Hi guys

all the usual upgrades on my s3 bam, just about to go in for the stage 2 map but want to get my intake mani ordered and on. Looking at the sem or 034, q is, bam is small port, any benefits fitting a large port mani? Any benefits of a larger tb? (all 2.5" ic pipe work mind you)? Or just go small port sem with stock tb? This is on a stock k04 with no look to swap any time soon (possibly hybrid though down the line)

will be be ordering a mani (so no not worth it comments) just need advice on which

If you have a small port head there is no point in fitting a large port inlet

If i was you i would use the money on a hybrid turbo first and have the inlet as one of the very last things as you won't see much of a gain on a stage 2

inlet on k04 framed turbo is not great bang for buck imho

put your money towards supporting mods for hybrid if thats your desired route

Well if you are going to order one and not take anyone's advice go for the large port and get the head machined to match. But as been said very little gain for such an expense.

You've been given advice from experienced guys but yeah, go waste money. Maybe waste some money with Integrated Engineering. They've but the most R&D in from what I gather.

you dont need that for now

you need a
fmic
tip
exhaust mani

big port head and inlet his good for big turbos

Ok so let's day I am going bigger turbo, which manifold to upgrade, 034 or SEM who's had much time with the 034? A smaller internal volume by about 1l, SEM better for large top end gains and 034 for lower to mid gains?

Bill (I think?) done a lot of testing of the SEM and what was available at the time but the 034 and IE weren't available back then. VW Vortex might be the place to look around for research but like I say, I know IE done a lot of research on theirs. Yes it's more expensive but so is Audi vs VW.

Great info thanks man, I may go the 034 route and post the dyno results once it's done.

I tried to give you bad rep. Turns out you've been a bit silly in the past and I've already done it, makes sense.

No, because cheap and turbo are two words that don't go together.

And I won't explain why because you clearly won't listen.

The one I was eying off was around $2500, it was mentioned here that for a little over $700 they're available, competitively this seems cheap right? I mean not $100 cheap but in relation to $2500, $900-1000 would appear cheap?

Klappe u tried to give me bad rep? That's not very nice

Hybrids are crap, don't even look at them. For that money I would be saving up for a real turbo.

Stock turbos make the power they do because that's what their housings can safely manage, you start cramming more and more into the same space, putting bigger wheels in, porting to increase flow, adding bolt on accessories and water meth to artificially cool down the air before it hits the inlet etc etc...things get hot.

And when things get hot, they break.

noted, i'll probably just stick with the stock for now, the turbo upgrade will be at the point where its either newer car or bigger tb. Me n the boys here want to crack 300bhp on the stock so are looking at every little mod we need, everything is done bar an better flowing inlet mani (we are well aware the gains are minimal, but they're still there) Then full custom map. Rods perhaps? I think they're safe to 350ish right?

Sounds stupid. I did it with the K03, chased 250bhp like mad. I ended up with 245bhp and 319lbft, but was constantly terrified of breaking it.

Now I have an S3, which has a relentless, downpipe, FMIC, meth all the gear. But it only makes 290bhp and 280lbft. But if I put my foot down; anywhere, I'm never conscious of breaking it.

Put a hybrid on, run it safely at 300bhp.

If you want 350 SAFELY I would seriously be thinking about a bigger frame turbo.

yeah so very similar, also got all the good bolt ons done. If i mapped now id say 290 is where i'd be to. The inlet will get it to the 300 mark i'd say, forged rods will remove the fear of anything going pop, and later if i want the internals are nice and strong for a bigger turbo right? And didn't you just say don't even look at hybrids, now you say just get a hybrid?? which is it?!

If I was aiming for that ballpark I'd be looking at the TFSI turbo setup or getting a used BT setup. Still not cheap but the hybrids have never really appealed to me. If you're going to all that effort you might as well do it properly...

what do you define as cheap! companies selling hybrids with largest wheels they can fit into a small frame turbo and charging more for it doesn't make it a better turbo. They Best K04 hybrid around imho opinion isn't the largest or best spec'd, it's the one with the best combo parts and its cheaper than the bigger spec'd one around!

As you said.

Your hybrids are sensible, nice flow and upgraded wheels. Rather than chucking the biggest **** you can in there and quoting 370bhp willy nilly.

It's the wild power claims which confuse the market place, quoting a balls out unreliable figure and using it as a benchmark. I'm not into that.

OP, when you do any upgrades, just remember you will always have 3 options
1-cheap
2-reliable
3-performance

However you can only choose 2 options!
