Build threads

I think the way zine works is mods move build threads into the subsection if deemed worthy. Only the biggest, best and more importantly most helpful to other users will get put in. The average random one small mod a month or two will remain in the general chat within the model section.

Im not slating those with little money or being elitist as I'm one of those people that doesn't do mods often or at all at the minute due to cash. So for that reason I don't see the point in a thread. If you want to show off a nicely polished car put it in the pics thread not start up a new thread saying its your "build thread" because that implies you're going to be doing a lot of work to it over the next x amount of months that people will follow. Not this is how I bought it.. I cleaned it, put on a filter and refurbed the wheels and that's how it stands today. I have lots of plans but I'm skint so they'll wait.

Not to say that people don't care about that just that its nothing like a build thread.

That's why I never named mine a "build thread" rather a subtle mod thread

I'm struggling to see the point why it matters if the average user comes along and posts up a freshly detailed pic of their car with a new filter installed as a build thread? If these are separated out completely from the main section of the forum there's still going to be less topics to scroll through - regardless if smaller builds are also posted in there.

As an example.. There's 4 out of the 20 on the main page now from the title I'd class as build threads, so even if some of them are small modifications that's 16 less topics to scroll through to find the one you'd be looking for. So even if the light modifiers still created build threads.. Would it really matter - the majority of ' what's the best air filter to get on my S3' one post questions wouldn't be in the build section anyways...

I'm sad prawny never mentioned me on here!!! I think my thread is a little more then just 007's and polishing cars!

You guys are making me lmao, imho all build threads are important to each individual op. yes some of the larger builds are very long and technical, but you all started somewhere and you didnt start on your post count, so that shouldnt be a restriction for all new build threads. I could go on, but i wont as i would be here for ages telling you all my thoughts on this subject and i want to watch the motogp. Have a good day everyone. I may come back and put my thoughts on here later, but for the moment, im done,, lol. :) x

This^^

At the end of the day, not all threads are "build" threads. Mine is called a project because... it is one. To me at least. Not everyone can afford to go big power, big brakes etc just so they're "interesting" to others.

Going back to the OP, I still don't see the issue. I come on and read the updates to threads I follow, or help in a thread if I can. It's a good thing it's all in one place.

I didn't actually start a progress thread until I knew I was going to rebuild the engine as I basically couldn't be *****. My thread has slowed right down now as its effectively finished so I did a nice little index page in the first post to make navigating round it nice and easy.

I'm all for a sub section just for builds but at the end of the day I do most of my posting on tapatalk and just view all the threads I've participated in anyway.

I think this forum works well as it is and a quick search normally does the trick. We don't want to do too much spoon feeding do we ;)

so the logic above says all threads/ updates etc are builds, so we perhaps the should have a sub section for questions and rename the 8l bit to builds, It doesn't matter what is done, it won't please everyone. Also however much tis is debated and voted on, nothing will change unless the admin decide it, It's non of our call.

For the record, I have no problems with it as it is, but would prefer the search to be used more.

I just think that if there were a build thread sticky, itd save us always repeating ourselves saying, read tufftys thread, read wellys thread, read westys thread, and having to link it to people.

As regular users we are fine how it is, we know the threads we use/view, but a new member coming along, wants to learn a but so he can start a build, can then view alllll the build threads in one place, without havibg to search for individual users that they arent familier with.

As a bt build noob, i can honestly say that going onto vwvortex and being able to see a list of all the builds together has helped MASSIVELY, theres so many small threads on these forums, the search function is only so good. No one likes spoon feeding people info, but easier the better.

The thread jardo made recently which is basically the ko3 bible, that is so so valuable to new users, its already been acknowledged by new members as a huge thread.

There should be one for ko4 users as well if somene could take the time to do it.

And as for BT builds, thats something that cant all be put into one thread, so a BT build list is the simplest and most useful option.

