Hi

Can anyone give me a rough idea of the likely cost for replacing my clutch cable? (think '97 A3, local non-specialist garage)

It sounds very trivial but I'm panicking a bit... I start a new job next month and have an exceptionally tight budget between now and the first pay day... I really didn't think I'd have to have the car fixed.

The clutch pedal has gone completely 'limp' and falls right down to the mat. I found on the mat afterwards a small plastic clip sort of 'V' shaped which had clearly broken, I'm guessing that this clip bound the pedal to something.

On the assumption that it was a simple cable job I planned to take the car to a garage just up the road (i.e. short distance could be driven in low gears without the clutch). If it's more complicated than that then I'd prefer to take it to a specialist or dealer... again can anybody give me an indication of the size of the job?

I've garaged the car until pay day, I've got a run-around to use until then.

Andy thanks, from your diagram it's clear that part no. 12 is broken and fell down onto the floor mat.

I spoke to a mechanic this evening who said he had to fix an identical problem recently with a Golf GTI, and that the whole pedal needed replacing... seems a bit far fetched for the sake of a bit of plastic.

apparently its the truth the same thing happened to my mate on his 99 a3 turbo this week and he had to purchase a new pedal as well. cost him £90 supply and fit
