fitting fmic - any info please

whats the status, kev?
well its all done mate but im waiting to have my gearbox returned as i am having it all reconed but they keep getting the incorect parts some how, so as soon as its all back together i shall post response
 
there really isnt much to show other than the 90 degree elbow reducers that i was waiting for, plus i have only just got the car back on the road yesterday as my gearbox took much much longer than anticipated, that really pi**ed me off actually lol. i shall post up some pics of the finnished article once i have had a chance to take some piccys
 
kev loose the middle grill it will look better..:thumbsup:
really dosent look like it would effect air flow too much, not sure if i want to remove it really
 
i think that its best to keep the middle grill, cus it will keep larger objects away from the cooler.. just a tought
 
i removed lower gril on my old golf. dont think it makes any difference than showing off intercooler!

yeah im quite chuffed with the results, only thing im lacking now is some carbon fiber skirts front bumper insert and rear pannel, any one no where these could be made or purchased from???
 
Do you have som pics of the carbon front bumper inserts?

lol can you see the rain?!! i took it through my (warm) living room window ;)

2 hoses blew off when i took for a test drive so need to sort that tomorrow :(
 
why they blow off?? is there no ridge where the hose joins over the rubber/silicone hose?? if not then you need to sand the pipe a little to give it a rough face to grip the pipe better,

i like the photo above you should take them all from the living room , lol

well get some better ones up tomoz
 
nah mate its cause i had to join a few bits of solicone to make an elbow to join to the inlet hose and i just didnt ****** do it right. lazy git. the other was the join to the turbo, pop when it boosted lol
 
I never found the grilles to restrict cooling at all.

Personally, I prefer the pipework hidden behind the standard grilles and foglights but each to their own...

And if you are careful, the FMIC can be fitted without cutting the crashbar or removing the foglights.

Also, consider the jubilee clips...
I blew pipework off when jubilee clips were used, so I swapped to the Mikanor clamps and all was well.
Shouldn't be a problem with 'modest' boost...but it was up at 1.8 bar +.

What power and torque did you have at 1.8 bar?
Must of been fun.

It was always over 1.8 bar...usually around 1.98 and made 275-280 genuine BHP and 330+ (usually 332 lb-ft) on any dyno you care to mention, in any weather, no fuss, or excuses.

It was wild...to be honest, I tended to drive it around at 1.75 bar boost daily at it was more controlable with 'only' 320 lb-ft. At 332+ it would go sidewards off roundabouts when it hit full boost...fun, but not the easiest to drive as the Haldex wasn't the most predictable.

I sold it on to David R making 275 BHP ish...he then got it to make 280ish (usually just over) by fitting and playing with the infamous 'boost machine' device.


Mt IC set up was a modified Golf Mk4 Forge SMIC on the drivers side, with a FMIC in series with it...all in 'stealth black'.

I know what you mean...not cheap.

I changed mine after being left with a boost pipe blown off, in the middle of the Scottish Highlands or an Audi-Sport.net run many years ago.

Never again...and sure enough...they never blew off again.
 
yeah that seems a pain, maybe i shall get some ready for when they pop off so as to be able to replace them once i have to remove the bumper again,

what did you do to get that sort of consistent power then more than a re-mapp and fmic???
 
2 x uprated ICs with optimised flow piping, modified airbox, K&N panel filter, de-restricted charge pipe (round the back of the engine), custom Optimax re-map, Milltek 100 Cell cats + exhaust and 'H' or 'J' N75.

It was just a very aggressive map, with boost coming on like a switch...and running the K04 right out of it's efficiency curve and into heat-pump territory - hence the ICs.

Even on the dyno, inlet charge temperatures never got above mid 20s.

But it was a very peaky delivery...and flat as a fart by 6000RPM...almost diesel like!
You just short shifted instead of holding the revs, and let the torque do the work.
 
332 lb-ft peak at 4000rpm,bet that was a right laugh on the twisties.:icon_thumright:
 
Yup...2nd or 3rd gear was awesome!

I had the chassis sorted too, so it could also put the torque down, so point to point on back roads there was little that was significantly quicker.
There was little understeer either, so you could brake late into a turn, get on the power hard and as the torque came on it would go kind of half sideways and rocket out of the corners. Great fun.

On the track, you braked right up to turning in, then full throttle before the apex with an armful of opposite lock waiting...it would send power to the rear, stick it's tail out and as long as you had a half turn of lock on, you would come out at 45 degrees to the direction of travel. Nice. Good fun...

Did you have to trim the bumper much? Have you noticed much difference now it's been fitted?
 
not a load of difference, better boost but more lag unfortunatly

since fitting my intercooler every so often when i come to a stop my revs drop off a little then kinda of scrabble around to try and idel as normal again, as if theres an idel control fault could this be due to the incressed capacity in the intake system
 
You shouldnt really notice any extra lag going from a smic to a fmic.

Of course you will if the volume is significantly larger because you have to fill the volume of the pipework and FMIC with compressed air before you get it at the engine.

The K03 or K04 is also tiny...so it doesn't move much air...compounding the problem.
