Hello. I'm And from Lincolnshire (via Wales) and i'm in love with three things.

2nd equal are by Ferdinand of Stuttgart and Auto Union of Ingoldstat

I've had the Quattro for a week and it's fab:thumbsup:

Done 575 miles on 11.3 gallons! (by gps / brim to brim) that's 49.7 MPG

I do two 45 mile round trips a day most of which is steady 50-60 along A-Roads with the odd blast (and a little town).

My gaster is absolutely flabbered:yes:

so much so that a set of 18" Avus' are due soon...(and the modding starts...)

49.7mpg is almost unbelievable! Best I ever got was 45mpg on a 500 mile trip with no traffic.

Welcome And! 49mpg is good, but not unbelievable at a steady 50-60mph... sadly that will drop steadilly as speed increases (40mpg @ 70mph, 30mpg @ 95mph, etc) - but it's still not bad for a 12yr old design engine and 1700kg's with permanent quattro.

Think about a mild remap: some people get 220-240bhp (or a lot more with other mods), but a lot just go for the 200-210bhp "economy" remap that gives you a bit more torque lower down which allows you to hold a higher gear at lower speeds...

Avus 18's are recommended: a great OEM look that not many have done (I liked the RS4 alloys, but was put off when I realised they were all reps due to body width differences and after seeing too many low quality replicas - at least with the S4's you can get the genuine "Ronal" wheels to fit your car!). 2nd hand recommended, they're >£500 a corner new!!!

Think about keeping the original wheels as they make a great set for winter tyres (that's what I did and I'm loving it!!)...

I'm hoping for 45mpg (day to day) and think that's readily obtainable - the car runs very well (109k) and has been well serviced nearly every 10k for life. May look at a remap but want to get the niggles sorted first (very few TBH).

I suspect I'm like many here in finding the blend of refinement, pace and practicality just about unbeatable and we're the beneficiaries of the renowned build quality at a time when most are being turned into little cubes of ferrite (do they still do that?)

18's Avus' have been found and the S4-ing commences. The 16's are staying for winter as suggested lostbok (i had a scooby legacy and did the same with that).

I have a fondness for old mountain bikes too (hence the car) and the modding of these is just as adictive albeit cheaper (retrobike - same user name)

49mpg is incredible, I get 45 from my 1.9 on motorway runs with the cruise on, hopefully the chip next month will give me a little bit more..... Also going down the S4 route with mine, have a full front end conversion, just trying to source a rear bumper now, like gold-plated hens teeth for an avant....

Unusual colour on the car as well.....

Colour is Laurel Green LY6R - doesn't appear in any of the regular brochures i found - kind of a metallic light racing green (not like BRG which is greener if that makes any sense!)

Re MPG i couldn't believe it myself - so as i've been doing a lot more short trips / town driving yest / day and 125 miles - back to brim took just under 3 gallons so 42mpg.

i'd be happy with that generally mind but given most of my trips are 22 miles up and down the A15 at 50mph will prob average a little more.

my business partner has a 2.0tdi Sline avant and regularly achieves 55mpg.

but as we're both (permanently) broke we drive like mother theresa on a snail chariot!

Welcome and nice to know you are happy with her.I had an 03 manual for 2yrs and found over 40mpg realistic cos I tend to keep the revs down and use the torque to keep moving .Miss this with the tiptronic which replaced it but again on a steady run this will achieve 40.Both had tuning boxes which may help as maybe V Power does
 
And - I know I'm stirrin, but "aim higher" :)

Admittedly from warm amd with a CLEAR run on empty roads, I tried to set a record over a 10mile stretch, driving like miss daisy, 50mph-ish on empty roads where I didn't have to stop completely at any junctions... 63.9mpg avg over 10 miles on the DIS which has proven itself to be very accurate on brim to brim checks in the past - note some DIS's are be WAY out and I believe they can be recalibrated, if need be.

