People,

As I am back to the diesel these days after selling the S3 (which just wasn't for me really, sorry S3 owners - diesel all the way) where on earth can I find Shell Diesel Extra?!

I have searched many times for it but to no avail... Can someone confirm that it exisits and that it isn't a myth? I thought it was the diesel equivalent of the Optimax?

Please can people enlighten me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

Huge thanks,
Yans.

you might be thinking of BP Ultimate Diesel? Same principal, but no really favourable reports so far. General consesous is it's not worth the money.

Thanks Eeef, but I am sure I read about shell diesel extra some time ago.. will have to further the search.... also, when I open the fuel cap there is a shell sticker that says 'Shell Diesel Extra'...

..very mysterious!!!

and theres more....

Questions and answers regarding Shell Diesel Extra

Q. What is Shell Diesel Extra?

A. Shell Diesel Extra is a new Diesel fuel with an exclusive formulation, which is designed to help improve your engine’s performance, protect it and enable your vehicle to run more efficiently. The same team of Shell technicians who develop fuels for the Ferrari Formula One cars and have brought Shell Optimax to the UK motorist have created Shell Diesel Extra, which is also exclusive to Shell.

Q: Can I safely mix Shell Diesel Extra with other grades of fuel?

A: Yes. Shell Diesel Extra can be mixed with all other Diesel fuels without causing any damage to your engine. However the full benefits of Shell Diesel Extra will not be achieved if mixed with other Diesel fuels. To achieve the greatest benefit, refuel with Shell Diesel Extra every time.

Q. Can newer Diesel vehicles use Shell Diesel Extra?

A. Yes. The Shell Diesel Extra formulation contains a powerful detergent, which is designed to help clean up and control the harmful fuel system deposits that can build up on the precision fuel injection equipment found in modern diesel cars. The fuel injection equipment found in modern diesel cars can perform poorly if there is a build up of deposits on them. Shell Diesel Extra helps to clean away these deposits, keeping the fuel injection system operating more efficiently and helping to restore the engine’s performance.

Q. Can older Diesel vehicles use Shell Diesel Extra?

A. Yes. Shell Diesel Extra is high in cetane. Cetane is an indication of the fuel’s readiness to ignite. A diesel fuel with a high cetane number can aid combustion in older diesel vehicles, leading to the engine running more smoothly with less noise and reduced emissions.

Q. Can heavy goods vehicles use Shell Diesel Extra?

A. Yes. Shell Diesel Extra’s cleaning properties combined with its high cetane number are designed to be beneficial for the heavy-duty engines found in HGVs. Shell Diesel Extra helps to restore the engine’s performance, reduce white smoke and emissions, and fuel economy benefits may also be realised.

Q: Why does Shell feel the need to market this new fuel now?

A: Shell has conducted extensive research and has found that the diesel motorists are demanding more from their vehicles and the fuel they buy. Shell Diesel Extra has been developed specifically to meet the needs of these customers. There is an increasing number of diesel motorists and they are very important customers for Shell. Shell has recognised this and has now brought the benefits of their fuel expertise to these customers.

Q. How does Shell Diesel Extra work?

A: Shell Diesel Extra is a unique formulation, which works to actively clean up and control harmful fuel system deposits. This can help keep the vehicle's precision fuel injection systems operating more efficiently. The high cetane content of the additive aids more efficient combustion. The combination of these effects can lead to more power, better fuel economy and lower emissions in many vehicles.

Q: What evidence do you have that Shell Diesel Extra is better for a vehicle’s engine?

A: The exclusive formulation used to make Shell Diesel Extra has undergone rigorous engine testing, proving the performance benefits of this diesel fuel. We have extensive test results which show how removing and preventing the build up of deposits in engines, helps maintain designed performance. But you'll only reach its full potential with continued use. Shell Diesel Extra also contains an anti-corrosion additive for further protection.

Q: How quickly will Shell Diesel Extra improve my vehicle’s performance?

A: Shell Diesel Extra starts the process of removing deposits from the engine from the first time you fill. As you use Shell Diesel Extra more, any deposits on the engine’s fuel injectors will be progressively reduced, improving your engine’s performance. Many older technology vehicles should notice the benefits of the improved cetane quality from the first fill.

Q: What is cetane?

A: Cetane is an indication of the fuel’s readiness to ignite. In particular, many older diesel cars perform better when using a diesel fuel that has a high cetane number. This is because it improves the combustion of the diesel fuel, which can result in better starting, less noise, fewer emissions and better fuel economy.

Q: Will Shell Diesel Extra affect my fuel economy?

A: Shell Diesel Extra helps to remove performance-sapping deposits from your engine, which can lead to some fuel consumption benefits.

Q: Are you able to quantify the exact performance/fuel economy/emissions/smoke/noise improvement that will be delivered?

A: We have extensive test results that show that all diesel vehicle technologies (light and heavy duty; old and new) can derive a benefit from Shell Diesel Extra. However, just how much an individual vehicle will benefit depends upon many factors, including age, engine technology, driving style of the driver, how well maintained it is, traffic and road conditions experienced, and so on. In our experience, it is ill advised, and potentially misleading, to make specific quantified claims.

