so i was driving along the road and the oil light came on. ok so i drove back to my house and opened the bonnet to dip it for oil.

it read that i was completely dry and as my car was heated up i opened the oil cap and obviously there was a bit of smoke from it. i put 2L into it and when i turned my car on again the light flashed up again although when i dipped it again it read that it was at good level?

do i have to like reset the warning thing or what have you?
:readit:

mitch78... yeah i know, i was really stupid it wasnt quite 2L but close to it none the less. i dipped it and its reading just a little over max so im thinking will it burn it off anyway or while im this far get new oil and filter and do a change?

its a 2.0L TDI SE audi A3 so what would the best oil be for it ?

thanks

Think the best thing is to let the car cool right down so the oil settles, do a full drain and change, including filter as well....

As mentioned above, an overfill is just as bad as underfilling/running out.

Hope you get it sorted.

Oh and you dont need to reset the light or anything, as soon as it senses enough oil the light will go out on its own.

I always do my oil changes hot / warm its the way the old man taught me when I was a lad.

But I always check oil levels cold

Yeah I dipped it before and after! Basically what's happening now is
that I've done the full oil change but the warning light won't go off.
The light that appears is a yellow oil jar dripping with a water icon below
I'm taking it to a machanic tomorrow to see if he knows anything.
