Hi all,

I've bought an S3 8P (57 plate). Had it since February, and it's been sweet.
Today, whilst shamefully driving through a maccies drive-thru with my windows down I noticed there is a screeching/squealing sound whilst under low load. It doesn't happen when the car is idling, but only when you release the clutch and begin to drive. It seems to stop after around 1200rpm, and it does it when you change gear at low revs. It's probably most noticeable when reversing with the windows down.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance

Quite possibly. How much are we looking at a replacement clutch release bearing? It's going to be subframe gearbox and clutch out right? Ugh

I,m no mechanic but it seems to me that if it is the bearing and you do have to take the clutch and gearbox out you would be better off replacing the clutch as well..

If it is that (I would get it diagnosed correctly by a mechanic first) then yes the clutch and box has to come out. Whilst you've got it out though you may as well change the clutch as well as the bearing for piece of mind. If it was me I would also change the fly wheel as they are dual mass and they looooove to go faulty as I found out 2 weeks before Christmas last year.

I didn't even answer your question then did I lol. It was £500 for parts and £100 for labour from a vag specialist when I had mine done

****** hell that's cheap labour!! Thanks for the info, I'll look into it. There's no inherent danger of me driving whilst it's in the state until I can get it in a garage, right?

You will eventually just loose drive mate that's all

Not sure if it's anything to do with it, but got in the car this morning and the cars thrown up the engine warning light (yellow).
ARGHHHH!!! Anyone near Macclesfield got VCDS? (looked on the map and the nearest member hasn't been on line for months!)

Cheers chaps

I'm in Manchester mate (audenshaw) I've got it but I only got it last month so I'm still learning, I can scan it for you though but can't guarantee anything else lol

Friday night/Saturday morning is best for me mate if that's any good to you?

Also would be very interested in finding out who did the job for you at that price as that's £300 less than I've been quoted elsewhere.

Cheeky update. Just been to a garage. He scanned for codes on two different vag-com readers and the fault was locked out. He cleared the fault but if it comes back he recommended I take it straight to the lordship to get it scanned. :flushed:
He also checked the clutch and said he reckons it's not that, he had a bit of a drive and played with the biting point with the handbrake on and said the clutch seems fine.
Any other suggestions?
I've got it booked in to go see him on Tuesday, to have a proper look, as I'm off up to Scotland next weekend to Fort William to go watch some mountain bikers throw themselves down big hills, and could do without any car issues on that big old cruise..

So I drove to Llangollen over the weekend to go and watch the BDS, which was good. Only problem is, engine warning light is now back on again. I notice there is still that noise there, and also the revs seem to stick when you go in to neutral and take a few seconds to slowly taper them selves back down to the 900rpm mark.
Anyone have any ideas? Going to try and get it on vag-com later tonight.
