Tyre blowout on A13

So I was driving home tonight down the A13 towards dartford bridge at a considerable speed when all of a sudden it felt like my car had just gone over a chunk of rumble strips and started pulling slightly to the left. I instantly slowed the car down and pulled over to the hard shoulder trying not to press the brakes too much as I didn't want to spin out of control. I got out to have a look at what was wrong to see this:

I had the tyre checked just a couple of days ago and was told that my tyres were perfectly fine so I'm thinking I may have run over something that damaged the tyre wall on the way home and the tyre just gave way due to the speed I was travelling at.
I changed the tyre over to the spare and got home safely but it looks like I am off to get a couple new tyres tomorrow.

Wow, that's some scary stuff. Hopefully the rim wasn't damaged. Will definitely make me think again before doing ridiculous speeds.

The rim didn't look damaged but tbh I didn't really have a good look as the first thing I did when I saw it was panic! Took me a minute to remember that I had the trusty spare in the boot.
I guess I will find out what what damage I have in the morning, hope its fine and I can just fit another tyre on.

Good job you had a spare and not the Mobility system. Don't think the gunk would have sealed that

If you went over somthing surely it would have damaged the front tyre first? What make of tyre was that .Also IIRC blowouts are 90% under inflated tyres .Glad your ok mate scary stuff that is

Wow, got away lightly there. No rim damage, and no spin.

What tyres are they so I make sure I never fit any!

Glad you're OK though, could have been a very different thread, so well done for keeping it under control. To be honest mate I'd be changing both tyres on that axle in case the other one has similar tendencies, you may not be so lucky next time round.

I'm thinking the A13 is jinxed or cursed this week. I was on it a couple of days ago and got absolutely mullered by a lorry kicking up grit etc from the central reservation. My windscreen now has little chips all over it, right in my field of vision!
They really need to sort out parts of the A13, there's all sorts of crap laying in the road and at the sides. Maybe you went over something, but it'd have to be pretty significant to do that sort of damage I'd imagine.

As above, what kind of tyre was it?? Not a remould was it??

Thanks guys, your right I am lucky that it wasn't wet out there and there was only a few cars on the road. I honestly didn't think it was that bad and I guess that's why I kept my cool about it until I actually saw the rim. Believe me after I saw it I panicked and just sat back in the car for a minute trying to think what to do, first thought was I don't have breakdown so how the hell am I going to get it sorted at 11.30 at night! Totally forgot that I did have a spare and it's just a tyre blowout, not an actual accident.

It was a budget tyre, and have only had it on as a interim tyre... Funny cos the garage that does my tyres had just told me the other day that he has 2 nice tyres for me but I said I would come back as my MOT is next moth and my tyres should last fine until then.

It wasn't under inflated as I am anal about that stuff and always check my tyre pressure... Though on that drive home it did feel a little slippery on corners as if I had lost a little traction but I didn't think too much of it... But honestly have no idea why it happened. Going to head up to the tyre place in a bit so I'm going to find out what damage I have if any.

I can only echo what's already been said, mate.. Glad you're ok! That really has destroyed itself! Budget tyres aren't great, but neither are our shi**y roads! Main thing is you're ok, hope it hasn't done any damage to your baby, dude..

no just went out to the car and had a good look but no damage to the car or the inside of the rim, as you can see from the pics the outer edge of the rim still has the wall of tyre on it so i cant see if there is any damage there, but the other side looks fine... in fact i dont think it even touched the floor as i see no scraping on the edge of the rim... off to bluewater now and then the garage, wish me luck.

glad your alright ash, not good at all. Very unusual but be wary of the tyres and possibly avoid budget ones at all cost. My car when i bought it had 4 new budget brand tyres fitted. They are clearly unsafe in the wet i cant wait to change them. I just cant justify it atm as they are still full of tread (Ruddy things wont wear out!)

Scary stuff! I'm surprised given it's a so called premium tyre! Even more so if it had the correct load rating for your car?

Was it bought as a part worn? Might have had a dodgy repair? Or possibly should not have been repaired. Was it over 6 years old?

Have a look at what's left of the tyre, there should be a 4 digit number on the side wall 1 & 2 show the week number and 3 & 4 show the year of production. I could be way off the mark but and it could have been caused by debris on the road. You'll probably never know.

I think I'd have ended up sitting in the car wondering what the hell to do at first as well. It totally throws your brain out of sync when these type of things happen.

Michelin PS is usually so good, what I'm guessing may have happened is you've gone over something in the road, or it's deflated during that journey, the carcass have overheated and shredded itself. It's not easy to tell when rears are deflated as there isnt much weight over them. Usually first sign is poor **** end handling in the corners.

A3 rears wear badly on inner shoulder so makes me wonder if guy has done a quick visual and presumed OK. I had mine down to a most canvas on inner rim with 3mm at outer edge of tyre at last MOT.

i think your right. I am thinking something must have happened that day to that tyre and in the end when i was powering along the heat must have got to it and just ripped it off.

thanks guys for your wishes, i too am glad that nothing happened to me or the car and the rim! checked the rim over properly and not a scratch on the outer rim which tells me the rim didnt even touch the floor. that wall of tyre left on the outer edge protected the rim am indeed me!

I'd agree with Warren too, I've seem it a few times annoyingly on our hiredrive vans. They pick up nails etc at the dump & drive with the flat not realising (or caring!) until it totally destroys it.

in my opinion the only thing that can cause such a thing is either the previous use of a "TYRE PUNCTURE SEALANT" or a if the tyre was a remould.
when using a tyre sealant it clearly states that the tyre should ne replaced after the journey is completed. it meant to serve as a temproary remedy.
Do you know the history of the tyre or did you purchase it secondhand??

It was one of those part worn tyres that you get from tyre places, thing is it's my mates place and they always sort me out really decent tyres. And if I remember correctly the tyre had been on for around 3 months... First I had it put on as the last one was below legal limit so I didn't want to get pulled over but then I kind of forgot about it since it was doing the job. It's not the first time I have used tyres from him but it has woken me up to make sure to check the tyres properly!
