I no this question probably been asked a thousand times but what oil is best for 2001 s3 130000 miles
5w30 or 10w5 ?

10w40 is typically semi synthetic... Personally I would use 5w40 fully synthetic...

Some will say that you should use 5w30 longlife oil even when changing on fixed intervals as it's a 'better quality' oil but in reality it is too thin for higher mileage turbo engines especially when hot so the thicker 5w40 changed every 9000 miles or 12months will serve you well

Cheers there's no track days but defo no miss daisy more of a spirited driver

Just bought some quantum platinum 5-40. Cheap and quality.

as tufty says - 5 / 40 fully synthetic - I always use Fuchs titan race - expensive but how much is 5 litres of oil compared to a seized engine ??

I know , so is Fuchs Pro S , Gulf Competition, Millers CFS , Red Line and Motul 300V .

These are the real answer to the question of 'best oil'.

i use Mobil 5W50 and change every 8000 km (thats almost 5000 miles)

And what is a 1.8 20V Turbo biggest ememy ?

Could someone tell me whether viscosity @ 100°C 13 and 12 mm2/s is negligible or a big difference ?

If tuffty is referring to 505.01 5W40 , but best 5w40's are expensive esters.

There has been a difference of opinion between 5W40 505.01 and 5W30 504.00/507.00 LongLife for some time.

The opinions were just that without any scientific analysis.

What gives an oils quality is base stock group and additive package which can be up to 30% of its volume.

A lower quality thicker oil can have the same or less viscosity of a higher quality oil at the HTHS ( High Temperture High Shear) Viscosity test conducted at 150°C.

5W40 505.01 is base stock group 3 whereas 5W30 504.00/507.00 is 3 , 4 and 5 , 5's being esters which is the best quality oil base stock available to man.

504.00/ 507.00 also has a higher overall percentage additive package of 15 to >20.0 M% to 505.01 5W40 12.0 to 15.0 M%

This enables it to match 505.01's 150°C HTHS- Viscosity and out perform it , mostly in fuel economy but I would also expect this means small improvement in power and torque .

2nd biggest improvement is Sludge prevention a 1.8 20V Turbos biggest enemy.

Improvements to prevention of wear, piston deposits and better after-treatment compatability .

10w40 decent quality and be done with it.
change it regularly and enjoy.

dont go too thin an oil, on an older engine

I use 10w60 fuchs titan supersyn here in Dubai.

Not surprised. Great oil Fuchs.

What's daytime ambient temps like?

Its "winter" at the moment, early mornings are around 12-15c, day temps around 25-30c. Summer is 30-35c in the morning and 45-48c during the day :)

Best oil recommended for the 3.2 V6? Mine's due a change this week, never tried Ester before

Ask on R32OC you splitter LOL...

In all seriousness.... I am looking at using the Millers Nanodrive 10w50 for the next oil change which is triple ester... if I hade an R32 turbo engine in my S3 I would probably still use this in it :)
