S3 or Golf R or even an S1?

Probably is, I keep saying the S3 S-Tronic is a stupidly quick car.

In S mode after about 1200 miles, the S3 is .."unlocked", scary performance.

Sorry Guys, maybe its our 210kw versions against the 221kw version you have, although Audi claim the same 5.0sec 0-100km/h time, but I don't find the S3 either stupidly quick or scary - they're just too many electronic features and combined within the s-tronic to make it anything but very civilised & fast.

It is clinical and very smooth but just watching the speedo fill gives you a good idea of its pace

I do think the R400 is what the RS3 should be.
I have an interest logged with the local VW dealer, but I quite like my S3. So I'm spending the money on one of these........

The R400 ticks many boxes.

3 door
Great body kit, haunches & flares
Wheels that fill the arches
0-60 under 4s
and will cost less than the RS3 !

Has it been confirmed for production or is it still a concept? This will take a lot of business off the RS3 me thinks

This is pretty much the view in the 8P section of this forum, when discussing/comparing the RS3 as a next car.......

Veeeight are you changing your S3 for a Golf R? If not why not?

I have to admit, this first time I have heard anyone say they thought the Golf R interior was nicer than the S3 but certainly everyone has different tastes.

It just goes to show how marmite the 8V styling/interior is.

This, from our very own members on ASN, in the 8P forum:

If you're unhappy with your Audi lot then just be thankful that you didn't get an A Class (AMG or otherwise)!

Interesting to see the same amount of badge envy on Golf forums about interior and functionality comparisons, just as there is denial over handling comparisons in reverse. It looks as if interiors are actually important to people. Audis are far superior once you get more than skin deep and the pop-up screen and controls is far, far better to operate and more practical than that touch screen thing. Frankly, the Audi A3/S3 chassis and interior is just a far, far better looking car all round. It's a pity Audi can't just steal VW's Golf mechanical expertise.

That is very very subjective. I really do not get the obsession people seem to have with Audi quality interiors. Yes based on my experience it is well screwed/clipped together, but beyond that I think they have gone weird with their design. Just like Mercedes has in the lower models in the range. Now I've got to admit I really do like my Mercedes GL interior, so many cows have had to give up their hides for that, leather clad and proper quality leather everywhere. Heck even the ceiling is a nice suede, and it is properly quiet etc.

But luckily we all like different things and there is choice. I just don't get why it has to be envy when you don't like something? I rather have an horrible looking exterior opposed to interior as that is where I sit....

I think the R400 is a cool looking car.

Do not like the looks of the RS3
at all.

Okay, I am lost on this one, would some one mind translating 'marmite' for me in this context, I always thought it was just a spread , like Vegemite :)

I could also quote VW forum members discussing that they like the S3 interior more than the black gloss plastic trimmed one in the mk7 R, but to each our own.

Marmite in this context, means to describe something that you either love or hate. Comes from the Marmite slogan itself.

Usage: "A Clockwork Orange is such a marmite film"

And perhaps even more contentious than DSG v Manual, 98 v 95, S3 v Golf R, Vegemite isn't a patch on Marmite, and is a poor substitute :p

You can indeed, and you could quote member who prefer the GTI interior, who complain about the black getting fingerprints and dust (don't get what they do or how they wash their hands as I don't experience that).

It is great we all have choices, I'm glad it is black, worst would have been fake wood, but too me the current Audi design style of actually removing any marked centre console 'dashboard' area is really not something I like. It reminds me of a 1950s Studebaker and other American cars of that era. Shame for what is in my opinion otherwise a nice car especially as a saloon.

I note that the new TT is taking the same design clues, and for me personally I really hope they don't bring them across the rest of the range as that would me mean I'm definitely out.

I got a message from our local VW dealer today saying they are taking £1000 deposits for the R400 which is fully refundable if it doesn't go into production.
So looks like the dealers are confident but still hasn't been 100% confirm yet

Looks like I'll have to cancel my ***** S3 saloon and order a Golf R then ... :3sadwalk:

Why? Do you think it is **** then? Who cares what others think, as long as you are happy with it...
'Twas sarcasm buddy ;)

I noticed your usual haunt is 'down' for an upgrade. Stage 1 remap per chance ... lol

My Mrs works for Mercedes and a little rumour going around is apparently the A45 Black Edition is going to be 400 P.S too

I've just been playing with the Golf R configurator and I found an option that I've missed since my girlfriends ford Ka that I can't believe I couldn't spec with the S3 (or I may have missed it).

Climate windscreen

Wireless electrically conductive layer in glass laminate. In Winter, accelerates defrosting and prevents fogging. In Summer, reflects solar radiation to reduce interior temperature. (Only in conjunction with advanced telephone connection).

that's because ford have it patented and anyone else would have to pay for a license which would be expensive and or wont let anyone else use the technology!

Yes something like that. The owners are going through a rebranding exercise and want to focus on news, merchandise etc.

For stage 1 I'm quite happy with my DTUK FSR and Pedal Box. It is a brilliant combination albeit I've not been able to get near Craig (Audi S3) times, so in reality the Audi is quicker :)

either way it wouldn't be a deal breaker plus the heating elements in the window screen in certain conditions are irritating as they are not straight from pillar to pillar they sig zag up and down a little which means they actually are quite visible IMO and I find them distracting with my focus shifting back and forth!

I'm sure he is aware of Craig's superb times and has a balanced view on those things.

Besides we could always bore ourselves to argue that the air is cooler up in Scotland than in Santa Pod, that I had a headwind, that I just ate a foot long sausage roll and hadn't done a number 2 yet :p Or something along those lines....

They are both fantastic cars, the points being argued is just which one is slightly more brilliant than the other. And basically, mostly in my opinion for subjective reasons, I know mine are....

I've got that on my old fiesta and it can be a pest at times but is amazing in this weather.
I spoke to the guy at VW about it as I clicked it in the spec of their demo car and it's not like the ford one with thin wires it's a layer bonded into the windscreen apparently that they've used to get around the ford patent. Shames it's taken 20 years lol
