I hope you guy's can help, i have very nearly bought an A4 Tdi Sport but it needs new Discs and Pads on front and rear in about 7000miles. I have managed to knock the dealer down on price but he is servicing the car (AVS) and replacing all belts, water pump and timing belt.

The car was up for £8495 with 76k on the clock. I have managed to knock him down to £8000 but i have to pay for 4 new tyres, road tax also the brakes will need doing in 7000 miles or so.

Please please please help me and let me know if you think that the dealer is trying to pull a crafty one or not.

It's a 2004 A4 TDI Sport 130 (6sp), S-Line kit and GMBH body kit. Full service record, Half Leather/Alacantra interior, Interior light Pack, Storage Pack, Chrome finish inside. Does that help?

Sorry i should have put that on the origional post

By "GMBH" I assume you mean the "Quattro GmbH" body kit (aka S-Line bodykit): all late-model Sports should have this. If it has S-Line badges, then those are retro-fitted, not a problem, but they are NOT adding any value... if he says it is a genuine S-Line, then check the door-sills: they should have deeply embossed silver and red S-Line badges: a stupidly expensive retro-fit (>£500 + spraying and fitting), so very seldom done... but the badges are only £34.

A late model sport should look pretty much the same as mine, except somebody has fitted two little S-Line badges to mine :) and some S4 wheels :rockwoot:

Here's a 1.9TDI Sport on Parkers... LINK but note that is NOT the picture of a late model sport....

Audi A4 Saloon (00-04)
1.9 TDI Sport (130ps) 4d (6speed)
2004/04
Average mileage: 50,000 miles

Franchised Dealer £8,755
Independent Dealer £8,510
Private Good £8,105
Private Poor £6,605
Part Exchange £6,890
It's a fair bit above avg mileage (50% over) and he's only asking a fraction less than avg dealer prices, options list is okay, but nothing to write home about... at least you're got the cam belt, etc done... I'd rather get it that way around and then get to choose my own tyres than have him fit whatever he can get cheapest... not sure what the mileage advjustment on that ought to be though.

It has not got the embossed S Line inside the doors so these must have been fitted by previous owners. It is the GMBH (S-Line) kit that is fitted, looks quite similar to yours.

I have had a Audi specialist look at it today and the only points that came up were the ones that were mentioned. He gave me a quote of around £460 for disc's front and back and pad's front and back. Does this sound quite reasonable? Another mechanic told me that the current disc's which do have a slight lip should last around 7000 miles. I shouldn't be put off due to the brakes needing doing should i?

You can see the car on autotekcars . co . uk, let me know what you think.

I really appreciate the help LOSTBOK. Your Audi looks great!

Hi, that garage is very local to me and they always seem to have decent straight cars, i would say for the price on the brakes that would depend on wheather you want to use genuine or patterned, if you want a second opinion i will gladlly put you on to a local independent garage who i can recommend, the owner has a a4 b7 and they look after my b6 avant,

Overall the car looks good, remember discs and pads are just serviceable items so don't let this put you off!!

Just to confirm - The only B6 that was actually referred to as S Line was the late 1.8T S Line in June 04 iirc. This is the only model that will have the interior S Line logos i.e. steering wheel and door sills. Hope that helps.

Don't worry about the brakes mate...how on earth can they say 7k miles?? They may only last you 6k but my money is on a whole lot more! They don't know how/where you drive so is a complete shot in the dark!

So do you guy's think it's quite a bargain?? I had a quote from an Audi specialist who quoted around £460 fro new disc's and pad's all round.

Are you guy's on the AVS service or just every year?

The other thing i couldn't work out was how you got up the average MPG on the computer on the dash. There was no toggle on the right hand stalk to change the settings. Any idea's?

You dont have the full active DIS then if you have no switch....join the club! Why the hell did Audi do that anyway, wouldnt hurt to put a full DIS in whilst they built the damn cars..

o i see, all it has is where you can set a warning to go off when you go over a certain speed. Shame they never stated that in the manual!! I spent age's trying to work out how to get the ****** thing up ha ha

J7USS what do you tihnk about the brake dilema i'm in?

With all that i would have to pay out it would work out that i would have paid a total of £8940 forthe car

you can get the front and rear pads & discs from GSF Car Parts for approx half of what the stealership is charging. the fronts are a piece of **** to change and fit, i know, i managed to do it! but the stumbling block will be the rears as you need a special tool to wind the pistons on the calipers in to change the pads, maybe just get a specialist independent to do the rears for you

Lostbok, just so you know theres no spraying involved in fitting the B6 S-Line sill protectors, you just grab a hairdryer/heat gun and warm up the glue that holds the old sill protectors in place and then just pull them up and off, to fit the S-line sill protectors it is a case of locating them in the correct position using the tabs on the underside and sticking them in position using the double sided tape that is supplied in the kit....et voila!

haha its easily done. So all you can see is miles remaining on the DIS then?

Its like Tech says you can get the parts pretty cheap, if you know someone who can fit brakes then sling them a drink but they are quite easy to fit yourself even with a Haynes manual. You can buy a tool for the rear but I have heard some people using there own devices to wind the pistons in.

If I remember rightly, I paid £224 for Disc/pads all round on the red one and I fitted the fronts and got my cousin to do the rears. Audi will price you on Genuine stuff so will be more cost but go patterned, its cheaper and no difference in my opinion.
GSF car parts (as Tech as stated) are cheap for bits like this and you'll prob get the whole set for around £200ish.
...BUT like Markyzs has said how can they say 7k left on them.
have a look at the Pads and discs and if they aint that bad then leave it for few months (depending on how much driving you do) and get them sorted later on down the line. So hasnt your Brake wear Indicator not come up on your DIS???

Thanks 1210tech and J7USS really appreciate your help. I've been beating myself up for about 3 weeks over this car on whehter or not to make the dive into my first Audi!

It's good to know that i am able to get the partsa hell of alot cheaper and i'm sure i could get someone to fit them as i'm not sure i would be brave enough to fit them myself (although may ask the brother inlaw if he fancy's having a go! ha ha)

I've managed to get a price for tyres at £76 each fitted.

J7USS yeah all i can see in the DIS is the miles left in the tank. Also no brake warning light came up whilst i had it and the brakes seem to work fine. When the guy looked over it he said that someone had put new pads on the front but the disc's do have a slight lip on, maybe a 2mm lip maybe more.

Problem or d you think it would be ok for a while?

In all honesty mate it doesn't sound like the dealer knows what he's talking about! No one can predict brakes will last for '7000 miles'! Sounds like he is trying to claw back some of the money you knocked him down on .....

If you're happy with the4 car I would just get it and not worry about the brakes, then you can get them checked out in your own time.

yeah i know what you mean quattrojames and when i sat down with him to talk about figures his face dropped a bit when i said i wanted him to do as fresh AVS service on it as it's not due for another 7000miles but i wanted to start a fresh with as much done as possible, that was also when i knocked another £250 off the price.

The Audi specialist i saw said that they could do with doing but never said whether they needed doing right away or not, think i might give him a call tomorrow and double check with him.

a 2mm lip on the disc is not a biggy, you should've seen the state of the front discs on mine when i changed them! :)

the only thing the lip will cause is uneven wear on the pads but if you want to change the fronts immediately you are looking at approx £150 (probably less, i think mine were £120 and mine is a bigger engine with bigger discs) for the front discs & pads and rope your cousin in to help with the promise of a slab of lager for his troubles :)

just had a quick look on the GSF website and I think the discs for yours are vented 288mm which are £23.50 each plus vat p/n: 60215.... BUT make sure you double check because the listings are quite confusing!!! not sure on the pads, they have loads listed!

thanks 1210james, i did have a look on there and couldn't figure it out ha ha but they are only in Farnham so i'm going to go over at the weekend and get a full price for everything. Where did you get yours from?

I really do appreciate all your help guy's and you have really settled my mind. Tonight i had decided not to go for the car because of the brakes but you have just proved to me that hwats on there is not as bad as i thought and nor is getting cheaper parts as difficult as i thought.

Do you guy's have any meets in or near Surrey at all? I'm just outside of Guildford

what size tyres you priced for £76, what make i need two for the rear of mine!!

Hi,also give tps a ring they are on slyfield ind est Guildford good prices, genuine parts

I think TPS is where the garage is getting the Cambelt, Waterpump and AVS service done. A friend of mine has a part share in a tyre place in Cranleigh called TLC. 01483 277055, when i spoke to him he told me that thay can undercut all major company's so it's well worth a go i also had a website given to me where the prices arn't too bad either blackcircles.com
