I know rhis may sound stupid but what size allen wrench do you use for the bolts on the diverter valve? I thought it was 5 but doesnt seem to fit right

The reason that it does not fit correctly is that it is not an Allen bolt. You need a set of torx bits. If you look carefully you will see the indentation in the top of the bolt is like a star, not a hexagon for an Allen key.
