the system to be fabricated with a pair of 200 cell cats.

Ended up being just under £1800 for the full swap with all the bits needed, just haven't got the cash like that at the moment.

On a brighter note i did find someone to map my T28 conversion on std management so im happy and ill have a 300hp car soonish.

Hmm. I could supply you with both downpipes with integral 200 cell race CATS, ready to link to your existing system.

Just needs a Y-piece adapter to link to your I4 system.

But at least, you've found a solution.

Inner workings of built stand-alone.
Note internal MAP sensor, invaluable for forced induction.

MAF, POS deleted.

Yeh thanks for that, i may come back to you on one 200 cell cat just to make my car legal.

Think ill leave a V8 till i have a quattro and a bit more money :)

Nice ecu though just get that engine in there and get it going lol

Well, the weather's a lot better now, so it's kinda now or never.

As some may know, I recently purchased a B5 1,8 20V, as I have a client in Singapore who needs all the components to convert his FWD car from auto to manual. In Singapore, all 1,8 20V / 1,8T FWD cars are auto, one has to move up to quattro to get a 5-speed manual.

I'm commencing the stripdown of engine and transmission this weekend, the PAS rack, pump, resovoir and pipes have been sold, as has the aircon compressor.

I hope to have the lot stripped down tomorrow, and that needs a big yawning hole - to insert an S8 motor and 6-speed box.

I'll be fabricating engine mounts, and may decide not to run a snub mount (the engine mounts are going to be solid aluminium billet).

So, all things being equal, the V8 motor and six speed manual should be in by Sunday evening, I'll have to either borrow or buy a laptop, so I can do the final mapping session before start up.

Reason I don't want it to go into Outlaw straight away is, I'll need to be able to get around for the odd parts, and I'm not keen on Outlaw being laid up due to some unforseen circumstances.

I now have the RS4 aluminium uprights, upper and lower control arms and driveshafts, courtesy of Docurley (thanks buddy). I will be borrowing his B5 RS4 front brake set-up, till I purchase my B7 RS4 set-up.

Will commence picture taking tomorrow, just waiting for the wreckers to come pick up a car I broke, then the fun can commence! :eyebrows:

Any of you guys are very welcome to pop down to get your hands dirty, the beers will be on me if you do! :beerchug:

You say your fabricating mounts, aren't you using the C5-A6 mounts?

I'm also not sure on using solid alloy for the engine mounts. I wouldnt thing the fixings etc will appreciate the loadings being put thru them with a solidly mounted engine, not to mention it being horribly harsh to drive...

I've had polyurethane mounts in an older car, and found the vibrations thru the shell to be quite annoying.

Also with the car not being a quattro, is it actually going to be driveable with the 6speed box?

I've got C6 A6 mounts, but am not 100% confident they'll be compatible, especially the side with the oil filter, so I prefer to assume they won't fit, that way, I'm prepared. If they do fit, then a bonus.

I've driven V8-powered cars with solid aluminium mounts, not unduly harsh. The block is a lot heavier than an I4, and more vibra-absorbant. And the V8 is better balanced for it not to be an issue.

What car are you referring to? I won't be driving the R&D car, I just want to do the initial set-up, and do all the fabrication that needs to be done, before transferring the lot to Outlaw, who is quattro.

Ah got ya. Your just installing it in the 1.8T as a mock up to sort the mounts etc.

Yer, i did notice that the oil pump setup on the A8 motor is quite different to the A6 one, and wondered how that would affect the mounts. If the two transmission mounts and the nearside engine mount were to bolt straight on it would make it pretty easy to fabricate up the last one though.

Been looking forward to this for a while, so i await lots of pictures!!!

Lol, you'll get pictures alright.

Can't wait to get started.
Might buy an extra long extension so I can have a/c power in my garage.

Just spent the day stripping down my R&D B5.

And proving that V8 + 6-speed into B5 does go.
Bolted in 6-speed tranny with the S8 motor.

Firewall didn't need bashing or cutting, hood shuts with room to spare. I'll be fabricating engine mounts, at least the driver's side one.

I was more interested in seeing if the front clip would fit, and yes, it does.

Pictures being uploaded, waiting for phone to charge...

Semi-charged, but it'll do.

****** starving! haven't had a meal today, and have been in the garage since 07:00.

Best part was lifting the S8 motor over the subframe by hand. Need more spinach.

:D :D :D

The transmission on the stock mounts?

Driver's side is, but not an issue.

As this R&D car was a 4 cylinder, it has the D-shaped mount on the near side, but mine is compatible with the 6-speed anyway.

Lot's of room for turbochargers, as compared to an S4.

more room than an S4?

I'd have thaught the block sits in roughly the same position, bar the extra cylinder stuck on the front? The 4v heads give more room than the 5v heads on the S4 motor?

Dont the S4 turbos sit behind the engine?

Yes, more room than an S4, the 4V heads are narrower.

Yes, the S4 turbos sit bedind the engine, but still a swine to replace, the manifolds are quite close to the frame too.

Hehehe, things will be slow, as we're making wedding preparations too.

Could always mount a fan on the front of the rad?

Pity it wont me making the spring festival. I'll just have to persuade the missus to head south for some other show later in the year when it is done!

Looking at the pics, as i suspected the timing covers arent really that much further forward than the 1.8T. It looks quite tight at the rear of the motor with the throttle assy all mounted back there, but it fits, which is the main point!
