First of all i'm struggling to get the head unit out, but also i've been told i need a special wiring loom to run the standard speakers in my s3, does anyone know if this is true?

if you have a bose system you will need autoleads part no. PC9-410 this converts the wiring to RCAs which you put into your alpine, its around £45 but you can get it on ebay for £20 if i remember correct. don't get cheap copy leads that only have 2 RCAs you need the lead with 4 front and rear independant. also there is a remote lead to turn the amp on/off, my alpine went in no problem don't forget you need special audi removal keys to get your old unit out. if you haven't got these pop down to audi and they should be able to pop it out for you.
because the Audi systems are all amped you may find that you get a popping when turning the unit off but some cars do it some don't my a4 with bose didn't but my S3 does same headunit same wiring its just strange.

hope that helps ya!

My Sony makes a horrible buzzing noise, which really needs sorting. I think it needs earthing but I have'nt got around to doing it yet, so bear this in mind when changing the head unit.

was told mine was a bad earth by and I.C.E specialist but it something to with the remote lead to the amp check the B5 A/S4 forum as there is a big post on there about it.

Hi,

I would suggest taking it to Audi to pop the stereo, its a bitch!
Just changed mine in my 1.8T and its a mare really.
Make sure you have the correct facia adaptor too as there are 2 types out there, one that is a 2 pc kit, the other a complete front.
I bought the wrong facia type and made a mess of the dash trying to fit it!

Going to get an AndyMac insatll later in the year.

Dave.

Good point. The fascia I had to use from Autoleads was for a Seat Toledo! I will be checking the remote lead. Thanks for the tip

You'll definately need an adapter to get either Bose or non-Bose system working as both have a seperate amp with a non standard connector. The Bose system amp runs all the speakers with a 2nd amp running the sub. The non Bose system amp just runs the rears and the sub.
There are 2 types of adapter. Either RCA input (takes RCA's from the Alpine and feeds them to the amp). Or speaker input which uses the speaker output from the alpine and uses a hi-lo converter to take it back down to pre-out level to feed the Audi amp. The RCA input is far better from an SQ point of view, but you can get popping from the amp when changing CD tracks. This depends on the HU and seems to only effect HU's with 4v+ RCA's.
The speaker input is crap for SQ and prone to buzzing, but won't suffer from the popping.
On the non Bose system it's far better to rewire the rears directly to the HU and bypass the Audi amp. Then use the RCA input adapter connected to the Alpines RCA sub out, purely to feed the sub. Or even better replace the tupperware sub, as it's the weakest part of the A3/S3 system.

where can i find out what voltage my preouts are?
and in an S3 do the speaker grills have BOSE written on them like an A/S4 if its a full bose system??
i've fitted my alpine no problem as i had the keys from my A4 that was full bose and popped to start then went away? figure that!
thanks
