Decent engine size/mpg for the motorway... car recommendations anyone?

I've got an assignment from work for the new year and I need to be travelling 200 miles a day (100 each way)... will use the hotel when absolutely necessary otherwise home is where the heart is... I could take my 2.0 TFSI... that gives me 200 miles on 1/4 with air con off and sensible acceleration/speed.

Then I thought about the VW Polo Blue GT... a claimed 72mpg with Active Cylinder Turn off or something... can switch from 4 to 2 cylinders when cruising on the motorway...

Anyhow... my budget is 16k... I love the 2.0 TFSI too much to rack up the miles on the motorway... so this is what I have considered so far:

1. Audi A5 Coupe, 3.2 (2009)
2. Mercedes C280 Sport (2010)

My reasons being: comfortable cruiser, good motorway MPG and large fuel tank.

If it's for work will they not provide a vehicle? I had a Passat TDi 140 for about 12 months, well until I lent it to one of our guys who promptly ruined it It was a damn good car, although the electric handbrake was a pain.

My missus is quite environmentally conscious and focused on mpg and her little 57 Clio diesel regularly sits in the top 60's. Not the most refined thing in the world but comfy enough. I drove it from Herts up to liverpool before heading to Lancaster and round Yorkshire. 700+ miles on 1 tank of diesel. She looks quite shocked when I take her to a track and the computer says 9mpg lol

If you ever saw the topgear fuel challenge they had a polo blue motion, Subaru legacy and a big 2.5 turbo diesel jaguar I think it was and you'd think the polo would be the best on fuel but it was technically the jag.

I remember that episode of TG... there were so many variables but I hear what you are saying..
We do have company cars here but this pot of money is seperate... and the practice manager needs to use it up for some reason... so they said I can just buy one... we brought a few last year and the other GP's/health vistors use them for home visits...

I'm going to test drive the Merc C280 on the weekend.. thanks.

save yourself 12K and get a A4 130 TDi?
realistic 50+mpg and over 300Nm torque

I would imagine any VAG diesel should see you right, get some comfort in with it too

I ran a 320d for a year. Superb mile muncher, drove very well.
Even better with the Pro Nav/media pack when you are spending some time in the car.

I wouldn't - the 05 TDVi Jag XJ I had (same as the one Clarkson ran in that challenge) was sure economical on motorway trips, but it was also hideously expensive in repairs. I chopped it in for my 1.6 FSI A3 - which is much slower, less comfortable and less economical on m'way trips - but it doesn't go wrong as much and when it does it's not as expensive (touch wood).

If you wanted one though, my old Jag's still for sale at the dealer who bought it in March last year - and there can't be much left to go wrong cos I replaced almost everything on it....
