Hi All,

I have an A4 Avant AVF 1.9TDI Quattro Avant. 2004 plate.

I have always had, since owning issues with very rough running once started for 10-15mins. Having exhausted everything I can, apart from having the injectors sonic cleaned and seals replaced which is my final option.

Since then I have noticed some other issues.

When the car rough idles at the start, I get quite a lot of smoke. This smoke appears to have a blueish tinge to it. I get no other smoke whilst running and even booting it. Only when you start and it rough idles for 10secs or so.

I have also noticed now that the oil is being eaten, having topped it up 3 weeks or so ago, its down below minimum again!

So any ideas or help appreciated.

Would air in the system, which was one of the first suspicions through the tandem fuel pump (and gasket changed to no effect), cause blue smoke? Presuming that is caused by oil burning to quickly? Is that because it's leaking somewhere.

Somone mentioned oil seals? where are these and could these be an issue? Expensive? It has been on longlife servicing before I owned it.

Blue smoke on start up is oil residue on the valves. Used to happen in my Lexus.

Try an oil treatment (a really thick oil you add to the existing oil) I use this in my S4 and doesn't use as much now :)

So.....my Audi is now in for injectors out, ultrasonic cleaning, new bolts and seals!

Will know in a week or so if things have improved......will keep you updated as we go!

Interesting times...i hope I don't need any new injectors :S

I had a quick look in your other thread, but has anyone ever checked in the injector deviations using VCDS?

In measuring blocks you can view the injection deviations for each injector, which usually gives you some idea if one is blocked as it will show how much the ECU is trying to compensate by adjust the fuel from the each injector to make it idle smoothly, and you can usually go between -2 and +2 and its supposed to be okay, but on a nicely running vehicle with no problems its usually alot closer than that, normally +/- 0.5

If there is only injector that is vastly different, like one at +/-4 then its usually a problem with that injector, or cam wear, or poorly adjusted rockers after someone has had injectors out in the past.

The other thing is that once a fault code is thrown up it will normally stop adjusting those injection deviations, even if the fault code is for something entirely unrelated, so if dodgy temp sender threw a code, and caused poor running... even if fault is fixed the ECU still wont try and adjust the fuel from each injector until the code is deleted.
 
No codes ever Enzo....it's never thrown one up...

Yup measured values and two injectors are normally +-3 or so for first 1min or so....then they come in to line...

Cam wear has been checked as common but no problems and injectors have also been adjusted and rechecked!

Will see what new seals do...
 
What colour smoke have you had at cold start? My AVF does something similar and puffs out a blue/white smoke. Only when its colder mornings though. I am considering a set of injector seals for mine. If yours is also burning oil it could injector seals or possibly a worn turbo?

I have a dodgy temp gauge though. Think my temp sender is dud. Mpg id down to 40 now. Just ordered a replacement temp sender

Also I have exactly the same problem with exactly the same car and engine type. The only thing I notice with mine is that it's worse on very cold days. My old B5 diesel suffered with the same problem also but it's never really bothered me that much so I just live with it, although if you find a fix let me know :)
 
Mine used to run rough until I changed my cam belt and set my torsion angle to 0.0°

this can be checked with VCDS under engine measuring block 4 and the last read out the closer to 0 the better

its easy to adjust if its out too

Yeah same here its worse in cold weather. It doesn't bother me either. Its been like that for 3 years.

Roll on the summer.

What diesel are you using? Because I notice mine initially smokes quite badly on a cold start with cheap Supermarket fuel but since I have started using branded (Texaco, BP, Shell) fuel it no longer smokes on first start. Like you, the colder the weather the more it smoked.
 
That's what I always use to use and it's fine in the summer but as soon as it starts getting colder it smokes quite badly. Use as much of the Tesco fuel as possible before adding in the branded fuel and see if you notice any difference. It might take a couple of £10 fills before the last of Tesco crap is out of the system.

Hmm... Yeah I would give it another tank of Shell and see how it is after that, it might take a while before you notice the difference fully. I think all diesels without a DPF have a tendency to smoke slightly on a cold start and PD engines seem worse than others I have seen.

It sure won't do any harm! I am yet to try that, I tried some BP Ultimate Diesel and the car was soooo much smoother after using that, it's amazing what difference a decent quality fuel can make to an engine.
