    Hey,

I retrofitted my RNS-E a few weeks back and had a few issues getting it up and running but its all sorted now and has been programmed to my car thanks to jb0o, but I'm still having issues with the volume as it seems to have a mind of its own. I can driving or sat static and the volume will start to creep its way up mega high making you adjust the volume a bit which then causes the volume to go very quiet.

Car is a 2012 with Bose fitted.

Has anyone else had anything similar or could anyone offer me any assistance/advice?

    Thanks!

I'd love to know if there is a fix. My 2011 car is the same and it drives me mad but everything I've read suggests there isn't much that can be done about it.

Wife has a 2014 tt with the rns-e and bose and it is perfect, quiet when turned on and never has volume fluctuations

The bose mic needs changing, its a tpi with audi, fixed by swapping out, there are other options, but not ideal solution.

Disabling via coding does nothing, change the mic, return coding to bose setup then test.

One thing I found with my RNSE and the volume fluctuations was that it was worse in the warmer months and fine in the colder months
    Lol.
I found putting the bass down to -3 helped.
And if it started with a mind of its own flick the bass from -3 to -2 then back.
Not an ideal fix but seemed to work better for me

I read a nice little post on another forum whilst searching about, that said disconnect the mic altogether and it faults the system out (3 beeps at boot) but everything else is fine. But it's a good way to test if it's your mic.

I couldn't dare have that low bass :-D my music simply wouldn't be the same hahaha.

Al try disconnecting it and try it as I set a car alarm off this morning when it had one of it's fits!
Then I will get back to you if you still have the mic for sale, but thanks for the part number :)

Is it possible to remove the mic and fit a resistor in it's place to prevent it faulting out?

I haven't yet tried removing the mic to test it yet but just thought id get some info beforehand

Hi m8, if u do a search on here for sporadic volume u will see it was discussed at length.
Only way to stop it if the mic replacement is to rewire the mic on the amp iirc.
My bass was good at -3 but then I'm almost 40 and the concept of hear me miles away lost interest years ago lol

Why would you go to all the trouble for resistors etc when the mic is cheap enough, just swap it out instead of wasting time & money on the other bits that only makes the system inferior.

As the car was fine with the old concert, I thought it may have been because the bass seems slightly stronger on this RNS-E and it's almost as if the mic makes it reverb. So I thought removing it all together would make it better and remove the issue all together.

I had done lots of searching but none with sporadic, but I will take a look now. Don't think requiring at the sub is in my best interests as of yet lol.

Thanks for the help chaps, I will be taking a look at it tomorrow morning before nightshift, so I will let you know the outcomes.

From what I've read, disconnecting the mic will not fix the problem.

right, mic removed and the issue with sound fluctuating is now gone. I don't think the mic is damaged/ broken, i have tested different sounds and basically anything that has loud/ heavy bass or a fast beat causes the sound to peak until the beat or bass stops. at this point it drops off again.

So my thoughts are... to sound deaden the mic some how, sort of insulate it. I agree the mic should stay but i need to make it less responsive. For the time being its staying out to prove it is the issue before i start modifying it. Its nice to know its very easy to get to and if it all goes pear shaped they are not too expensive.

I just don't understand the logic, for the sake of £20-£30 the issue could be resolved with the system operating as intended, but each to there own.

I agree, but how difficult is the wiring to the mic? Where is it located and where does the cable run to?

Its in the head lighting unit, easy to get to & remove old, fit new.

do you really believe the mic is broken? i understand where your coming from but it worked fine with the concert only a few weeks back and now that the RNS-E has stronger bass its causing these issues.

I wouldn't modify any wiring or anything like that, just the actual mic unit. As you can see from the picture i have attached, it has some circuitry on it and the mic is quite small to the bottom left.

My logic is i could spend £20-£30 and the issue might still be present, i know i could simply sell the mic on but why go to all that hassle if i can refit the mic and make it less twitchy?

I will quite happily change it if this is defiantly the issue, I'm just worried that changing won't fix anything.

The mic is located in the interior light dome, its just a simple plug and play jobby that runs back to the bose amp in the rear.

There's an audi TPI for this very issue, I've changed the mic for others & its fixed the issue, the whole point of the system is to adjust the sound automatically, the new mic makes it work properly rather than sporadic.

Go to audi with the TPI & ask them what they will do about it, ask them if you buy the mic & it doesn't fix the issue can you return the item given its a known issue with TPI raised.

Ohh ok i wasn't aware of this, i just thought you were saying it was broken, not that there was an actual issue with it.

Can i just ask, what do you mean by go to Audi with the TPI? is there an actual TPI number or something to relate to?

Thank you for your help by the way, i wasn't undermining your knowledge i was just worried about spending unnecessarily :)

Technical Product Information, this is basically a way audi raises issues with a resolution/fix, we hope lol.

I don't have the tpi to hand, but I'm sure its detailed on a thread on ASN by me, present this to audi & say you're having these issues, what can audi do to help fix the issue given its a known problem.

    No offense taken whatsoever :)

Nope because I never fitted it, it's still brand new in the box.
As I said I bought it from stoke audi but when it arrived the outside temp was a lot cooler and I hardly had any problems with the sound going up and down.
Didn't see the point in fitting it.
I sold the car in June but noticed it was starting to happen now and again as it was getting hotter.
I would have fitted it myself if I'd kept the car

New mic fitted, much better overall although it still has a hic-up or two occasionally at low volume. Overall though much happier! :)
