so I'll get a b7 instead ay?

again... low mileage ;) in general or relative to age xD around where I'm looking to spend (£5k-6k) they seem to be around the 100k miles mark then the ones that are closer to <50-60k miles are more around the £>8-9k mark :(

ay I kinda ruled out diesels as I don't do that much mileage at all, woeful stories bout DPF and parts getting expensive on older diesels :(

To be fair, as much as all the new updates on newer models improve the handling, apart from body roll on the B7 (which I replaced with Eibach) handling as always been the best feature for me. I've never suffered from under steer with it, or found it hard to drive, so I'm not really sure what's been gained with the new systems

I think the B7 is a very capable car and I will always choose true quattro (not haldex) if I can.
I'm sure the B7 is a very capable car with good underpinnings and a good quattro system.

I'm pointing out to the OP the reason why I chose a B8 with an updated and improved quattro system over the B7

Yeah I see that mate, I'm not debating, just trying to see where the extra £5k goes. I paid £9k for mine 3 years ago which was a steal. If I was to trade it in tomorrow for a B8 with a similar spec (which is more or less everything) I'd have to hand over another £10k. Just couldn't do it. I looked at the Dynamik as it looked sweet. An extra £15k and my car lol! I was waddling when I walked away

That's fair enough. At the end of the day we're all driving great cars :)

DPF is fine if ya give them a boot on the motorway so t doesn't clog up.
I've just ordered the wife a new Octavia Vrs Diesel estate in white with full leather and 19's, apparently they regenerate themselves if you keep the tank above quarter full. Not sure how true this is like....

It's an Audi, I don't think you can go far wrong :) my dad's got a 3.0tdi Quattro. Got some serious torque

Yeah that's what I've got. 240ps and 500nm torque. It's a monster.
Heard great things about the 2.0 tfsi engine. Think the OP will be very happy with that

Yeah the 2.0t fsi is a good engine, just aslong as the main issues have been covered like the chain and tensioner, cambelt, cam follower and regular servicing. Can't go far wrong. Tunes up a treat aswel :)

cool :) yeah they are all sexy audis at the end of the day ;) tried calling the garage but line was busy (better not be someone buying the audi!!!! ) so I'll try again shortly.

wait....

chain and tensioner, cambelt.......thought they were the same thing, just chain on the b8s and belt on the b7s? no idea what a cam follower is or does (follows the cam? :p )

so for servicing ideally want every year/10k miles and then in preferential order of audi dealership, audi specialist, local yahoo, none. thinking with these cars closer to the 100k mark might be able to negotiate the price down with the cam belt being done again in like 10-20k miles?

mannnnn....just can't wait to finally get one some times soon :D

edit: just called up and the car is still there ;) so going along tomorrow around 2pm to view it :D did ask if I wanted to reserve it but left it as didn't fancy the back and forth of £300 :p so hopefully no one nabs it between now and then ;) guy sounded friendly though....suppose they all do when someone says they might be buying their car xD

B7's petrols have cambelts.....B8 petrols have chain driven cams, very early B8 petrols are a bit thirsty......Note: You could argue that Audi's chain driven engine rep' isn't brilliant....

The 2.0t fsi has a belt and a chain. Belt on the front and a chain on the rear. It's the rear chain that can be a problem. It's not a serviceable part as far as Audi are concerned, but it's a must in the real world. Unfortunately. Not the cheapest of jobs either

...audi dealership, audi specialist, local yahoo, none.

I actually trust my local audi specialist more than the dealer. :) But then that's not unique to Audi. I've found with the local SEAT, VW and Audi dealers I have to tell them what needs doing on the service...

"isn't it due an air filter and brake service this year?"
"oh yeah, you're right"
"(thinks) WTF am I paying you for?"

thanks again for replies :D and yea, I am looking to hopefully get a car with the 60/40 split seats that fold ;)

I'm a bit confused again from the cam belt/chain talk.... so on the B7 there's a belt for the cams and then also a chain on the back? is that right? and the B8 is all chain?

on another note I went to see that car on sat. was pretty tidy to be fair! couldn't see any bumps/scrapes on the body, interior was very clean too! a few small quibbles I had with it though:

-main and fog likes had condensation on the inside
-one of the bose speaker grills had taken a small knock so had a small crack (probably un-noticeable if pulled back in line)
-ashtray silver fascia was loose ( looked like easy fix but didn't want to mess as I don't own it ;) )
-symphony radio (with cassette deck) didn't play mps cd's...but a retrofit radio/nav was on the cards anyway.
-fixed rear seats and not the folding split ones :( pretty big boot still but dunno if I'd regret not having them.
-a license plate bulb was out  would get leds anyway ;)

slightly more concerning was when I checked the coolant the liquid was orangey and left a orange residue around the inside of the expansion tank :\ looks a bit like rusty/copper tainted water..... but I did take a pic and my mate said it's normal and just does that :p

brake discs looked a little worn, think the fronts more more so, was a lip around the edge of the disc maybe 2 mm?

