We have a 2001 100bhp TDI A3.
It's doing around 47 mpg on runs lately. I reckon it should be doing alot more.

What are the first things to check? I have vagcom if there's anything worth checking using that?
I've changed the thermostat and temp sensor. No better.

Cheers in advance.

Check for boost leaks with VAG COM to look for 'Requested boost and actual boost' figures.

if requested boost is high and actual boost is low, you know you've got a leak somewhere! it'll also probably be smoking quite a lot.

disconnect maf sensor and see how it drives. if its the same, then its most likely shot. exchange unit from audi costs around £70.

what sort of run are you doing? how many miles?...motorway or town?

Country side runs, about 15 miles aday, relatively easy runs, 80% of the drive is on a main road, ussual just in 5th rolling along.
I was looking at the car today, whilst idling I disconnected the maf. The revs didn't change at all.

Took it for a drive without the maf, and it was totally gutless.

Seems good to me, I get 37mpg around town, 45mpg on the motorway.

Sorry gents, I must be a gentle driver lol.
I recently did a 300 mile journey to invergarry in scotland. Got there, filled up 44.8mpg worked out at the pump. I was rather happy with that.

The A3 should be doing more.

Do these tell you anything? I'm not sure if that's normal
