Turbo chatter

my mods are APR stage 2 map, neuspeed big cone with heat sheild, pipewerx 3inch downpipe, 3inch de-cat, n47 delete, forge 007 dv, on spirited gear change i have loud turbo chatter which sounds very good, but at elscar vag meet today i was talking to a guy with a skoda octavia 1.8t vrs with hybrid k03s and other mods and i mentioned i had turbo chatter and he said that will be damageing my turbo because chatter is basically bringing my turbo internals wheels etc to a stop which makes the chatter when they start to spin again, forgive me for non technical description, but is thais true am i damaging the turbo and if so what do i change to stop the chatter, cheers for any replys.

That kind of chatter is normally associated to a poorly DV but as you have a 007p then its not so straightforward... have you always had this chatter or is it something that's started recently?

the chatter started when i had the 007 fitted, but it became louder when i had n247 delete, the 007 came with a yellow spring tuffty i believe. the apr stage 2 map made my standard dv louder but 007 started the chatter.

I had a chatter sound like that after having some work done on my S3. I had a split in the pipe that goes directly into the top of my DV, Could have a quick check as it was a quick and easy fix

If I am honest it sounds like the DV isn't working somehow.... as you have an N249 delete I assume the vac pipe is going to the DV straight from the inlet mani now? no check valves etc?

To test the DV is 'working', undo it from the TIP and let the engine idle (you may have to stick your thumb inthe DV inlet to the TIP to stop it from hunting while you do this but on idle the DV should be open... if it is not then something is not right...

I have had this before on a previous car and although the reasons behind it were a little concerning (!) the car ran fine until at least I sold it (don't know what happenned to it after that but was fine at the time!!) and that was at 77000 miles. It did have an after market vta dv fitted and I believe the chatter was caused by air being forced back through the vanes on the turbo when lifting off causing it to stall which as you say isn't good when it comes to turbo life. It did release properly when given a bit more boost so maybe a different spring in the dv would cause it to release earlier and therefore release the air before it gets forced back through the turbo? The turbo was a TD04 which although not capable of huge amounts of power was a fairly solid unit whereas as other more fragile units may have let go. I would suggest talking through with a specialist to either sort the problem or put your mind at rest.

never to busy sandip, i would like to sort it asap, as ive been driving S3 a lot with being of work, ive been changing gear and enjoyed listening to the whooshchhchhh, but if it causes damage i dont want to hear it anymore.

Shane was it the vag car meet at elscar hertige center?

Give me a call tomorrow when you've finished work, i'll put my bailey dv on for you, no harm in trying it :)

Was it any good? Think i went last year or the year before and it was a waste of time, cost me and the misses over £20 for pure ****. Said id never go again.

You go too sandip? When i went it was better in the car park next to the centre lol plus it was free.

Yep, it was pretty good this year. I went 2yrs ago and it was ok, couldn't make it last year.

Was a good show this time though, some pictures may be uploaded on the 'Major Show section' eventually

hi i have just fitted a ram air induction kit on my w reg audi a3 turbo and its now got turbo chatter, its sounds ace but is it going 2 damage my turbo ??? ;)

possibly, and check your pipes to your DV as that would cause the chatter if you did'nt hear it before..
presuming its chatter you describe and not just induction noise now you have open induction kit... and now hear all new sounds, which may include a previously non working dv?

never heard the noise b4 and all pipes are fitted tight but my old RST had loud chatter soon as i put a induction kit on,i have seen a few posts about uprated DV valves is forge the best to go for ?

No such thing as an 'uprated' valve unless you are pushing over 350hp and need a larger valve to vent the larger volume of air associated...

Latest Forge valves (007p, 008) have revised pistons that actually seal (previously leaked as do most if not all aftermarket DV's... if after functional then just buy a new OE valve... if you want a little bling and have cash burning a hole in your pocket buy a Forge 007/008...

ok thanks for the advice i am new to playin with modern turbo engines :uhm:

RST did'nt have a DV at all as std did it? so yea, flutter noise etc would have been normal on them

no the RST did not have a DV like i said i am new to playing with modern turbo engines i have only had rs turbo's in the past that i no like the back of my hand lol