under the drivers side door on the underside of the car it looked like where you would put the car jack was bent :\ not sure if it may have actually just been the plastic (or whatever) under car panels that stop dirt/stuff flicking up onto the metal.

the car seemed to run flawlessly to be fair, started up didn't notice any shaking or lumping of the engine (was from cold...I was touching the engine before hand ;) ), gear changes were smooth to me through each gear up and down, pulling well in low revs and stuck to the road :D though I didn't get the engine up to temp or chance to really give it a bit of a high rev throttle as there was a bit of traffic about and we didn't go all that far and went round in a relatively small lap of the local area. only got up to about 5krpm when pulling away from lights before another roundabout :p but did feel good in the gears.

also forgot to test the all round parking sensors...I also believe the car is fitted with a tracker after looking though some of the manuals in the glove box.

the car did have a parrot system or something installed too, little controller on the dash by the steering wheel and there was also an ipod connector in the glovebox. now I asked the guy and he didn't know much about it and said it was aftermarket and would have been added after. I'm not sure it it's just for music or for bluetooth to phones too (as the guy seemed to suggest too). if it's BT for phones I'd keep it... if not.... it'll be gone as I don't use ipods :p

so things I've learned:
-take a mechanic/someone really savvy with the type of car you're going to see xD
-push for longer test drives or alone ;)

so sounds good? I can try and get some picks up later of some of the questionably things. need to find a mech friend to come along with me for maybe another test drive, or just get an RAC/AA check for £250? (i think price for AWD). HPI was clear as the guy did it for me in the office as we were talking about it. also car has a lot of paper work and seems it's had quite a bit of work the past few years replacing things here and there. cambelt was done at like 55k so going to need doing again in the next 10-15k (95k current). this and brakes and lights points to argue value down? :D

I have an Audi A4 DTM I am in the process of advertising in the coming weeks. Just a quick run down but I will give you the full details:

-Sprint Blue (Key reason I bought it)
-Running at 320bhp
-Bose with Bose Subwoofer
-Satnav/RNS-E
-Winter Pack (Heated Seats, Heater washer jets etc)
-Storage Pack
-Lighting Pack
-Auto Lights
-Auto Wipers
-Audi S4 Wing Mirrors
-Audi A4 B8 MFSW
-Audi TTS Gearknob

ahhh nice manny! sounds like a lovely motor, 320BHP? ;) typo guessing as not mentioned any tuning in the spec.

and what's a MFSW? :p

right so been looking off and on and nothing that really tickled my fancy has made itself known..... except for one (which is causing me trouble now ;) )

so I've been kinda getting hooked on the idea of jumping in a little bit deeper and going for an 4.2 v8 S4 instead ;) many youtbe vids later and I am thoroughly in love with rumbling v8! (think it would be had for anyone not to be!!!) and I saw a cracker for just shy of £9k on autotrader but literally the few hours after first spotting, phoned up.... was gone :( booo!!!!

so now i've basically clouded my mind even more regarding what I would like xD

the s4 make the search a little easier as most have navigation and bose. Also think that they are all split/folding rear seats ;) (woohoo!!!) the V8 just sounds like a beast!!! so spoken to a few people and I'm getting mixed opinions about it really. some saying to go for the s4 over the A4 as it's more fun/drivers car/ bigger grin etc etc... and others are counter arguing it's too much to run/tax/insure/upkeep and I should stick to looking for the 2.0t.

personally I would love the S4 but want to try and think about it a bit more realistically :p I've done a little research and well it's not much more to insure, tax can be £280 on pre-may 2006 models. Given that it's NA there is potentially less that is likely to go wrong on it and seems to be a pretty solid engine with regular service and only problem I've seen popping up is "chain rattle" which is usually the plastic chain guides that have cracked or broken off completely.

I suppose the biggest thing I'm a bit worried about is how much it's actually going to cost to drive about, i.e. fueling up, mpg. Now on average I do about 7-9k miles a year so hardly anything really, this is also done in a 1.5 crdi kia rio (56). the majority of my trips are city/town driving with work being about 8 miles round trip daily. Then on weekend I usually go to see the parents with is A/B/country lanes and good fun ;) then I make a random trip every few months across the country so mostly A roads and motorway. I do also plan on taking my new car on more roadtrips to go see castles across the uk, visiting ireland and driving to/on the nurburgring via netherlands to see a friend.

so basically. given the choice what would you have? is there anything else I should be wary of regarding the S4 4.2? how much more financially crippling is it to drive than the a4? also some peoples mpgs/fuel costs.

