Got the old engine out last night, and what a PITA that was to be fair. I shall be refitting the block without the head, and then fitting the head afterwards.
Managed to break my brake fluid reservoir annoyingly - but it seems to be OK.
Felt sad taking that engine out, it's been in there a long time now and done a really good service! It was one of those 'That'll do pig' moments.
Anyway, whipped off the clutch and flywheel expecting to find all kinds of carnage....
Shockingly, the clutch is actually perfectly fine, and I am sure would have carried on for many many more miles yet - very little wear on it. So - all those disbelievers, you CAN run an OEM clutch with high power and have it last!! Flywheel has got some hot spots on it though...
Head it looking good which is nice - still clean from the last removal!
Block not looking too bad from the outside to be fair - although inside most likely will be a different matter.
In testament to the lack of quality of the metal impeller water pumps - mine has been leaking through the shaft it seems. Quite badly as well.
Plastic water pump for the win....

This post has officially clarified that you drive like an old lady... otherwise you'd have lunched the clutch, wouldn't be able to run linglong sunny wanli tyres and wouldn't be able to keep stock brakes

Getting the engine out isn't so difficult, it's getting it back in while it's swinging about on the hoist

Mating the block back the gearbox is a PITA.
Every metal impellor water pump I have seen has leaked from the shaft... and thats at low miles... most of the broken plastic impellor pumps are original fitment that haven't been changed to the revised versions when the cam belt was changed...
Newer plastic impellor pumps are fine IMO and anyone not changing them when doing the belt is asking for trouble tbh...
In fairness... its launching that kills clutches (ask Dane... ;P)
The std cover/plate setup will start to show its weaknesses mainly due to the torque anyway and the laggier big turbo setups tend to be a little more gentle in this respect even though they can make quite a bit of torque... they don't deliver it in a huge spike like the K04's tend to...

Mine was replaced by a metal one in December, but if i see the next cambelt service I'll bear in mind the newer plastic ones.
Out of interest, do you know which Audi use as a replacement, plastic or metal?
I cant imagine how difficult it'll be alone!
It took 4 of us to get the gearbox mated to the block on mine
I got a plastic one from Jason when I did mine.
The one I removed that had only been fitted a year earlier and 5K miles was also plastic and that was fitted by 4Rings. So i'm guessing they supply plastic now
Audi supply plastic - it's a revised version of the original one. It's not even really plastic - it's more like Bakolite or something.
The metal impellers are heavy by comparison, and I'm sure aren't balanced to be fair, so I am not shocked that they leak.
OK then, so it would appear I have the Tuffty problem.
A non RD epic rod fail.
Wrist pins are poorly, not to mention the rod small ends...

Does look worryingly like a rose. Explain yourself. Pinot is about the lightest you can go, while retaining some credibility.
I had rose once n had the worst headache I've ever had in the morning, never drunk it since.
It was what I had in the fridge - what can I do? I had drunk the Hardy's Crest that was there the night before....
LOL, if my missus saw me taking pistons off of the rods on our dining table, she would kick my ass....
Anyway, so then - the rods and the small ends.
What a bummer.
Seems that splash lubrication over a long duration doesn't really lube the small ends very well. This in turn causes the wear of the small end bushing on the rods and unfortunately the wrist pin.
Worth pointing out here that mine were NOT as bad a Tuffy's - there was a slight ridge on the wrist pin from wear, but on questioning, Tuffty mentioned that his were (and I quote) 'like the Himalayas'.
This is a understandable disappointment - and adds another rather large chunk of cost onto the bill which I wasn't expecting or planning for. Boooo.

Anyway, didn't feel like doing much following this if I'm honest.
Test fitted a few bits and pieces and gave the bores a deglazing, but other than that... now waiting for rings and rods (when I actually buy some).
Also fitted the new CSC to the gearbox.
So now we wait....
CTS Turbo were doing rifle drilled IE rods for $528 shipped to Aus so I imagine they'd be about the same to the UK? Take the gamble on the duty.
I would be willing to port the exhaust ports of your head for free to help with spool?
Now that's an offer I struggle to refuse. How would you want to go about it mate?

Thanks dude - that's cheered me up after a weekend of fail!
Good day today - New piston rings have arrived, I've been and got the gasket I need for the block/oil filter housing and I have also secured a set of 144 x 20 rifle drilled rods which I am hoping will be here by the end of this week with any luck.
Have also ordered a pair of installation pliers off the bay - useful to hang on to in the future me thinks.
its amazing how long they have lasted to be fair.
were you aware of the gamble originally when you chose non-rifle drilled?
i don't think anybody was, back in the dark ages before the 'rifle drilled' debate began publically!
I find it great that tuning the 1.8t is still evolving.
Ive had mine in 5 years, and the shells were as clean as a whistle on my recent rebuild so not all bad...

No mine are lubed up properly....
you dont drive like welly.. guaranteed.. >400bhp and driven uber hard pretty much everywhere.
small ends are the issue.. no shells there, and splash lube is no guarantee of sufficient lube getting to the small end.
rifle drilled ensure oil gets to small end. just like oe.