Why then can they not be aded to the sticky and referenced away from there. We are tying to reduce the stickies becuase they take up massive space, not add to them.

Maybe a section for builds in the look here before posting thread that links the larger builds

Thanks Karl, I agree we need to focus on making the forum more user friendly for new members.

The stickies section here is ridiculous, IMO we only need...

"BUILD THREADS" which should be added to and moderated by mods with the posting within the threads a free for all.

"TUNING THREADS AND FAQ" which should be as it is now.

"POST A PICTURE OF YOUR CAR"

That's it.

Wouldn't have to be moderated or anything... but if the POST OF PICTURE OF YOUR CAR thread was done.. could A3 and S3 be split up into different topics? Might help when people want to see what wheels people are running on their A3 or S3? Just a suggestion... I love the forum as is - makes the whole experience of owning an Audi better imo.

I feel 'Touched' that Mr Prawn inc me (and baby Ron) in the list, although i do bang on about Ron its nice to see it get noticed :)

in away ive done everything backwards, i mean most people get an 8L and fit a 007, wash it, fit nice wheels, conefilter, then 18months later start to up the power

Me on the other hand, bought it for £200 fitted another engine and found out the turbo went pig when the engine failed, so then built him (with the help of Prawn, Jardo, Russ and Tuffty) then when he had good power (up there with the best, but not finished) i then decided that suspension, bushes and brakes needed doing, most start with that lol

i hate the term build thread on the whole, it brings about a level of expectation, and lets face it, 95% of cars arn't built, they're just mildly altered anyway!

I don't think of mine as a build thread, it's just an online diary space where I dump all my crap to save me posting new threads every week.

I like it where it is to be honest, it was started in 8L because at the time it was something a little different, and the Project room board didn't exist. Everyone knows where it is after almost 3 years, and there are links to it on many other forums which I'd prefer didn't go dead if it were moved.

On the whole, I'm all for the idea of a 'build threads' subforum within 8L though, I have no interest in venturing out to the project room, it's dead in there.

Like i said, not our choice, we deal with what we have.

I hope to be wrong but its another click away just like the project room so I reckon it'll be the same Nick

Wow, look what I started!!!
my main annoyance with the site was that I loved looking at ALL the posts, but didn't have much interest in the many build threads, and it was the same ones popping up all the time. I wouldn't frequent the site as much as most on here, and hated sifting through to get to what I would call the normal posts, like on other forums.
If it stays the same, I'll still stay here looking around, but think it can be streamlined as above on some posts suggest.

Have I just read this right? You praising Jardo? :faint:

To be honest I quite like it how it is, it woukd be better seperated but you soon learn to browse through and look at what you like (I find myself reading mainly build threads and interesting break through stuff like tfsi k04 etc)

Although my build thread is pretty big now and may annoy some as theyre not interested in it, but I started it to collate threads with individual questions and put them all in one place and try to save posting more and more individual threads
I didn't even bother starting it until had gone stage 1, 2 and k26 turbo resulting in a bent rod because thats when I felt I could really use the advice of others on certain things (and I was bored after an op stuck on the sofa)

Im not by any means saying build threads have to be worthy or anything of the such everyone should do what suites them and what they enjoy :)

I think the 8L section should be broken down even further with S3, 1.8T, 1.6 having their own sections.

I think we should break it down into Power sub forums.

Poverty spec Sub 200
200-250 pretend fast cars
250-300 sensible fun road cars
300-350 the thinking mans choice
350+ because it makes you sound cool in the pub

 that ought to upset a few people

No no, I made a point of purposefully capping him inside the 'pretend fast car' group

Perhaps we should devise a rating system, with marks from 1-10 for cost, power, traction, economy, practicality etc etc.

Dare I say it, a st2 A3 would probably come out on top in the average of all scores

I think we need to work on bh/ton.

If you can show a weigh bridge ticket and dyno print out then you qualify. If not, you aren't serious enough.
