Just got 4 secondhand 16" wheels with Dunlop SP winter sport tyres. 2 new 205/55 R16 and 2 used 205/55 R16. All for the grand price of.

    £70

I have already tried them on and they fit. Going down 2 sizes shouldn't cause any problems?

What's the real world difference when having winter tyres, I mean both performance and economy wise? I don't have any experience on this and don't get what people saying most of the time...

Anyone could explain this please :)

    Cheers

I mainly put winter wheels and tyres on as I live outside of Harrogate on a hill. The wife uses the car every day to take the kids to school.
My thinking is if it helps her drive into town safely and if she was to hit a curb it's just an old wheel.

For the small amount of distance we will drive over winter, economy is not an issue, as for performance, again she/I will not be ragging it around when we have snow on the ground. :)

I have gone down from 18" to 16" the used pair have about 4m so will go on the back. The wheels are very plain and scabby, but it's just for winter ;-)

    At £70.. cannot complain...

I picked by putting together a set of genuine 17" 5spoke Audi alloys with Mich Aplin tyres for £290. So the car still looks good..
Well worth the extra grip in the colder days esp if snow is lying on the road.

Oh did I mention my car has Quattro....:superman:

It's something i've been doing for a few years now, both on the Subaru and now my S3. Well worth it for living at the top of a hill where I am! lol.

Ive run 16's with winter tyres on my 170 for the last 3 years without any issues

winter tyres simply work better in colder conditions. You have more grip when pulling off and under braking. Equally when it snows I NEVER got stuck :). They just simply gripped and moved the car forward. In the worst of it last year, at times, I was the only car on the road around Merthyr lol

did i mention mine is FWD and running over 200bhp. With winters traction has never been an issue :)

you got a steal at £70!!!

    Thanks.
I was a bit worried going down 2 sizes and the car will look **** with the scabby wheels on it. Might look for some different wheel in the new year.

The only reason I got a good deals it my bother has his own garage and a customer got the new tyres ready for winter then sold the car. So the new tyres are 6 months old but never been on the road.

Cheers, I have the s3 so think 17 is the smallest that will fit over the front brakes, but would prefer 16 as winter wheels to make the tyre options a lot cheaper.