I know it's meaningless due to the short distance and use of DIS, but was fun just to see quite how frugal the car can be if you just get yoruself into 6th gear as soon as possible (at around 45mph) and just hold it there, resisting the urge to do a Jean Luc Picard

My driving consistent's purely of 20 minute commutes, often in the middle of the night so I'm not pootling along, 10 minutes runs into town and a lot of rural lane driving. If I drive like a pensioner I (once..) averaged 37.6 over the tank, bit more trypically I get 33, it seems to depend massively on the type of driving you do and roads you're on. There's no such thing as a long straight road around these parts.

Ha ha... I only bought the V6 'cos it sounded better ;)

I never said that's what I got on average... much the same as you: 32-36mpg depending on mix of driving...

I know: a 10 mile snapshot is meaningless, but if a higher proportion of my driving was more like that day, rather than practicing keeping the turbo the right level of boost to hold drifts, then I would get a lot closer to 60mpg, rather than 30mpg :)

BTW - talking of 1.9's and such: ignore the new 2.0TDI claim of "177PS" cars as a comparison to ours... they're NOT the same type of power delivery as the 2.5V6... the are nice cars, surprisingly quick and very, very capable... so if economy is your be-all and end all, then they might be the way forward, but my car felt like a lithe and responsive little hot-hatch when I got back into into it compared the spool-up and boost delivery of the 2.0TDI.

Granted when I got into the corners, I could feel the extra weight of the engine in mine, making me all the more grateful for the RS4 RARB, but any time you were on the loud pedal, there was NO comparison!

Comparisons were: my car versus a 2011 A4 B8 S-Line Technik (2 days driving) and a 2012 A6 SE (5 days driving).... not quattro in the other cars, but that should have made them feel MORE responsive, not less (until you break traction). I'd be interested to see a DSG kitted 2.0TDI 'cos the ratios felt VERY short due to the narrow lump of torque... but the only version of that is the A4 Allroad - not available in the A4 / A5 regular cars... it's multitronic OR quattro... never Stronic + quattro with that engine.

And having driven those others, the lump of torque, even from that little 2.0TDI makes quattro all but essential!

Dead right James .I mainly do urban trips in and aroundSoton but have just done an evening run up to Hook and back on theM3 of 80 miles with just a brief stop and filled up with V power a mile in DIS showed 330 in the tank about normal .Traffic was light and must have averaged 70plus .DIS now shows 420 to go so total 500.It was odd to watch the 330 climb all the way

I have this on my Sport with cruise which my son did when he owned it .I dont think it was dear cos he got the bits on ebay in Germany but it seemed tricky.Can ask him if you are keen
 
the Avus' 18's are on it, ride stiffened compared to the tractor rubber before, not sure how people do 19s or 20s on an A4!

enjoying car and been rushing so mpg down - reckon between 40 and 45 and as above going to go for DIS - how and why didn't this come as standard on a near £30k car????

What pressures?My sticker says 41 but I wonder if less would be a good idea.I thin DIS and cruise were to justify the SE spec

mike = i'm running them at 36 psi the same as the 16/17's label - mine are s4 orig but i've no idea what they (s4's) ran as?

According to my 'ebay' brochure find (99p) the s4 avant is 79 kilos heavier than the 2.5tdi q!

I think I eventually dug out somehting that said I should be running my V6 TDI quttro on 18's at 40psi, some peopel report running similar cars and wheels at about 32psi.

36PSI seems to give a bit more comfort with no noticable sidewall change, so that's what I've settled on - although I do nudge it up for long motorway journeys or if I'll be fully loaded / towing (only a tiny trailer and well balanced, but it is more weight).
 
I am going to try 36 cos 41 seems rock hard compared to my SE with 16s but they also had 36.Got to watch the tread wear though

likewise... I had 40-42 psi at first, but it did feel rock hard...

I wouldn't advise below 36psi, but if they stay at 36psi, should fine.
 
33-34 psi does me good..... any more and the rides like the fair ground dodgems.....

I will try 36 first and also need to watch the mpg.Dont know who or how the sticker figures are set may be just guesses

sir i'm afraid i've been doing a multitude of short trips (up to 10 miles) and barely nudged over the 40mpg this time

395 miles on 9.6 gallon = 41.14mpg

that's with the Avus' mind (speedo now almost exact) and higher rolling resistance!!!

anyone beating this score??????:rock:
