Hey guys, I've been offered a deal on a new RS4. I've been offered a discount better than I expected(cancelled order) but the downside is the trade in value they've given for me car is pretty poor, £16800. They're 'confident' that what they've offered is above book price and I tend to disagree.

    A3 2.0 TDi Quattro Sport S-Line
    2006 model
    55 plate, registered September 2005
    Brilliant Black
    Owner from new
    3600+ miles only
    Full Votex/Audi Body Kit
    Chrome Exhaust tips
    BOSE
    Parking Sensors
    Cruise Control
    Centre Armrest
Rest of the spec is as S-Line

Bought for £23600 in summer 2005 with a 6% discount. According to the AA 'value my car' service which is apparently powered by glasses I get a £17800 valuation on a excellent condition base spec model with 10k miles.

I even had the dealer go through this service and he said "ah, but it says it's powered by CAP auction prices, not glasses".... at best I hoped for £18k trade in given the low mileage, at worst £17000. Someone who works at glasses even gave me a valuation of £17700

What do you think? how can their valuation be some much lower? and what you would do in the position I'm in?

I don't want the hassle of selling privately but might do if it'd be worth an extra £1k.

Push em hard. Have you tried the "I'll sign for it now if you give me £1000 extra trade in" routine? I expect you have.....

Not tried hard yet mate! I wanted to go away and be 100% sure the value they've offered is way below book. Once I know that then I can try harder.

Glasses, Cap are guides, however I have always found the best guide price is to find an equivalent model locally at a main dealer then take £3K off the price for the trade in value.

As for your situation look at the total cost of change, ie the new car price less the trade in, is this a good deal??? What will another dealer offer you for the same change, if its not a cancelled order?

Just paid for a glasses guide valuation from glasses themselves. £17600 excellent condition! I have a nice print out to show the dealer.

Secondly, I've hunted through the used car locator and picked out cars of the same plate and spec(55 plate). They aren't many Quattro S-Lines on there but the ones that are:

    Jan 2006 TDi Quattro S-Line, 13721 miles £19495
    http://usedcars.audi.co.uk/carview.aspx?id=501443587

    Feb 2006 TDi Quattro S-Line, 14418 miles £20995
    http://usedcars.audi.co.uk/carview.aspx?id=501446446

    Jan 2006 Tdi Quattro S-Line, 10083 miles £20950
    http://usedcars.audi.co.uk/carview.aspx?id=501460579

I also looked at DSG S-lines given Quattro and DSG are the same price:

    Sep 2005 TDi DSG S-Line 22048 miles £19495
    http://usedcars.audi.co.uk/carview.aspx?id=501440027

    Nov 2005 TDi DSG S-Line 17800 miles £20900
    http://usedcars.audi.co.uk/carview.aspx?id=501398071

    Feb 2006 TDi DSG S-line 8000 miles £20995
    http://usedcars.audi.co.uk/carview.aspx?id=501327498

Dealer told me he'd put me car up at £18k-something. Course he will ^^^^^^^^)

At least now I have some solid info to bargain with.

I think the offer is very reasonable really; 8P prices have been sliding a little recently I think. But regardless of that, if you're in a position to buy an RS4 - at around £50k new I'd guess with a few options and a discount - then surely a couple of hundred extra on your trade-in isn't going to make a huge amount of difference??? If you can get a good deal on an RS4, I'd just go for it! :)

I know it's not that bad, but it's not great.

If they don't budge, what else should I haggle for? discount on tracker? free GAP? :)

As you say, it`s a guide price. Unfortunately, Glasses don`t actually buy cars, dealers do. It sounds like a reasonable price to me considering the discount available on the RS4.

I want a new car now, M3 is likely to have a long waiting list. Plus it's not like the RS4 is a bad car.

It all comes down to the price to change. If you want the RS4, do you have to px your car to get the discount? How big is the discount and what is the spec of the RS4, plus is it an Avant or Saloon.

As someone else has mentioned, if your worried about a grand here and there when buying an RS4, then is it for you.

