I know that in dynamic mode you get an additional augmented engine/exhaust sound. What I wondered was, was this impacted by the sounds system choice you make? i.e. if you have B&O versus, standard sound system, do you think it would affect this sound? Thoughts?

Yes I think so, you can adjust it in the Individual setting on drive select too

I confirm that it works on my manual too, i'm with a B&O soundsystem so can't really help with the original question though... having said that i'd personally would be very surprised if not having B&O made any difference, otherwise it would have said so in all the docs i've read. Nowhere was it stated that it made any difference.

Sounds logical. What do you think of the noise it makes on your setup? Does it sounds natural?

I'm not a fan of it, sounds a bit fake. It comes through the center speaker and you can alter/test the sound if it with VCDS.

I guess you have it set to off then Silky? What do you think of the engine/exhaust sound without it? Still sporty?

I leave it on as most other people in the car like it! It's just I would prefer to hear the engine (old school I suppose!) as it sounds great with the exhaust and Stronic. In VCDS you can turn it off even in dynamic mode.

PS- sound system makes no difference. It's a totally different module not linked to the sound system.

Sadly not, just adjust how loud it is or turn it off.

I thought the exhaust note worked with three different things
    - Speaker (or what is actually called a sound actuator) similar to that used in the SQ5
    - Exhaust flap that changes the noise (I guess this might be why my exhasit pipes are not tarnishing all the same way)
    - Timing of the gear change, to introduce additional sort of "parp", noise on gear change at certain revs (stronic only)

It is actually very noticable, and wind down the window and you will hear it. Still not sure if I a a fan or not. Interestingly if you turn the sound down with the wndow down, you hear a bit more of the turbo which is hard to notice with the sound in full dynamic mode.

I am still playing with the car, and not had nearly enough time to decide what setting I like most.

Heard a gorgeous sounding Maserati tonight. Thought it was an American muscle car until I got closer. It was one of the V8 ones. Sounded really nice. Pretty sure it was the Grand Turismo MC Stradale version.

Its a pity that Audi decided to go the route of a synthetic sound through a speaker. On my car it has a box linked to the induction side of the engine, called a symposer as fitted to a Porsche, then routes the noise using pipes to the cabin. I can assure you it does sound nice especially at full chat. Ford reacts to sound market research - SAE International

The only thing I don't like about my S3 is the fake cabin sound in dynamic, it's awful. So glad it can be turned off. They really got that wrong, surely it could have been a more realistic sound, some turbo noise etc...

I've had my S3 since April 2017 and didn't realise the engine sounds come through the speakers in Dynamic, I tend to use the individual setting with the engine noise on I like the sound, however It has recently started making a really loud sucking noise over the top of the engine noise while accelerating Audi say its normal but its only just started doing it, has anyone else had this problem

You sure it comes through the speakers?
On the Golf GTi/R it is a module that vibrates against the base of the windscreen. If you don't have VCDS you can disconnect under the bonnet ( but I read that it's a right pain to do ! )

Does anyone have a sound clip? I'm not sure my car is working properly. Seem to get the same noise all the time no matter what drive select I'm in. Also got all four tips open all the time no matter what mode I'm in. It's a manual S3 8v

It's not from the speakers like M4, it's the same Soundaktor module as in 7R which vibrate and resonate with the windshield. It could even create drone if you have resonator delete or downpipe. And it's preset at 100% already so you can only turn it down..

For the exhaust flaps, they open at idles and start to close from around 1.2-3K rpm..

If you want to turn off the fake sound you can do it either the hardware- or software-way:

    Hardware - Disconnect the actuator:

Or as Audi calls it "actuator for impact sound": http://www.realoem.me/Audi/RDW/A3/2017/745/R/9/906/906020

Here is what the control unit with plug looks like:
    s-l300.jpg

And in the below video you can see where it is between 0:14-0:30

The guy from the video took this picture to help understanding:
    73d4510857d4bc34a1434a57a76d7638.jpg

Software - Code it out using VCDS or OBD11:

    Kindly borrowed from @DJAlix

A9 - Structure Borne Sound > Adaptation > Volume of structure borne noise actuator = Adjust as needed (0% = off). You could also remove the A9 module from the Gateway installation list.
