Hi all, came across a link I found on here and think my car may need the same thing doing,it's called vw gear linkage reset on YouTube,in the video the guy has the gearbox and gear stick out of the car, anybody done this obviously with the box in the car??

Easy job or a pain in the ***?

Thanks
rich

Resetting the linkages is pretty easy to be honest. Access isn't too bad from memory. I just fitted the dieselgeek sigma six so it was done at the same time. I still get a slightly notchy 2nd sometimes but I just go easy on it until it's warmed up. Box's are always a bit notchier when cold. It's nothing compared to my old Quaife straight cut box haha.

So quite easy then? Enough room to move around in there? Will I need to remove air box or anything else?

Cheers man

WOrd of advice, if you have big hands then the black buttons is a biatch, i couldnt get my hand in so had to use a large flat head, just be careful not to pop it out.

Can someone expand a bit more on this please? My 2nd gear is a bit notch when cold, I've just had the gearbox oil changed but it's only slightly better really, I've never heard of this reset though.

Mate type into YouTube "vw linkage reset" it's the video with the gearboxes out of the car so you can see what he's doing. I wasn't sure if I would have enough room to get to the gearbox

Ok cool, thanks for posting the link! So this re-alignes the linkages and makes 2nd gear a lot smoother to engage when cold then?

I'm guessing it will just make certain everything is aligned properly and possibly sort the 2nd gear issue out,if you do yours before I do mine let me know if there's a difference mate

it makes sure the gear cables are the correct length and there is no slack in them. technically it should make gear selection easier, but it wont work miracles.
if you have notchy gears, consider replacing the dogbone mount bush with a poly one. this has improved gear selection for many members (minimises the engine rocking back and forth between gear changes).
failing all those, id guess you're into synchro issues.

Yea I've done the dogbone mount, fitted the red powerflex one, feels aload better and more precise. As for the notchy 2nd gear il probably do the gearbox oil change before I start thinking of synchros.

Cheers Mate

I think these gearboxes are common for notchy 2nd gear, mines done it from new, just have to take it steady, ive also found that if its reved quite high it seems to go in easier.

Yea so I've been reading, thought I'd try a few things to improve it,noticed your in west Yorkshire, where abouts pal?

Great video! Mine's occasionally notchy into 2nd from cold so I might try this. If my hands can't reach the black button then I'll dangle one of the kids in to press it in for me.
