Hi guys. I have had a problem with my s3 for a year or so where its blowing blue smoke. Originally i was told the breather system was really poor condition so i had that all redone at the cost of £300. Then as this didnt help they said thr turbo was the only other option. So i had the turbo refurbed and refitted at approx £1k and its still smoking. It seemed to improve but its as bad as it was. It seems to do it on start up. But also after a long journey. Cold and warm. It seems worse when i rev it and ive never noticed it smoke while driving just static. Im pulling my hair out over this. So any ideas guys? Thanks. Daz

Also, mine also smokes a touch on idle on a cold start or cold idle and according to the previous owner it has done for years but never worsened.

Doesn't particularly worry me.

Hi fella thanks for the reply. Its more than a touch at times. Im wondering if it needs hetter oil. Also i though stem seals were only on start up? Im wanting to strip the car out as its intended for track days. But i dont want it to last 5 mins lol. Thanks for your repky.

Hmm, I don't think it would just be on start but I may be wrong. What oil are you using?

I use Castrol Edge 5w30 fully synthetic.

That link is almost half price compared to my nearest Halfords. But then again, my car still has a light smoke issue...

valve stem leak can be all the time, probably worn guides allowing more movement than the seals can compansate for. That's what mine did, new guides, head rebuilt, job done

How much was that for parts and labour? Also, any idea how long it would take? Only have the one car...

around £200 in parts with the machine work and it took a few hours to stick it back together. no idea on cost of that bit

Oh that's not too bad, so a one day job? :)

Just wondering where around me I can take it...

Right ive taken a vid to show you. But a little more info. I let it tickover before leaving my folks and it was smoking from start. Got worse with a bit of heat. And worse as i revved it. Went up the road and gave it a bit of throttle and i could see it bellowing out. But after a few hundered meters it stopped and on a 45 mile journey didnt do it again from what i could see. I tried all sorts of dtiving and nothing. As soon as i pulled over i left the car running and looked. Nothing, i gave it a rev and nothing. But the longer i leave it ticking over the worse it got. And revving makes worse still. Is this still pointing to the seals and is there anything i can do to prove or aid this? Thanks so much for your replies. Ive spent so much on this its ridiculous. Daz

Ok cool just wanted to post a little more on it. Ive spent a while online and my symptoms are identicle to most others with proven stem seal issues. Cant believe ive spent 1300 on things ive not needed. Is there any chance this is a diy job. Im reading mixed views. Some say head on some say head off? Thanks for all previous help!! Daz

Yep
It's fixed I believe it was the stem seals and guides.
Had the piston rings done at the same time but sure it was the seals

This is exactly what mines doing Daz, and sometimes white smoke
I suspect stem seals and a possible cracked head
My new donor heads nearly ready to go on