I know the usual response is "if you have to ask how much then you can't afford" :p but would like some more opinions/info so some things. Don't want to be put off by people just saying "ooo the mpg difference" as I don't do much mileage and barely have to fill up one tank a month currently then doubling that monthly fuel is easily doable :p and the thinking what are some realistic figures when out on a long run.

any info/ would be greatly appreciated :D

(also thought about the s4 b8 (3.0T) but then it's weighing up the extra initial cost, goodies, slightly better mpg, s/c v6 so more tunable but losing that beautiful v8 sound)

Buy a B7, if you want to mod it and service it yourself. B8 costs much more to buy, mod and you may devalue it by servicing it yourself. A B7 has pretty much devalued already!! My 2.0T FSI Quattro is ace, I love driving it. It's like a modern day impreza once tuned. I chose an early one to save money, but made sure it was a nice colour, had FSH, xenons and split folding rear seats (like you I need to carry long stuff often being a property landlord doing renovations and repairs). There doesn't appear to be much difference between the early or late engines internally or externally. The turbos were revised too on the 220ps models. My 200ps model has just done 80,000 miles, I've had a fair amount of issues to sort, but it's a keeper for sure. I prefer the DTM model for the bumpers and spoilers, but as they were only in blue, silver, black & yellow, I wanted red, so shall just keep mine for now. I may put the DTM bodykit on mine in time! I think if you bought an S4, your fuel bill would be much higher. The 2.0T is quite economical in comparsion. In fact, I'll say if you're even discussing fuel economy, don't buy larger than a 2.0litre! I bought my car to drive and completely ignore the MPG readings and fuel bills!

Thanks for the response Al :)

some good points in there. yeah the reason I've mostly been looking at the b7's is that I can start to attempt some work on it myself.... starting off small ofcourse and working my way up to maybe full maintenance where as with the b8 it's more likely to depreciate the value even further than it will normally (% wise more than a b7 from my time of purchase).

I know what ya mean about the DTM kit, does just make it look that little bit more aggressive right? ;)

with regards to the S4, this is why I'm asking.... as I'd not want to buy it and then be heart broken if I had to sell it due to an empty bank account and the fuel station making out like bandits :p I perfectly understand that it's a big engine and so will eat through a lot more fuel but trying to get a better idea of whether with my intentions if it's just some scary low numbers on paper that actually won't effect me so much because of my low mileage :p trying to make a more informed decision.

I tell you what though, since I started looking at S4's, the pickings have gotten really slim again..... I'm just cursed I swear!!! I had my eye on 3-4 and they all went then moment I started to seriously consider them :p

I had two B6 S4's (same engine as the B7) before my B7 RS4, around town (I do a 5 mile each way commute) the S4's gave me around 18-20mpg, on longer runs I never saw more than 24mpg. To put that into perspective, before the S4's I had a chipped (to 275bhp) 8P S3 that did around 22mpg - so the S4's were not a lot different.

hummmm........ now I just dunno what to think haha! though have seen some nice DTMs come up onto autotrader. maybe it might be best to go for the 2.0 for now.... see how that runs over the summer around town and on the longer hauls and if I don't even raise an eyebrow about fuel then can look at swapping it out for an S4 ;) also get a bit more audi knowledge and experience under my belt and will appreciate the step ups more (100hp->200->330 rather than just 100->330hp) and be less likely to wrap it around a tree :p I gotta just buy something and get it done and dusted!!!

Hi mate I almost bought the dtm that's on the auto trader , the owner is a total **** and is quite vague about work carried out. He has owned it for 6months and wants to get rid- he paid £8k and will let it go for £6k after 6 months of ownership????? I would advise against that one or make sure you go through it and all receipts with a fine tooth comb!!!

ahhh thanks for the warning!!! is that the silver 05/55 plate with pics from a multistory carpark? (I think one that I saw? )

yeah I think I've seen that silver one up for some time now and sure it was up for more like £8k a while back....looks like bought and then wants a quite sale if issues.

the ones I was looking at thought are two black DTMs around the £8-9k mark I think :)

true true :) well I'm kinda looking at the black ones they have up there. see 3 nice looking ones but finding it hard to see what real differences there are between the models. they all seem pretty similar specced with the exception of the most expensive having a sun roof and nav :p and then it's just mileage..... thoughts? :p

(edit: thought was 4, but the cheapest with nav was actually a non-dtm... i just failed to read the title lol)

To be honest I've been looking for a good 6weeks and what I've realised is that if you wait for the "right car" you will never buy one.

haha story of my life ;) yeah, just have to bite the bullet and maybe compromise on something I'm not too bothered on :)

ok so, as always, been keeping an eye on the market..... spotted a lovely little one, more towards the upper side of my budget but it, from what I can see, ticks pretty much every box :D woopwoop! going to phone up tonight to find out some more info on it.

