My passenger door won't unlock/open from outside only opens when I pull the handle from inside?? What is it?

As above, depends on the year, but older cars had a threaded metal rod that pushed into a metal clamp that can sometimes become dislodged over time & newer have the rod no thread with a plastic clamp, but if it isn't unlocking, then could be the door lock itself/microswitches.