Your trade in price doesnt look too bad. I'd spend my time looking at what your buying instead.

Are you getting a good deal?
How long would you keep the RS4?
How much are you prepared to lose?

Looking at Autotrader they have 7 pages of RS4's for sale, which for a specialist/niche car is a lot.
The car is unlimited, unlike the previous RS4.
Its a gas guzzler - Mr Brown will hate it
The car buying public is fickle and as the new M3 comes out, RS4 values will be hit further

Looking at prices, my guess is that an RS4 saloon is that at 2 years it will be worth £35-37k.

The RS4 is a fine car but with the eminent arrival of the new M3 will become obsolete... Market wise it will always will be easier to sell a M3 than a RS4.

    Both good cars though...

What a load of tosh, what are you basing your statement on exactly? When has a saloon RS4 and M3 been in the market place at the same time before... so how can you know?

OK, the dealer will not budge on the 16800, but they've said they will offer me 17600 for mine if they register the new car first. Meaning I will be the second owner.

The discount on the RS4 is a decent one, I've never heard anyone get a better discount. I have 3 options:

    1. Take 16800
    2. Take 17600 and be the second owner
    3. Sell mine private, put a cash deposit on the RS4. Complete when mine is sold.

Think option 3 is going to be the best. Anyone wanna buy my car? ;-)

    ey? thats really gay.....
theyre offering you £800 extra just to say it was theirs for a day first? what does that do at all? other than make it look like its had more owners than it has :S

i REALLY dont understand that one !!!

will they still offer you the same discount on the RS4 if you dont PX your A3?

I don't really understand it either TBH. He said the car needs to go by the end of the finacial year(end of march) and by them registering it it frees up capital in the car which they will pass on to me.

I've already told them I'm not interested, given I'd lose more than £800 on the other end for being the second owner.

And yes, the discount does still stand if I don't PX. The problem is I know they will register the car to themselves if they don't have the cash in their bank for the end of the financial year.

Highly unlikely I'll sell it by then.

If the PX was higher could you complete the deal and have the car registered this month. If you can make that clear to them, and wait :) You never know you might get a phone call ;)

How much discount are they offering?

My guess is they want low inventory levels for end of year. Plus 31st March is end of 1st qtr and might affect manfacturers bonus

I've done a deal. Not doing a PX. I'm going to sell private, once that's done I can collect my car which will have been paid for by the end of march.

Putting my car up at £18495 for a quick sale. That's up to £2500 cheaper than the cars with the same spec/same plate/higher mileage from Audi used locator.

    What colour/options are on it?

Spec was almost just what I would have ordered myself:

    Sprint Blue Saloon
    RS4 Bucket Seats, Black leather
    Carbon Interior
    DVD Sat Nav
    Adaptive Lights
    Cool Box
    Auto Boot Lid
    Auto Dimming Light & Rain
    iPod
    Tracker Horizon

List is over £54k inc the tracker, I got it for under £50k. There are still lots of used cars being sold via classifieds that are way above the 50k mark so I reckon I've done pretty well to get a new one with a decent discount. I was on the lookout for a used one at around the 45k mark(which they're aren't many of) or a deal on a new one.

Not so much worried about the economy, more so the insurance!

Great spec and Sprint Blue looks the nuts.

That is a really good price as I've been keeping an eye on the used RS4 prices recently too, hoping they'll drop enough for me to consider one! Like you say some are around the 50k mark even with 5-8k miles on them.

The growl of that V8, the awesome performance and handling, quite a machine!

    I'll get one someday :blownose:
    .
    .
    .
    but until then enjoy yours!

Nice one, stunning car in that colour.

Looked at one in the dealer some months ago, ex demo was offered a test drive, declined on the grounds I would have bought it had I driven it.

True, the car was ordered before the offer.

I wonder how many people times they fail to mention the offer to customers? it's not on the audi website.

My car now for sale. Cleaned it today and took some pics, the sun came out as well.

I think I'm asking for a decent price. I looked at the trade in price(s) and the prices of cars in auto trader and in the locator and priced mine in between the two.