Audi a4 quattro, 220bhp, 2005, around 60k miles (so will be asking when cam belt/pump were last done and try to negotiate price), see about the service history, find out where they actually are (silly autotrader being so vague...210 miles.... BUT WHERE?! :p ), has the split seats, bose, nav.... kinda wanted a sun roof but hey... one less thing to leak right? ;) gotta ask if it's had any mods though as would like to start from a stock platform (seen one mod I think so gotta check and also see how it effects insurance). full leathers, did want the half leather half alcantara (spelling?) but people have said the leathers aren't an issue really in the heat.... plus treat them and then easy wipe clean :D hoorah!

my guess is it's up near Manchester somewhere. if things go well on the phone I'll probably try and get a rac/aa check done, negotiate a bit on the price (currently over £8k so would like to get in the £7k bracket :) ) and never know.....could be picking it up on the weekend! ahhh!!! xD

time to read back over all the pages for all the tips as being crazy with work recently so it's pushed most of that info out haha!

also bought "car mechanic simulator 2014" on steam over the weekend and been rinsing that.... so you know.... I'm like a total pro mechanic now xD fixing broken read diffs in under 5 mins.... get in ;) hahaha! where as my father just laughs at the prospect of doing any work under the bonnet on a german car :( but I'll show him!!! :p start off simple like a gas bonnet strut for sexy opening ;)

that moment of excitement when you phone up to enquire... it rings.... your heart beats faster.... then goes to answer phone :( damn! hopefully get back to me soon xD

guy phoned me back and we had a chat about it. everything sounds great about the car, a few advisories from the last MOT but all except one have been seen too, rear brake hoses are showing some wear so been noted to keep an eye on. something to negotiate the price? :) how much you think this will cost? just get the audi parts or would just getting braided hoses all round be a worthy investment for a little more cost?

car is @60k and had cambelt/pump @37k at the last (or last but one service) and is good till 80k :) so there's about 2 years ;)

he did say someone else was already very interested but hadn't heard off the guy when he was going to be organising things. hopefully he won't follow it up ;)

I did want to get an AA/RAC xyz point vehicle inspection done but the guy mentioned the other interested party was looking to get that done by audi, is that just the audi health check? and is it free as I think it says..... what's the catch.... there's gotta be a catch!!! :p ????

comes with a rather nice private plate but might look into selling that as I've got a different plate in mind for it.

I did ask about oil consumption and he's had it for just over a year (a year last feb) and he's had to top it up once in that time when the light came on. sounds reasonable enough I think :)

it's up in york so quite the trek for myself (and my father who will be nominated to drive me ;) ) come this saturday should things go well. :) hopefully rolling back in a father-son audi convoy :D chooo choooo!!!!! :racer:

balls........ the guy did get back in touch with him. passed the audi check (yay!) but he's waiting to hear back to arrange to sell to the guy on sat :( awww.... SO CLOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :sob:

but he's got my number so he's told me if it goes tits up then he'll get in touch :)

back to autotrader for now! :p ...here we go again......again.....

Hehe thanks :D unfortunately it didn't work out :(sales rep told me they chevked for me and that the rear seats folded..... within 10 mons of arriving in london we disvovered this was not the case :( boo!!!

Wasted journey but still a nice day out, hood down in my fathers a3 on the way back through the country roads and valleys :D face still sun burnt ha!!

But that car that was going on sat.... Didn't go :D guy got back in touch with me tpday saying they guy couldn't organise to come up and get it due to both of their work limitations. So going to check alllll the info again tonight and hopefully agree a deal and make the drive on sat (or friday night as it's in york).

Wouldn't mind paying a bit less though, better to try and negotiate a price before I go up? Just thinking if I leave it till I'm there then the ball is in his court as it's a long way to go for nothing :p

(Just had a call off the seat dealship I visited on sat.... seems like they are reluctant to give me my deposit back. Guy ways saying the rep said I was happy to buy but forgot my credit card ao they were holding it for me?!?!?! And now I said well no I want my money and he's saying he's going to ask the guy....wtf....why? I don't want it. He doesn't have my money, the company does. Anyone can do a refund...awkward *******s)

update: spoke to someone else as didn't hear anything back and he was a lot more understanding and reasonable. he also opened with "ahhhh the guy from wales who forgot his credit card" :p to which I told him the story and he said that sounds a lot more likely haha also said how can people get confused if it has folding seats or not if you just go look? :p but he's apparently going to tallk to the manager and get it sorted. I did ask for him to get the manager to call me back today (this was about 4.30 i called) but not heard anything yet.... tempted to call up again or I;ll just leave it to tomorrow and then the kid will be there too.... suspect he might get a bit of a grilling.
