I understand the rear speakers are powered by a little amp. I wondered if it's possible to replace the rear speakers with aftermarket ones and have them powered off this amp?

Not really as the amp is part of the rear left speaker. I suppose you could hide the chassis of the speaker somewhere and still use it to power the rears, but it's so puny you will really not get any benefit from upgrading the speakers at all. Better to by a small amp and use that to power them (something like an old Alpine 3501, which is very small and could use the existing Audi power cable), or if you have an aftermarket HU then just rewire them to the HU.

Thanks mate. I'm now looking at splicing into the existing amp wiring to connect a seperate amp to power a sub. Is it possible to do this but still power the rear speakers from the existing amp or could I then power the rear speakers from the new amp?
Any help greatly appreciated. I've been looking at this post for amp/sub install to the stock HU.
