    Will this stump you?

Probably not, but it certainly stumped 3 Audi parts technicians, and 1 mechanic today.

I recently purchased a 2000 1.8T, and in an effort to restore her to original OEM state, I am trying to kit her out with the original missing parts.

Now this is the question, does your "petrol" A3 have a sound deadner/dampner (the large plastic undertray) attached. This is not the small plastic peices that attach to the bumper, but the large tray that covers the rest of the engine bay!!! The audi parts computer says there is no such part for a petrol A3, moreover, 3 parts techs, and 1 audi mechanic say the same.....I find this strange, as I found one for sale on e-bay, and notice they have been referred to here several times?

    Can you help!!?

Our old '99 A3TS definately did as I managed to rip it off reversing up a dirt road, so had to replace it.

I remember I had to get a replacement one for my S3 and it took the dealer three goes to get the correct part. They said that ETKA was wrong??

Stating the obvious, the best bet would be to get ahold of the part number off someone, or alternatively sign up at www.vagcat.com (free) and then have a look through the ETKA diagrams. I think this is the one you are after is either item 1 or 2 herehttp://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/au/A3/...09/56/2575456/ . The diagrams can be a hard to comprehend!

    Good luck...

Yep, that is the diagram they were pondering over...

they say the cover is only for diesels, so, if someone can actually see one under their 'pertrol' engine, that would prove conclusive....

My suggestion would be a breakers. VW wanted to charge me nearly £200 for my TDI when I had it but they did say the 1.8T was a lot cheaper because it is smaller and there is 2 separate parts.

Mine had one and Audi/VW couldn't get the the correct clips to hold it on properly so it got ripped off too. The folk in parts don't have a clue!

So I am guessing from the response, that it is an expensive plastic item, which is of little practical use!!?

I've had mine off for weeks since it got cracked on one of those mini speed humps! I think its designed to increase fuel economy. Not necessary really but yes does come on petrols mine is a 1.8 sport.

Phoned VW today, they were excellent help. They are willing to put it up on the ramp to see if it will fit etc, etc....Worth a try!!!

12 years at a dealer now and can guarantee you that a petrol a3 or S3 have small undertrays, and diesels have large undertrays!!

Thanks for the reply, but would a large undertary fit a petrol engine? and, if so, is there any benefit to having one installed?

yeah it would sort of fit, would need to fit some more fast clips in the subframe, but it really is a stupid idea sorry dude, that car was not made for the excess heat to be locked in under the engine, you never know what difference it might make!

I've got an A3 TDI (PD130) with a plastic undertray on. Is it fine for me to take this off completely? I always thought it was to help keep muck out of the engine bay?

Yeah take it off if you like it wont do any harm - as you say the sump might get a bit dirtier, but thats how it should really be anyway lol
