Hi
I started to get a wierd gearbox noise this week or so it seems like it is coming from the gearbox it sounds just like a knackered wheel bearing but only makes the noise on over run or once the clutch is depressed. I suspected that it might have been the release bearing so i got a new cluth kit and solid flywheel seens as though it was getting stripped but once fitted all back together it is still making the noise.

Any help would be much appreciated

does it make the noise on idling ? cause mine does couple knocks every 1min or so sometimes might wanna check the spline that its not loose, besides that given its not that issue then as you have fitted a SMF they tend to make noise unlike the DMF designed for them

No it doesnt make the noise when idling it only makes the noise when slowing down in gear if you press clutch or knock it out of gear the noise goes. I dont think its down to the smf as it started to make the noise on the original dmf hence the reason i changed it. It sounds just like a wheel bearing humm but had them all checked.
Im worried its something internal.

Unfortunately mate the gearbox is the problem and needs to be reconditioned/replaced. It will progressively get worse until it crunches into gear one day and rips itself to shreds. It's only a matter of time now until it goes.

If you catch it early, you can fix it with a recon. If it goes bang clatter clatter, you'll need a complete new gearbox.

Mine is making that same noise, So I've bought a used gearbox from ebay and I'm getting that reconditioned and swapping it over soon.

My girlfriends dad is the best gearbox technician in my area and he's confirmed it's on it's way out.

Sorry to bring the bad news.

Mine makes a fairly quiet whine sometimes on deceleration too.... I'm gonna drop the oil and replace in the gearbox / front diff and rear diff to see if that makes any difference. Out of interest - what does it cost to recondition a gearbox?

dancuz;

I wouldn't particularly recommend that mate, the whirring noise is a bearing on it's way out, causing 2 gears to rub together, that causes swarf (bits of metal) to mix with the oil and ruin it.

So why not change the oil?

Well simple answer is a difficult one to explain, because there is no physical proof it is true... But 80% of the time, when you change the oil on a box that is on its way out, like mine, yours and alot of others, it CAN tip it over the edge.

I'm not sure how much a recon for one of these boxes is exactly but I'll ask the question later. It depends a lot on how far gone the box is too.

Hope this helps

Ben

Thanks for that ben it doesnt come as a suprise i was expecting it to be b***cksed to be honest. Does extra power and torque cause this or are they overall preety strong boxes? I think mine is a ezw but would have to double check.

Extra power and especially torque will cause problems yes, but overall they are pretty poor gearboxes as standard anyway. There are the odd few seemingly invincible ones, but mostly they all go at some point. The only real way to strengthen them is fit steel syncros and uprated bearings but that will cost at least £1000.

If you want a price for a repair and a recon then PM me with your details and I'll get you a quote.

I'd like to know if anybody has done this and gained any results too, just been watching the video might give it a go.

My tdi 130 8l does this. Its done 175k though :) I only hear the whine on slow down and when building up speed. Id have a recon but not at the crazy prices. When it goes, it goes. Until then it can crunch away

a3rob - Where you from? I know the best gearbox guy in Doncaster and will be able to get you a decent price if you want a replacement.

Same frame of mind here a3 rob as regards it goes when it goes, but mine only does it whilst slowing down. Noise goes as soon as you press the fast pedal lol. Im in doncsster pioneer181 might need a contact soon :-(

No problem. The guy is known as Gearbox Dave. Specialises in clutches and gearboxes and there's loads of dealerships that use him in the local area. He's ****** good at what he does. He's the only person I let touch my car. Very well priced, with warrenty and he has it in and out with a few hours. If you don't have someone that you use locally then this is the guy. He does servicing and repairs as any normal garage does but he does a lot that dealers can't do or won't touch as it's too difficult. I've been using him for years now and can't recommend him enough.