Q: Is the launch of Diesel Extra simply a re-branding exercise of your current diesel?

A: Diesel Extra is absolutely not just a re-branding exercise - our new formulation offers a wide range of additional benefits when compared with Shell Diesel or other regular diesel fuels.

Q: Won’t the lumps of deposit that Shell Diesel Extra removes end up in my engine and damage it?

A. No. Shell Diesel Extra does not chip deposits off the fuel injectors, it dissolves them and washes them into the combustion chamber where they are burned completely along with the fuel.

Q. Is Shell Diesel Extra available at all Shell Service Stations?

A. No. Initially it will only be available at selected service stations – around 60% of our network, in Scotland, the north of England and part of the South East of England. All service stations that stock Shell Diesel Extra will advertise its availability clearly to our customers.

Q: Why is Shell Diesel Extra not available nation-wide?

A: Shell Diesel Extra is a unique fuel requiring specialist logistics equipment to make it available for delivery; and this equipment is not as yet in place nationally. We are, however, planning to extend distribution to remaining parts of the UK as soon as it is possible to do so.

Q: How can I find out which sites will be selling Shell Diesel Extra?

A: You can call our customer service centre on 0800 731 8888 or view the site availability listing on this website.

Q. How much does Shell Diesel Extra cost?

A. Shell Diesel Extra will be priced at the same competitive price as Shell Diesel has been. You don’t pay a higher price at the pump.

Q: Will I still be able to buy Shell Diesel from Shell?

A: Shell Diesel Extra will replace Shell Diesel at the pump in the areas where Shell Diesel Extra is being introduced. Shell Diesel will continue to be available in all other areas.

Eeef, you are truely the man about town!! I knew I wasn't imagining it! Just now to call and find it in an area I pass through! yippeee!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dancing.gif

Good work team.

We've had this stuff in scotland for quite some time.

Can't say I've noticed any difference when using it......

I'm pretty sure I've used this stuff as well. Not by design.Just because I think the office's local station has it.
Like Cheecy says,I can't say I noticed any difference.
Were I,rather than the company, paying for the fuel I would be using Asda/Tesco diesel.

I'd wager a large sum that a 'blind' test on a dyno/track/road would reveal little differences.
In fact, these sorts of tests often end up going the way of the 'lesser' brands !

Mmmmm. I am pretty sceptical about this diesel extra. I can fully appreciate Optimax has got a higher octane rating and I use it in my bike. It just won't run on boggo unleaded. It does make a difference that I can feel and hear.

As I mentioned elsewhere, 100 octane in Europe (Scotland should be in Europe...but...), is a step up again if you have tried it.

As for the diesel.....We need a chemist or a bulls*it free opinion from a refinery worker/oil company to level this one. Suppose you pays yer money.......

Slightly off topic, has anyone else noticed that diesel fuel is now between 5p and 8p a litre more expensive than unleaded. When I bought my tdi in jan 2004, it was only 1p a litre more than unleaded. And then the BP and Shell special diesel is another 3-10p a litre more expensive than regular diesel. is it because there are now more oil burners than ever on the roads?

Extra has a higher cetane rating, so, in theory should do the same as Optimax...

Bio-diesel has a higher cetane rating than both of them (it contains more lovely oxygen for a bigger bang!) but it's damned difficult to find. Have a look at:
http://www.biodieselfillingstations.co.uk/index.htm
http://www.biofuels.fsnet.co.uk/
may also be of interest.
As for the more expensive diesel fuels on the market, being a miserable old cynic I say they're just a way of extracting more money from motorists. All my oil burners have run quite happily on Sainbury's 'gloop'. I haven't yet seen a case to support paying for Optimax or whatever - except of course from the oil companies...

Im quite suprised that there hasnt been anymore uproar with the prices of fuel going up and up again, look what happened last time, i heard rumours tho that theres gonna be a bit of action in the summer (Y summer i dont know) .

But lets face it we all need fuel, for work etc... so y not just boycott a main player like shell, BP or texaco, still get fuel, but someone else can lose out for a change then we might see some thing happen, Your thoughts guys/Gals!!

Don't let the litre price hide the fact we used to work in gallons....5-8p more is 25-40p per gallon more! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif

I assume diesel would need less refining (anyone ?), and as diesels use less fuel the robbing Mr Brown has to get his cash from somewhere to balance the books...

Wasn't this plan going around on e-mail last year. Boycott BP stations and just use shell, so BP reduce their price to tempt people back and so on !

Don't know whether it actually took place though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'd love to be able to boycott the 'big boys' and buy my fuel from the likes of Asda but,as a company car driver,I'm only given Shell or Esso fleet cards.

If anyone knows if the likes of Asda do a fleet card, and it would be worth our while,I'd be willing to put it forward to the MD.

We have 16 diesel vehicles.
If there's a saving,he'd listen !

We may get a 'discount' for having fleet cards already though.I'm not sure.
