My A3 is a few months old and I find the gear box a bit notchy and not smooth at all. Does anyone else have this issue?

Doesn't sound right. Mine is s-tronic but I test drove a couple of manuals and they were beautifully smooth gearboxes.

If you came from 8P (or any 2002-2014 Audi) you might notice that, I did as well. My old 8P gearbox was nicer than 8V.

You can actually here it when changing

I owned a 1.4 saloon with a manual gearbox and found the gear changes to be quite good and never notchy. But then surely you do need to feel the gears being selected, after all audi's can be pretty numb to drive at the best of times..

I found the 8P gear change hard work when new and it took several thousand miles to run in and settle down but then was superbly smooth and still is at 85 k.

The 8V 1.4 COD gear change has been perhaps slightly smoother when new compared to the 8P but still waiting for it to get better at 12 k although I don't think it will. I don't hear the gears as you describe, but do have to take care when changing.
