A3 3.2 2004 missfire

Anyone know how the exhaust flap works an how to test it? I can manually close it.

Also what is the correct sparkplug gap?
I did a site search for type of plugs an gap but only found for older models.

An 1 other question to do with the engine to exhaust metal earth strap hanger thing. what would make it snap?

So the sparkplug gap 0.9mm. an you say the bosh plugs.
An any ideas why that hock would break, is it common?

I think the exhaust strap breaking is quite common due to the movement of the engine. Mine was actually missing but made no difference when I replaced it tbh. I also had to have both flexible joints replaced on the downpipe as they were leaking..

i was not saying to use the bosh plugs or it should be bosh plugs, i was just saying all i done was google the spark plug gap for a3 3.2 v6 and it came up with the info required. if you go to ngk's website and put in the info for your car it will tell you about there plugs and that the gap is preset

I did as you said an only way i got the spark plug gap was by looking at the plugs preset. But often there preset is wrong that is why i was asking also pugs will change in sight slightly so knowing the correct gap you can easy set back. when i said i did a serarch it was just this site an only plug gaps was for the s3.

3.2 ju, you said it made no difference to your car. is there any other earthstraps on the exhaust. also now its not there as i removed from the car is. I now get a knocking (prob from the exhaust) an the esp has come on.

Called audi up for a new bit an there dont have a clue what i mean so have to go to them!
Just went there will take over a week to get the bit.

Fitted the new bit an the miss fire is still there, From what i can tell its number 6 that doing it.
The only thing I can think of it being is the injectors. what else would cause a miss on 1 cylinder no:6 changed plus an coil pack.

Ok been driveing the car now the miss fire now seems very random like 1 min i can stop at lights the revs are at 750 more looking an runing fine with no missfire, think after i give it a good boot. then 10 min later will be about 600-500 *** an will get the odd miss, when more cruseing. Have noticed a faint knocking also belive its the cluch as push the peddle down noise go's, only noitce on tickover like a floating cluch plate?

My 3.2 had the hesitant acceleration and the idle sticking at 1000 then dropping to 700. Kept throwing P1142 error until I did this. You could feel the car accelerate in stages. Removed the throttle body and gave it a good clean especially around the butterfly "hinge", improved it no end and no hesitency any more. Only cost a can of carb cleaner and 30 mins of my time.

Ok tock it off give it a good clean then let it rest by start getting the dash lights on a waiting 2 min, seems the same but, as went slow over a round about was like i put me foot on the peddle an well nothing happend yet then was fine after. like it was starved of fuel or air, also i have started to notice a black soot on the back bottom of the exhaust tale pies, any clues

Is the erratic idle getting worse over time? Are you unable to hold a constant 2000rpm idle when the cars in neutral? If the answers are yes I would strongly suspect you have the cam-chain/cam-chain adjuster issue. Get it looked at asap as the longer you leave it the worse it will get. As for the soot on the bottom of your exhaust tip, that's normal carbon deposits. If the soot slowly builds over about a week that's normal and should wipe off cleanly with a damp rag/spounge. Anything heavier then you may have a problem. Get it booked in for a full health check is my advice.

Thanks for the reply daver555. you could be right its the only thing left, an i get a warning via the computer readout for it... just audi did say too me that it was fine as was not that 90% sure, why i have not had it done yet. But its saying the chain is too tight by -1
also get a missfire on 5 an a minor on 3 from what i can tell. will have to get it check out only way to be sure.

If anyone know a good garage that not going to break my wallet, am out of work now... i would do it my self just not totaly sure, I'm in the bromley (kent) area.

Get the software update done ASAP, they are the exact same symptoms mine had before and after the chains were done!

I have not had the update done on my car as when it was in for the coil recall I said to Audi Glasgow about this but they told my it didn't exist but the info for the update was found on this forum and I just copied it down and kept it for the next time I'm in at Audi so I can give them it and get the update done. If you do a search you will find lots of info on this update.

Just did a search on it and it seems that few peeps were having the same problem with their 3.2l (incl TTs ) even seen that some were from Birmingham or Northampton which is close .. I ll ring Audi tomorrow and see (hope) if they can help ...
If anyone had the update done in the midland area please let me know ....
