Hi ppl

Driving home today from work and car made a big bang and puff of black smoke. All power gone and in limp mode. Luckily was around corner from home. Switched off engine and rolled it into drive. After inspection and afte removing pipes to the turbo. The turbo was hanging from the intercooler pipe. The turbines have shattered. Now need to to find a turbo😥. Been able to get one but the Questions is will a 2006 2.0 tdi quattro turbo fit my 2005 2.0 tdi blb engine? Or if anyone has a turbo for sale please give me a shout. Thanks

As long as the turbo is of a PD 130/140 longitudinal engine then it will fit. I would look for a PD170 turbocharger, is comonly known as BV43. It will be almost plug and play- needs the compressor hose moddifying a little...good for 210bhp with a decent remap !

Make sure there's no debris in the intercooler and wash and drain the oil from the intercooler or you will hydrolock the engine !

Thanks for the reply. I sourced a turbo of the same kind. I've stated to take the old one off and can't get 1 of the bolts off. Wat do u mean by hydrolock?

Its when a fluid, in this case oil, enters the cylinders. Liquids cant be compressed on the compression stroke like air can, which can cause the engine to hydrolock causing serious damage. A tiny bit of oil will burn off, but a decent amount entering the cylinders can cause problems.

Thats for that. After I took the turbo off which was in 2 pieces. Lol. I took apart ill the intercooler pips off and the intercooler and loads of oil come out. I then pressure washed the intercooler and the pops to get all the oil out n make sure no bits of the turbo vains were left in the pipes. Put all together and started up all ok. Took for a drive and the car is making a load hissing sound when accelerating. Pop the hood and it shoulda like it's coming from the near turbo. The car is also missing and not driving like it was. What could it be? One of the pipes leaking? Any help would be great

Thanks

Was your "new" turbo a known good one ? Whistling noise is related to worn turbo bearings. The engine did not rev on it's own after the turbo shaft broke, did it ? You had trouble stopping the engine ?

The guy i got it off took it off a running car. i check any play in the shafts and it was minimal and also the shafts spun freely when turned by hand. When the turbo failed, broke into 2 pieces. one end on the mani and the other on the intercooler pipe the car made a big bang and loads of smoke. the engine didnt rev on its own when it broke. i was going up a hill when it happened and foot was on accelerater when it happened. i turned the engine off 30 secs after as i was top of the road and let it roll into the drive.

update, the car has stopped missing but no power. took it for a drive and it feels like a NA car rather than a turbo. still hear the hissing sound like boost is leaking or something. could be a MAF? still need to investigate the hissing. any ideas?

When you replaced the turbo - Did you remove the manifold from the engine block and bolt up the turbo to it - Or put the turbo on while manifold was in situ (connected to the block) ?

Reason I ask - If you've done the later (like I did) your actuator flap (inside the manifold housing) might not be shut/aligned properly causing the turbo not to create boost/power.

hissing npoise is a boost leak nothing else check all hoses and connections intercoolers may have a hole in it

update. found the hissing. was the turbo to intercooler pipe. Had a few holes. was late night when i was working on car and couldnt get hold of another pipe. used duck tape for a quick fix untill i got hold of a pipe. took for a drive and drove easy car drove fine. turbo spooling ok. after it warmed up i gave it a lilttle, not too much and got a woooosh noise, like a pipe popped and lost power, car jerking and not picking up revs, revs jumping and black smoke. cant be the turbo again can it. rolled it home, on idle the care revs fine but when in gear revs will jump and car will judder. i havent had a chance to look at it cuz im sick of the car now. going to look at it over weekend and see what caused it. any ideas? sound to me like a pipe popped off. cuz when the turbo blow it went bang and loads of black smoke but car didnt have the other symptoms.

To be honest, it still sounds like the intercooler pipe. When I cleaned my EGR valve, I didn't realise it but I hadn't secured the intercooler pipe properly and I had jerking about as if it was something more serious.

First check the intercooler pipe is secured with the metal clip properly (I hadn't pushed it down properly to clip into place), otherwise it'll be because you have holes in the pipe. I had to get a new one and cost over £60 at the stealers!

thanks for the reply. im going to have a look at it over weekend. yeh its jerking like the engine *****ed up. felt like smashing it into the wall but no power in the car to even do that. lol. £60.00 for a pipe. ****** stealers. i will have to get one before i open it all up.

update. turbo to intercooler pipe popped off. need a new pipe. been to stealers. £137.00 before VAT. shocking. told then to keep it. lol. anyone know where i can get one from. been to local breakers and no one got one. help needed....

ive just put a search in fleabay m8 for ar 2.0tdi breaking and theres a fair few to choose from.....

update ppl

Got a pipe from fleabay 20 quid. stealers wanted 130. lol. fitted it last night, also cleaned my MAF with contact cleaner. when id take the MAF out the car would make a humming noise and when it put it back in it would disappear. but that was when i 1st started the car so ECU wasnt picking up any faults with the MAF. after id drive it and then check MAF the car would sound the same with or without the MAF. WOW what a difference. car pulls better than before. idle is alot better. car would missfire before betweem 1500-2000rpm. this has now disappeared. use to puff black smoke on acceleration, this has also disappeared. Ive got engine management light on, but not effect the cars driving. might be cause due to the MAF but will find out more after it get it VAG. Thanks for all your input ppl. been a great help

update on CEL, had it put on VCDS and was told it was communication errors and a reset would take it off. got it reset and it went off. a drove it a few times and it was fine no CEL. next morning started up and came back on. im comfused now. if it was communication errors it shouldnt have come back on. i havent unplugged battery since. I need to invest in VCDS. cant keep paying for scan. i will have to take it down again and get it scanned. Cant really think what it is without getting it scanned. never getting an audi again. back to jap for me at the end of the year
