It's been that long since I removed the exhaust manifolds, I can't remember if there's a gasket between the intermediate pipes and the turbo merge housing/elbow or not?

Vagcat doesn't list one, elsawin says "not installed". Really!? I've never seen an exhaust system where a gasket or some form of sealing isn't used that close to the head. Especially pre-turbo!

The 3.0 TDi engine has them, find it very odd the 2.5 doesn't?

Can you post a picture of which are you're talking about as it's not that clear...

Yep..

253270

Surely pipes 6 and 7 need a gasket between them and 10?

EDIT: full ver http://www.vagcat.com/p/B260/253270.png

Yes, there are gaskets between collector and manifold pies... Try a different reg number from a newer car...

Bah, I know you're right because it would be madness not to have a gasket there.

However, I just spoke to TPS and they mailed me a screenshot of their ETKA - still no gasket. I queried it with them - "doesn't have gaskets there"

I've also checked other models/years on VAGCAT with the 2.5 and they all show the same thing - no gaskets.

The annoying thing is, I really can't remember if the gaskets were there or not and worse, I seem to have kept every single other old gasket apart from them. Maybe they really aren't there?

Luckily I have some exhaust gasket material, so worst case, I can make some.

Ha, TPS just told me to try "gasket sealant".

I don't think even a VHT RTV would last long that close to the heads, especially pre-turbo. Exhaust putty would be gone in seconds.

I am 110% sure there are gaskets there as i have took apart a few hundreds v6 tdi engines...

Gasket material FTW...

For anyone wondering, the hole cutter used was 44mm. Would have preferred 42mm but 44mm was all B&Q had :p

Gasket material should be available from any local motor factor. I've used BGA RPK1 and it cuts very nicely with garden sheers ;)

That pic is off a listing on ebay. There are others on there that also show no gasket. My DIY gaskets have now failed which I can only assume is because there should not be a gasket there.

There are no gaskets between the collector manifold and stainless pipes just between exhaust manifolds and flexi pipes... I must have miss understood which gaskets you meant...

I never took off the heads like you did, the collector manifold and collector pipes does not need removing from the engine when you rebuilt it...
